This is the well-known theme song of the classic 1960s program during its second American run. Made in England and known there as "Danger Man", it was titled "Destination Danger" or "John Drake" in non-United Kingdom markets. In the United States, CBS aired some of the original series of episodes as "Danger Man" in 1961 while the same network broadcast the subsequent two series of episodes as "Secret Agent" in 1965 and 1966. Starring Patrick McGoohan, it was a more realistic depiction of the life of an espionage operative than the James Bond films. John Drake, the central character, is complex and upright. He follows a strict moral code. Drake didn't look to seduce and abandon women as he saw them as more than just mere objects of sexual desire. Women were attracted to the debonair secret agent but John Drake believed his line of work prevented him from having any serious romantic relationships. Furthermore, Drake preferred to overcome his adversaries by employing his intelligence, charm, guile, and quick thinking rather than force even though on occasion he got roughed up. John Drake resorted to the use of weaponry when all else failed. His code of morality extended to his foes as well. Drake did not care to needlessly inflict physical harm or even to kill. A master of disguise and a skillful deceiver, John Drake would assume whatever identities would ensure the successful completion of his different missions. I consider the program to be a timeless representation of Cold War paranoia and intrigue. Along with "The Prisoner" (another fine 1967 British-produced series shown in the United States in 1968 and felt by many critics, and correctly so in my opinion, to be a sequel to "Danger Man"/"Secret Agent"), it is a landmark of Sixties television. The American-born McGoohan stars as a former spy known only as Number Six. There are those, myself included, who see Number Six as being John Drake. The prolific and versatile actor was also a co-creator of this series in collaboration with George Markstein. In addition, he was the sole executive producer of "The Prisoner". Patrick McGoohan wrote and directed several episodes (at times under various pseudonyms). "The Prisoner", in common with "Secret Agent", is one of my favorite television programs.
