Shug is the first bisexual character I ever saw in a work of fiction that wasn't portrayed as a promiscuous cheat - the book was so important to me when I was still unsure about whether to come out. I was desperately trying to find a video of a production where they actually look like lovers/girlfriends, and this is the best one I've found. The others seem to dance around it a little more, whereas this version actually acknowledges that fact.

I saw this play when fantasia was in it. This song stuck in my head, still to this day, 16 years later. She was absolutely phenomenal. They all were.

I'm never gonna forget seeing her live in NYC in 2017 in September for my birthday. I instantly fell in love with the music, the set design, and it was the first time I had ever seen anything LGBTQIA+ in theatre or in anything. This is my favorite interpretation of this scene. I love the levity in the midst of the deep connection being made. Kudos to both Angela and Fantasia! And also perhaps the director...don't know what caused the difference...anyone know? Could be an actor's choice.

i have read the book and seen the film but have never seen the musical i never even knew there was a musical until yesterday there are not a lot on the musical on youtube but from what i have seen Fantasia is the best the other singers yes they have the singing bang on the notes are on point but i never felt the songs Fantasia made me cry well i balled my eyes out i felt it in my very soul so for me the two videos that i can find of her singing are the best she made me believe in the songs and she didnt mind being ugly the other's were a bit to worried about there looks they are actresses they didn't even try

I saw LaChanze in this and she was great! I have always loved Fantasia's singing, but I remember when I heard that she was playing Celie, I was judgemental and said, "I will not see her in this...." I've seen a few clips and she is really good! I'm sorry I missed that. I will see her next time she's in something!

I saw the new version, and I was disappointed. not from the acting or performance but from the direction. this scene is so much more tender and intimate than the one I saw
I think for one thing, the new production was intimate in ways the previous production was not. It was deliberately minimalist, and it worked, at least for me. I believe they chose to focus upon the fact that these two women needed each other first and foremost in an internally intimate way - psychologically, emotionally, and didn't try to "tell" the audience that they were in a lesbian relationship. They let it evolve, and given each woman's history, it seems a foregone conclusion that they'd find a kind of security in one another that eventually expressed itself sexually. I think it was important to let it transpire that way in this production concept, especially since the final idea is that Celie had been searching for a kind of closure and acceptance outside of her own self-acceptance, until nothing was left to hold her up but the revelation of her own self-love.
Hans Anggraito What I like about the new version is that it's like they both surprise each other by the kiss and it's like they are coming to terms with what they just did. But then throughout the song they come to terms and then it's like they are saying "Okay. I'm willing to open my heart to you. Let's give it a chance". The newer version wasn't as intimate until about the end but then it made it soo satisfying to see them hug at the end. That's what I love about revivals. It allows different interpretations that are all as equally beautiful.
