In 2002 I had the opportunity to connect with Ethan Winer who was then helping people like me about building DIY absorption panels online. I have even sent me my room photos and took personal suggestions on Room treatment. Fast forwarding 22 years ... Thank you Ethan for your great help, so great to see you.
I'm a huge fan of Ethan. He's one of the guys that gave me courage entering into the audio production world by debunking a ton of the costly BS early on in my journey.
My jaw dropped when I saw the band KORN falling for Synergistic Research cables. And that guy even put those stupid stickers on an Apple dongle and they all immediately said it sounded even better. Ufff, that was hard to watch. Espcially those stickers.
Ethan is an absolute treasure. I was hoping that this conversation might have veered into power supplies at some point- obviously the expensive power cables are nonsense, but I’m curious what his thoughts are on power supply design (ala linear vs. modern switching) and implementation. I suppose he’s got a deep enough body of work that he’s probably written about it somewhere I can go find.
love your channel, I remember falling for the plugin hype and thinking to myself. I'm either deaf and dumb or i've been bamboozled! I started running plugins through smaart with a tone generator, something i saw scovill do, some plugins would start to show harmonics pending on how hard they were hit. It's no where as in depth as what you guys have done but it lead me on a journey to come to a conclusion that most people are full of crap and hear what they want to hear even if it's not really there. I've even tricked colleges.
@@APMastering Thanks for that. Gone through your catalogue. My favourite was B1 from your Four EP. Really quite musical and nice layering of synths. I also liked the wonky nature of B1 from Two. You should release more if you have time! You probably have a great understanding of lowend now after mastering the genre for a long time.
Totally agree about the Monty video mentioned in the end, it is absolutely fantastic! Great interview, I hope to see more of this kind on this channel with some audio myth debunking legends. :)
The absolute best debunking of so many of the lies audiophiles are told is the complete lack of any proof to back it up. It's painfully simple... If you cant get verification from reputable sources (not the manufacturer's websites) then don't believe it.
Most of the problems are caused by home sound reproduction is viewed as a hobby of equipment by a large percentage of people. They are not very interested in the actual music.
Do a test on your setup, abx or blind test the two. Some manufacturers intentionally gimp their 44.1 filters to make the higher ones sound better, but a good 44.1 AD or DA converter will be indistinguishable from 96 in 99.9% of situations. Now, using 96 internally in a daw with plugins may be a good idea, it depends on the software. Try it and see...
Why would someone who is working only in the box be a good choice for a shootout between analog and digital? Btw, this discussion is so 2000. Just look up the gear space forum and start reading.
@@StotheEtotheB I did. More opinions are better my guy. Anyone can have their right and wrongs. They don't need to act as annoyed as you bro. Maybe 2000 dicussion is not as relevant in 2024?
@@chiminhtran7534 Its actually absolutely irrelevant and I dont know any professional talking about analog vs. digital anymore. They just use what they like. Its not that im annoyed, its actually the wrong way to look at things. Love conversation. Simple truth always eye opening. ☺️👍🙏 But to understand all this you need a lot of not only audio listening experience, but an engeneering too. So such a knowlege Ethan sharing is a diamond. Thanks a lot! And a bit of my experience: You always need power cables depending on power your system use. Maybe slightly heavier to avoid heatup. Maybe some quality power filters (you must know what is inside). Not more than that. Okay, maybe you need some kind of connection structure and shielding, but it definitely not worth 1000+ euros cables. It's all fake. Better to invest into wave cancellation/damping/diffusive materials and your monitor vibration stands, to break unneeded seismic power exchange between monitors and your table or stands, to improve your overall listening experience.
I've seen guys trying to debunk this new kids channel I think it's doing great keep up the good work A/B theM prove it that's what I say Plus you're offering a free plug-in that's pretty awesome
Alot of great subjects touched on, but with the subject of hardware, I don't think we will ever make a digital recreation of something that sounds exactly like a real tape machine or an LA2A for example. If you have used the real ones you know how much different they sound, a tape plugin doesn't sound like a real tape AT ALL. I think the distortion is so complex that it would take a super computer to simulate, also analog is infinitely scalable if you zoom in on you will eventually have to replicate the atoms in a computer to be able to recreate it.
If that can stop you from hearing what he's saying, then you aren't very interested in what he has to say. I know Ethan a little bit... and trust me, he is completely worth listening to.
Ethan Winer, AP Mastering, Dan Worall. The avengers of audio mythbusting
he came from nowhereand dropped a bombshell with 2 free vsts!
Paul Third has done some good work in this space too.

Wish I found him a year ago
Respect to Ethan, man it’s been about 15 years since I was studying acoustics, Ethan was gospel, nice to see in your video
For analogue HW recall, Wes Audio and Bettermaker have really bridged the gap, great interview !!
100%. shame that stuff is still a tiny bit expensive but I like it in theory
This really is top tier content. Didn´t know about Mr. Winer before this but he seems as real as they come...

I love Ethan's book! It's easy to understand and goes into a lot of depth.
Great interview. I would have liked to hear him answer "what is the essence of good sound". Since that's the crux of the issue.
Ethan is an Audio Jedi. The good side.
Blows my mind his knowledge. Might grab his book and make a pre amp and distortion decice.
i also recommend the douglas self book he mentions
Ethan has pissed off so many Audio gear creators. ha ha ha. WELL DONE.

Cello Rondo - grate piece of music - Thanks Mr. Ethan :)
I've very much been enjoying your channel since you've started posting. And its a bonus that you're seemingly into techno!
yeah i've released a bit of techno too, for example my music as shards

I loved this interview.
When you folks are talking about jitter, are you saying clocking is inaudible?
yes unless something is broken and then you can hear a drop in distortion when it's no longer broken
❤

Yes, it's like a sausage measuring contest.
Any thoughts on the 44k vs 96k ?
its more about the filtering than the sample rate necessarily

Can you make an in-depth video about what we Can and Can't get from analog gear such as preamp and compression?

I dig it but tbh would rather use some crusty old gear for saturation than plugins for that specific task.
