Dong-Woo Kang, PhD, is the principal investigator on the first clinical trial to show that exercise has a positive effect on men with prostate cancer. Dr. Kang works at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute | DFCI · Department of Medical Oncology and is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Dana-Farver Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School.
Interesting to hear of the positive effects of high-intensity exercise in addition to just jogging/walking. Evidently more research is needed on the impact on progression for men who already have cancer.
Dr. Kang,
I am a prostate cancer patient with biochemical recurrence and my PSA was found to drop from .67 in 07/2023 to .61 in 11/2023 after starting a three/four day per week fitness program in May 2023.
I was found to have gleason 7 cancer in late 2020. My prostatectomy in 02/2021 found advanced cancer, gleason 4+5=9, grade group 5, + margins, pT3a, pN1. My PSA started rising and reached .9 in 09/2021 with CT, Bone and Axumin PET all negitive . I started 2 months radiation with 6 months ADT, (6 months was all I could take due to adverse side affects). The ADT ended in 04/2022 and my PSA was undetectable until it reached .1 in 12/2022. By 04/2023 my PSA .45. I started a fitness program 05.01.2023 consisting of weight training with barbells, strength exercises and cardio three/four days a week. The exercise seemed to reduced the velocity of my PSA as it only increased to .67 in July from .45 in 04/2023.
Through all my research, I had never heard of PSA decreasing without medical intervention. I did not discuss my PSA drop to any extent with my Dr.. I found this article doi.org/10.1002/tre.884 that refered to the INTERVAL-GAP4 ongoing study and will discuss with my Dr. In 03/2024. Thanks
