Sherri's family always believed it was Lazarus who had killed their daughter. They told investigating police first thing when asked if they knew of anyone who might want to hurt Sherri that Lazarus had threatened her, that their daughter was afraid of her and that they believed she was the most likely culprit. The cops covered everything up and went with the "two random black guys that no one ever saw".
Also Sherri's husband was a faithless creep who was totally unworthy of her. The worst thing that ever happened to that woman was meeting that cheat and liar.
She should NOT have been able to RETIRE from the Police Department! She should have been FIRED!!

I did a Google search on Sherri and she was a remarkable woman. Graduated a tough nursing course when she was still a teenager and developed critical care nursing protocols that are still in use to this day. The sky's the limit on what she could have become if she'd lived.
Noticed that, she was a sharp young lady with so much going for her, talented, a good heart and beautiful.
Indeed ... definitely a huge loss to this world.

I read the book regarding this homicide twice. I do not believe john was completely clueless after the homicide that stephanie could not be involved. Her behavior before the homicide would lead ANYONE to be suspicious as her family did. I continue to be appalled by the LAPD coverup and/incompetence but am grateful to the detectives who stepped up to finally afford Sherry justice.

@@qiuwbr091 I can't see a relation between what you're saying here and this case. She attacked the woman at the hospital that she worked at and threatened her life during this incident. Other police had to escort her from the incident. It's pretty clear that there is a connection to the crime and only her being part of the investigating police department kept her from being arrested during the initial investigation. DNA matching only her among 5 possible perpetrators is extremely strong evidence. You're saying here that your experience indicates that a gang member did this and pinned it on her, am I right?
After the murder, when Sherri's family raised the possibility of Lazarus as the killer, the police told them, "This isn't TV."
LA police have always had a terrible reputation. Corrupt from head to toe. Endless stories on this department. Corrupt, violent thugs.

Their initial so called investigation of Sherri's murder was a pathetic, sick joke but was probably the gold standard for LAPD back in the day. To give credit where credit is due, though, the Department bit the bullet and the Criminal Investigations unit started to seriously rework some of the cold cases and voila!
Fortunately, for the world at large, Stephanie was not a serial killer and during the time she was at large working for LAPD, she pretty much kept her nose clean......

I watched the full interrogation & her eyes are as scary as hell. And John’s continued involvement with this unhinged lunatic contributed to his wife’s death. Which is why John said knowing she was murdered brings him to his knees. That poor girl died because he partner was a cheat and because he was cheating with a psycho.
He definitely wasn’t worth dying over. So sad his beautiful fiancé didn’t split when he insisted to just “ignore” a clearly devastated and unwell paramour.
My point is John maybe was completely afraid of the psycho look Stephanie has, he didn't know how to end the relationship. But he should have acknowledged that he was afraid of her during the trial. Maybe he did not out of pure shame; he didn't want to look like a weak man.

It was pretty entertaining! True Crime Loser does a couple great videos on it. The Dahlia Dippolito, Stephen McDaniels, and Russell Williams interrogations are also super entertaining if you guys want more.
She was a sociopath, pure and simple. And John was playing each of those women against each other like some vicious game and was no better than Stephanie at this point. Revolting.

I'm not convinced of that. John's anguish at having been a causal factor in Sherri's murder seemed genuine to me (see footage of his statement at trial). He didn't just say it was a mistake but clearly felt genuine remorse even a quarter century later. I think it does say something about the casual attitude many men take toward sex, even while married or engaged. The breach of trust is real and can have devastating consequences. If someone wants to be polyamorous, the absolute minimum to be ethical about it is to have the informed consent of all parties. But I'm convinced he knows that now and regrets it. Stephanie was clearly manipulating him, so I can understand that he fell for this briefly after the murder. John was convinced that she couldn't and wouldn't have done it. So another mistake of his was excessive trust of police just for being police. She was police, so he thought she couldn't have done it, and the investigating officers backed that up by ruling her out despite the evidence.

I leaned toward BPD myself, though I'm grateful that Dr. Grande pointed out that there's not enough info to confirm a pattern. My reason for leaning that way is just her histrionics in general -- not just about losing partners, and committing such a senseless murder, but also how she reacted during the interrogation. "This is insane!" over and over. It just reminded me of BPD people I've encountered. Sociopaths I've seen in interrogations seem to be able to stay much calmer and calculated. I could be mistaken about both, of course. I'm not a psychologist.
In my opinion, John is also responsible for Sherri's death. He had to have known who killed her.

Travis Alexander would definitely be living had he not thrown his life away by sleeping with crazy Jodi Arias when he knew she was crazy. Bottom line is don’t f-ck with crazy people.

Im not sure also if they mentioned that John was cheating with Lazarus so maybe that's why she was literally the last suspect

She had a lot going for her, but she had this crazy side she managed to keep under wraps most of the time. I come from a LE family and a lot of cops are adrenaline junkies, especially the young ones. Don't know why that wouldn't include the women too.
From a guy's perspective, she was probably a mighty exciting lay and John thought if he acted like this was just a FWB thing then she'd get on the same page too, even after she was obviously stalking his girlfriend. Men and women are different that way.
He was in denial about the potential danger he was putting Sherri in, probably didn't think a woman would ever get violent like that.

Then, after his coworkers covered up her murder, he visited Stephanie in Hawaii. The fact that he could work with his fiancés murderer, as well as the corrupt cops who refused to investigate her, says a lot about his character. He’s obviously not directly responsible for the murder, but he did get his fiancé killed, and that should haunt him for the rest of his life. Hopefully he’s learned the dangers of deceiving and playing people, but based on his behavior, I don’t think it bothered him that much.

I've been studying this one for a while and I cannot fathom Sheri's husband demeanor in this whole situation. I think that somehow he knew who was responsible but never did anything about it. Chilling...

This happened in 1986. About a month and a half before I moved there. There were a number of scandals involving the LAPD so I’m not surprised that Lazarus was able to escape justice as long as she did.

Gotta say, those 2 Detectives here were masterful. I don't know how they managed to make their Investigation seem more like a random observation and less like an intense interrogation, but they succeeded in doing just that. They did what they had to do in order to make the recorded interrogation stand up under scrutiny after being first found to be admissible in court. Everyone did their due diligence and Truth will out sooner or sometimes considerably later. But always in perfect concordance with God's timing to coordinate multitudinous happenings with each other

In all those years between the murder and her arrest, I imagine she did a lot of damage to anyone who was unfortunate enough to have crossed paths with her.
I'm 6 minutes in and I left a comment at the start of the video because I'd heard about this case before and I said the exact same thing as you. Surely some of the cases she was involved in prosecuting would now have grounds for appeal after this came out?
@@roryslaine7896 Depends. There was a Florida state trooper who committed a murder on duty. He got convicted. Even after that, he was called to testify at the DWI trial(s) of people he had arrested.

Unpopular opinion, The man was a POS and it is also his fault that his wife was killed. He should have cut that psycho out a long time ago, yet he gave her some good Closure at some motel room every few days.
Not unpopular at all. Ruttens sexual greed was a huge factor in spurring on an unbalanced and very dangerous woman. There's a similar case in England, and the cheating male who spurred on the violent female, while never a suspect, was held accountable in the aftermath.

I have to disagree. Whatever his faults as a husband, John shouldn't share the blame for Lazarus viciously beating and shooting his wife to death. Admittedly she probably has the craziest crazy eyes on record, which should have been a red flag, but there's surely no way he knew what this officer of the law was capable of..

Her interrogation was perhaps the most damning piece of evidence against her. Easily the most bizarre reactions to questions ever and definitely not how an innocent person would act.
I read The Lazarus Files, and I was left with the suspicion that John might have been planning to meet Stephanie at the condo that morning. When Sherri stayed home, he had no choice but to go to work. Disaster ensued. There are a lot of things that are off about him, though I don’t believe he was actively involved in the murder, mainly because I believe no one could have anticipated Sherri would stay home that day. I have wondered if it is worse than that, and John encouraged her to stay home, but I don’t think that was the case.

She was a cold and indifferent person going thru the motions of a normal human being but wasn't one at all.
Her journal entries betray that she’s not very bright and is quite emotionally flat. The journals and, you know, the murder.

It's great how you explore a topic, but the analysis is presented with brevity and no unnecessary drama. I remember reading an article about this and Sherry suffered brutal multiple facial injuries as well as being bitten. I find it unbelievable that the police would not even suspect this attack as a very personal one, but as you mentioned, the police didn't seem interested in pursing any leads other than the robbery. Well how would that have looked to the department not to mention all the higher ups and so on and so on . It was pretty obvious they were looking elsewhere to same themselves the political heat .
What makes the interrogation video priceless is that she thought she had gotten away with it. Had she been interrogated a week after the murder she would have been more in control. After so many years she was caught off guard because the idea of her going to jail had been eliminated and she thought she would live the rest of her life free as a bird.

I've read a book and watched a lot of videos of Lazarus. You're overview is the shortest and most succinct of a convoluted situation I've seen. I'm not an expert, but I agree 100%. The retirement to allow her to hold onto her income by the PD shows how they still were trying to support her.
Perhaps they let her keep her retirement because she had an adopted child and a husband. Just guessing here.
She doesn't get out until she is 79 so I doubt she will get much benefit from her pension. Pure evil she is.

This isn't related to the video but I want to thank you, Dr Grande. I've had a bipolar diagnosis for about 5 years now and nothing ever seemed to help but then I found you and I resonated with your videos on BPD. I found a new therapist (who coincidentally specializes in personality disorders) and I finally have a diagnosis that works with me and I'm finally getting the care I need. Thank you for your content. I would probably be stuck in the same, barely stable, loop the rest of my life if it wasn't for you ❤

I love how the detectives got her to come in for questioning. That was carefully thought out. In the questioning, she looked very scared.

When I first saw her interrogation video I didn’t understand the story yet so I thought she knew from square 1 that she was coming in for an interrogation. So I thought this was all her planned answers. So - I was shocked when I realized that she thought she was there to give advice!! Then to find out she was a cop- oh my god- let me tell you this was absolutely fascinating to watch going in 100% blindly. The interrogators did an AMAZING job and getting her to spill beans! And all for what? They already had their proof. Friggin genius.
Around the 10:20 ish mark you say while she was being questioned by police she became exacerbated. That’s generally what happens to ‘a diseased state, say in a COPD exacerbation’. You probably meant to say, “she became exasperated”. It’s easy to confuse the two and I know you like to be precise in your presentation. Thank you for all your hard work in educating others.
Stephanie was emotionally unstable when John was using her, but I don't think he knew how bad. Not ending the intimate relationship gave Stephanie a reason to "stick around." Sherri was remarkable. She was attractive, intelligent, admired, and had John's commitment to her in print. I'm assuming this is why the only stolen item inside the home, was their marriage license.

Just like the previous time she had broken into their home and Sherri found her in the living room, she probably broke into their house again and maybe didn't plan to kill Sherri. But this time, Sherri fought her and ended up getting murdered. The book about this crime, "The Lazarus Files" is excellent. And Sherri's husband John behaved despicably! He really didn't seem to give a damn that this sociopath/psychopath was stalking his wife and harassing her.
John's behavior is hard to understand without knowing him but it's also difficult to dismiss that this didn't contribute to Stephanie's violent actions imho.

That's not a result of the character of cops but of how they're organized. We're humans. We form social groups. We tend to protect each other and we expect to be protected by our peers. The challenge is change how policing is organized so that cops feel more accountable to the community and less like an occupying army.

Which is why they should be fired and charged with conspiracy to cover-up a crime... such "crime" can be a violation of a person's lawful, legal, civil and constitutional rights, freedoms and liberties! Yes, attorneys often protect one another and so do medical workers, from doctors down to nurses. Is it human behavior? I don't think so; I believe it has more to do with the "insider" environment, "Us against the world," as unions often spew. But, if you view many of the available videos here on RUclips dealing with cops, Lazarus' character is no different from the many cops shown on RUclips... they're all arrogant, rude, disrespectful and display overly aggressive behavior... across the USA.
The calm in Dr. Grande’s voice and the very much apparent genius in his craft makes him very desirable .
I feel bad for Sherri. If only her husband had been more direct with Stephanie instead of constantly leading her on. Maybe Sherri would be alive.

It’s called sanpaku eyes. It means “3 whites visible” when a person is looking straight out at eye level there shouldn’t be any white visible above or below the iris. If it’s above like Charles Manson, Stephanie Lazarus, look thru mugshots you’ll notice several murderers & psychopaths with this trait. If the whites are visible below the iris then that shows an unbalance from within and will usually manifest in an autoimmune disorder and chronic illness. Think of John f Kennedy, (Graves’ disease) princess dianna, (thyroid disorder and depression) these peopl usually die younger than average. Billie eilish since another with lower sanpaku. So in summary...
~Whites visible above iris = danger to people in their lives, psychopath, sociopath, behaviors and will destroy the lives of others.

Excellent Doc. The Stephanie Lazarus interrogation is up on my list of favs. Imagine thinking you had gotten away with murder after 20+ years, only to have it pulled from under you in a second. You can literally see her panic with severe anxiety she was likely experiencing. I’ve always wondered if she went to sherri’s place that day with the intent to murder her. If so, why use her gun? Anyways, glad she’s in prison now.

She was so confident she had gotten away with this crime, that’s why she answered so many questions. If it wasn’t for the dna evidence from the bite mark, she wouldn’t have been convicted.

It was reported that many of the wounds to Sherry's body were inflicted AFTER her last breath. That we have police officers like Lazarus out there is difficult to fathom.

Watched the story on this and her “interview” a while back. It’s sad she got away with this for so many years, but I’m glad the victims family is finally getting justice.

I respect your evaluation. LAPD’s Blue Wall is notorious and has a long history. After watching only about 10 minutes of Lazarus’ interview, my skin was crawling. I wonder how many homicides she was able to close with her personal experience. I’m glad she’s locked up.

I'll think twice before I call in sick for no reason, after this...
I hate that she got to live comfortably for 23 years but in a way that may have been a more traumatic experience for Stephanie. After she did it I'm sure that she was stressing hard yet the dust cleared and she was just standing there. Fast-forward 2 decades later when she was certain that she got away with it. That had to hurt worse than right after she killed Sherri. It makes it satisfying for me.
She would have gotten away with it too had she not bitten into Sherri.
It doesn't sound to me that there was any real remorse on the killer's part. That she would not be investigated because she was an officer and her unfaithful lover said "she could not have done it," is a poor excuse not to investigate her. I believe the boyfriend/victim's husband was playing a dangerous game and should bear some of the responsibility for this, at least in a moral way if not a legal way. He has some responsibility for this outcome.
