  • September 2024. Serbia (Србија). A friend I know from the wild Turkmenistan years visited me for her birthday, and I, being the consummate host, showed her around Vršac (Вршац) during the Grožđebal grape harvest festival and a splash of Belgrade (Београд), focus on Avala Mountain.
She was excited to discover that probably around three of every ten people in Belgrade were speaking her mother-tongue: Russian.

Not too many tourists visit the Avala mountain in Belgrade. The statues which are part of the Monument symbolize women from various parts of the then Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

It was Roman before the Slav Serbs came and squatted permanently there. Same with Bulgarians, they stole their entire country from the Greeks 😂. Maybe that Austrian painter was right about the Slavs

@@LionelLando The Romans killed the Thracians and Illyrians who lived there before the Roman conquest and the South Slavs are descendants of the survivors of the Thracian, Celtic and Illyrians from before the Roman conquest. Most South Slavs have a different Haplogroup then the other Slavs.

@@LionelLando The Greeks weren't the only people living there in ancient times. Bulgaria was Thracian in those times. The Greeks were destroyed by civil wars and then wars with the Romans, which they lost. Many Greeks had left and colonized other lands. The Byzantines found that "Slavs" were already living settled in the Peloponnese (Southern Greece) and in large numbers when they started taking it over. There was no mention of a Slavic migration to the Peloponnese in historical sources so those people had likely lived there or around that area for a long time. Ancient Greece was city-states and there were a lot of non-Greeks all around. The Byzantines started mass deportations of "Slavs" from the Peloponnese, Macedonia and Thrace and sent them mostly to Anatolia (modern day Turkey) and then they imported peoples from the Caucasus (such as Armenians), the Middle East (Syrians) and Greek-speakers from Italy to "re-Hellenize" the area. This was part of their "Themes". It worked in "Greece" but the "Slavs" were too numerous in other areas.
Bulgars were a Turkic people who settled among the South Slavs and eventually became completely Slavicized. They didn't speak a Slavic language when they first arrived. The process of losing their language and speaking a Slavic language took around 200 years according to linguists. The first Bulgarian Empire was called Khanate which is a Turkish word for Lordship.
