What irks me, are the “Standing Charges. Roughly half my monthly bill is made up of being charged essentially for gas and electricity that I haven’t used. It is amazing to me that this industry standard still exists - just energy firms scalping the British people.

@@r.h.8754 Sorry, to disagree, but that should be the company’s problem, not the consumer. Equally, it accounts to a punitive tax on the consumer. @@gg-ct3fo Again, the infrastructure is the company’s investment. The cost to the consumer should be what we use, not what we don’t use. Equally, much of the infrastructure, ie distribution has existed for decades. Maintenance of said is up to the energy company. If they are capable of giving dividends to investors they are making more than enough to plough some of their vast profits (record breaking in most cases) back into infrastructure.. invest first and then provide a dividend if the money is available. It is the more appalling the standing charges can make up to 50 percent of a consumer bill. The big word here is consumers! What was the reason given for changing your meter? The tale is incomplete and can not be properly judged without knowing the whole context.
Any threat to break into your property has to be approved in the case of a very serious reason. That includes out of date legacy meter, safety issues, suspicion of stealing electricity by, for instance, by-passing the meter, failure to pay your bill, refusal to disable solar panel back-feed when mains cable work is necessary. All of these are covered by the current Electricty Supply Act and Regulations. I'm sure there's even more legitimate reasons.

I'm a retired, due to illness, metering engineer.
They won't make these compulsory. There are SO many properties where they can't be fitted, due to space on the meter board or signal problems.
When the roll-out started, most customers targeted/bullied were either vulnerable or elderly. When we turned up on the doorstep, most of the lads would talk customers out of the installation.
We were even sent out cold calling on a lot of properties.
The days of fitting trad meters and a good wage were great, but I'm glad to be out of it now.

    • @JosephWood1941-iz6mi
      @JosephWood1941-iz6mi 10 месяцев назад

If you were a metering engineer, then you know full well that smart meters don't take up any more space on the meter board than legacy meters, possibly less. No installation problems in my case. Signal problems can be a problem in some instances. In these cases they will operate in a non-smart mode. You'll still get a home monitor enabling you to monitor your usage in real time and historically. A feature that I use regularly. You don't need fo use it if you don't want to. There's also good mobile signal where I live so the readings are regularly sent to the provider via DCC.
Legacy meters are probably no longer manufactured.

Things might be a little different since I worked for an Electricity Board. They owned the meters and kept detailed and accurate records about the meter including calibration details, when and where it was installed and when it needed to be changed in accordance with the relevant legal standards.
I think that meters are now owned by a specialist meter contractor who leases them out to either the authority who installs them (National Grid, for example) or the energy provider (EON, for example). It would then be the responsibility of the owner of the meter to keep a track of the information detailed above.
Changing a meter at specified intervals is a bit like shops having to have weigh scales checked and calibrated at legally specified intervals. Also fuel pumps.
It's not practical to calibrate an electricity (or gas) meter on situ so it's easier to just change it with a newly calibrated and tested meter.
In the old days when the rotating disc meters were used the removed meters would be stripped down, parts like bearings replaced, and recalibrated and tested. They could then be used somewhere else.
Making sure that measuring devices are accurate, especially when used for trade or similar things, protects both the customer and the supplier.
Speed radar guns must have an up-to-date calibration certificate as does a breathalyser at the police station.
      Hope this helps.

We had the smart meters removed after challenging the accuracy of the readings. They came and put reference meters alongside the smart meters and found the electricity meter was 17% over charging and the gas meter was 6% overcharging so we had them removed and swapped to old school meters and our bills dropped. We had compensation from the company we were with at the time but EON who installed them as they insisted that a smart meter being installed refused as we couldn’t prove that it was inaccurate when they were billing us.
These meters are just a con, years ago there was a group setup to produce a standard protocol for meters used in various industries (gas, electric and water) the group ratified the standard and no one adopted it. This is because they want to restrict the ability and ease of swapping suppliers because you lose the smart side of the meter and have to go take and supply manual readings. There are several generations of these “smart” meters and each gereation doesn’t Improve their accuracy or reliability, why is that?

I will never have a smart meter while I have a choice. I also avoid one of the issues raised by never paying by direct debit when I don't have to! That said, it infuriated me recently to read that the regulator had accepted the energy companies "reason" for charging more to customers who pay quarterly. Apparently we are more likely to default, forget to pay or some such - which I've never done in more than 40 years...

I had a smart meter for my electricity supply. I asked Octopus Energy to put it in dumb mode, as they kept sending my statements at odd times. They said it was not possible for the meter to be put in dumb mode!!! I switched energy suppliers and went back to the company that fitted the smart meter and told them to swap it for a non-smart meter. All of this took months and months of negotiation by E-mail, and finally I now have a non-smart digital meter.
The energy companies have been bribed by the government (£11 billion of it from our taxes), and we must remember that we the taxpayer are sovereign, not the government nor the energy company. They are planning to fit equipment in our private homes that we do not want. In a democracy, we should have the right to object. I am sure there are plenty of non-smart meters about, and if not they can manufacture them.

If they are not doing so already, I believe that energy companies may employ differential pricing to encourage people to have a smart meter installed. Similarly, we may find that switching from one energy supplier to a cheaper one may, in future, be conditional on having a smart meter. One way or another, we will all be forced into using them whether we want them or not. People should also view the Blackbeltbarrister's RUclips postings on energy supplies and smart meters. While smart meters require a 'phone signal to operate (not every household has an adequate signal), it is illegal to wilfully tamper with the signal to, or workings of, a smart meter just as it is illegal to tamper with standard gas and electric meters.

    So, understand the principles.
The tariff you are on is key. If it's a fixed tariff, then no matter what time of day you use the energy, the cost i.e. the p/kWh you pay is the same. If you are on a 'Time of use' tariff and you have agreed different tariffs for the different times of day, then the time of day you use the energy will determine what you pay. However, the data they hold is available to you, and if you want it, request it. They may charge for it, and I have not looked into that aspect, but if they are charging you on time of day, they will hold the data. Otherwise, how do THEY calculate your bill??..😉

Purely out of curiosity,I wonder what a large neodymium magnet (easily purchased) would do to a smart meter?

Unfortunately we did agree to a smart meter after years of saying no, however after a several hours power cut last night the indoor readout failed to turn on properly. I've done a hard reset as per instructions from EDF but may have to wait for 24 hours for it to show the balance. We are pay and go which I do prefer but I do like to know how much electricity I've got as the app won't tell me I assume till the meter is working again.

The government will be able to monitor them. And turn off.
