Does phase shift ACTUALLY cause EQ? Dan Worrall response
Dan Worrall made a video not too long ago talking about phase shift when using EQ, and that EQ doesn't cause phase shift but rather phase shift causes EQ. Despite mostly agree with Dan, I offer an alternative perspective with reactance being the thing which causes EQ. I go into detail here with an all pass filter circuit and discuss the importance of reactance.

Free plugins: Do you know all these?
Просмотров 4,8 тыс.14 дней назад
There are many free plugins but most are not game changers. I discuss some free plugins which are so good, they may even be better than some of the best competing paid plugins. www.apmastering.com alainpaulmastering
EQ plugins objectively tested... ZERO difference?
Просмотров 5 тыс.21 день назад
I made two videos previously demonstrating that fancy analogue modelling EQ plugins could be phase canceled against ordinary digital EQ plugins. In this video I do deeper with a more robust methodology and quantify the test results, linking that back to the scientific literature on our ability to hear such differences. Download the EQ test files: drive.google.com/drive/folders/13XnwzrvyLi02g8V3...
Shocking results: 16 EQ plugins tested. Do they all sound the same?!
Просмотров 21 тыс.Месяц назад
After many requests on my first EQ video to put newer plugins to the test, like the slate digital, softube and plugin alliance stuff, I took up the challenge and tested 16 more EQ plugins so show that a normal digital EQ can be used to replicate all of these analogue modelling EQs. The EQ scam exposed. Did you fall for it?
Просмотров 57 тыс.Месяц назад
There is a lot of marketing hype around EQ plugins sounding different, with different flavours and characters. But is this really true? If you know how to use one full featured digital EQ, do you really need a whole bunch of different analogue modelling EQs for different kinds of instruments? Or is one single digital EQ enough? PCM vs Floating Point audio demystified (16bit vs 24bit vs 32bit vs 32bit float)

Differences between bit depths, floating point and fixed point precision in audio, 16bit, 24bit, 32bit, 64bit. apmastering.com
This is very true. People get fooled by shiny interfaces, and this is the case for many plugins. See companies such as Baby Audio - very average sounding DSP / far better sounding alternatives from other companies, but people fall for the shiny interface and marketing.
It's not a scam... no one is falling for anything and there's nothing to expose. All you are doing is matching the curves which anyone can do providing they go out of their way and spend the time matching the curves instead of mixing/mastering with whatever EQ they choose to use whether they are emulated or not. Mixing/mastering engineers will not sit there and try to match eq curves just for the sake of it. Nor anyone at home serious about their song projects. They just get on with the job because they know different plugin emulations will provide them with different results very quickly. As an example... (Lets use the word 'flavor' for arguments sake)... a pultec style plugin eq will give a specific 'flavor' due to a set of specific eq curves with a specific behavior set within the unit/plugin/coding when dialing in by default. An API 550 plugin will give you a different 'flavor' to the pultec due to it's own set curves and behavior when dialing in by default. I could name a whole list of EQ plugins and hardware that all have different 'flavors' (curves and behaviors by default). Some also introduce harmonics and saturation to try and faithfully emulate the hardware's circuitry whether solid state/valve etc.... Yes... anyone can go ahead and grab a stock eq from whatever daw and re create the curves of just about any eq on the market. But the majority of plugin developers are not scamming. Maybe a little over hyped in their marketing approach but certainly not a scam. The terms 'flavor'... 'warmth' etc.... are used to describe the kind of 'sound' or 'texture' an emulated plugin will give you by their default behaviors and curves that are specific to the hardware. 'Faithful' emulation or creation or whatever term you prefer. It's all relevant. Stock EQ plugins within daws were not designed to emulate anything but are no doubt great EQ's and they are able to do just about anything one desires to do when it comes to mixing and mastering with the benefit of problem solving frequencies and much more. Lets face it... most people who like to make music are not interested in a stock daw eq to try and create pultec style curves or any other style of hardware eq. To them it makes more sense to just purchase a pultec style plugin or even hardware and dial in exactly the kind of 'sound' they want very quickly and move on. Just because you can match the curves means nothing. All it validates is that you can match the curves. When plugin developers use terms like 'vintage'... 'warmth'... 'analog' etc... they are just trying to project what kind of 'sound' a potential customer can expect from the emulated plugin. That's all. One thing I certainly agree on for obvious reasons is anyone can use... for instance... a stock graphic eq from a daw and recreate just about any curvature of emulated plugins or hardware eq's. Though it's highly unlikely anyone nowadays will sit in front of a song project within their daw and use the stock graphic eq purely to dial in specific curves that many different hardware units produce. They would need to know/visualize the curves of the emulated plugins/hardware units and the way they behave to even match them. In fact I would go as far as saying that it would be virtually impossible to use a stock plugin and create the exact behavior of eq plugin emulations (and hardware eq's) without referencing the emulations or hardware. And that would still be difficult to do. If someone can null that from the top of their head then they are a genius. But never say never hey. Tech has come a long way since I began my journey within audio production and current technologies that are implemented within digital audio make life easier than ever before. My advise would be to embrace it or fall behind. Please... there's no need to project and spread plugin scam nonsense. If you feel, or are convinced that they are then don't purchase them. If plugin developers were scamming the consumer they would wind up in court and face the justice system. Unless you are able to pinpoint a real 'scam' here I would suggest refraining from using the word 'scam' as you are making defamatory accusations which can get you in some trouble. Why not gather evidence of this suggested scam and bring it forward to the justice system? I highly doubt you would have a leg to stand on with these videos. In fact you would probably incriminate yourself. Let's hope you haven't already done so. And the fact some plugin developers have been around for a couple decades speaks volumes that they are operating as legitimate businesses.
i think you wrote all that before actually watching my videos. i discuss workflow etc
I love seeing you make all the troo beliebers big mad lately! Keep up the good skeptical work
If you don't hear the major difference with the audio example you got a long way to go mate.

Well explained🎉
Can you do the same for compressors?
yes. coming soon
I like GE...
Hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi....
One area where EQs can differ sonically is series vs parallel architecture in the filters and interactivity. Also usability with stepped controls, where limitations can be a *good* thing as it forces choice making. Just as with many classic analog boxes.
Never before in the entire history of recorded music have more people been listening with their eyes.
I like how Dan ends his video by asking "What voodoo magic causes phase shift in an all-pass filter?" and you continue the conversation from there
I'm tired of seeing no one mention ZL Equalizer, it has 16 bands, mid/side, dynamic bands and it's not only free but OPEN SOURCE, Nova is so last-decade ngl
ZL is still version 0.x. It looks promising but using beta software in projects is very risky.
Electronics and audio is simple. Just get a book and study! I did. You can too.
i wouldn't necessarily say it's simple but i like the positive attitude! 😀
YESSS!!!! MORE PLEASE!
This is inception. Dan could now make a video about reactance, saying: there is more to say here. Without physics, we would not have reactence or a universe or electricity...
i don't see it exactly like that but ok
@@APMastering I would argue that framing is about adopting the most useful way of viewing of a concept, not about which of two valid viewpoints is more fundamental. If you are building an EQ or doing engineering, I'd argue your view has more utility, if I'm using an EQ, then it's most useful to know that phase shift is what is bringing about the change. Edit: I didn't mean to demean your video. It's not "just" inception, it's a fascinating and well thought out video. The undertone of one-upmanship is slightly irritating but that's your algorythm-win I guess.
ok i get what you mean. i really tried to avoid any oneupmanship vibes here by praising his video etc however i had a genuine nitpick about saying you can drive filters from all passes because as i show, all passes contain filters, so it's not really a chicken and egg thing like his follow up but a different cause, and i didn't see anyone saying that, so i thought it could be a valuable addition to that theme here on audio youtube
@@APMastering Seems fair. At the end of the day the video is leveraging extranious detail / nitpick to marketing your paid content to Dan Worrels community. At the same time the framing is less useful to Worrels audience. I think I would feel differently if you weren't selling something at the end of this. I don't think you are doing anything wrong, but something feels disingenuous. Edit: The same issue with your "all digital eq is the same", the vibe is clickbaity/arrogant and I'm leaning towards not engaging with your content because of it, which is a shame because you seem informed and smart.
@@GingerDrumsthe explicit public mission statement of my channel is to create entertaining videos on audio and in doing so promote my courses. there's nothing hidden or trojan horsed, it's written in my public youtube about section and i promote my courses in every video. If you don't want to buy my courses, don't, but that has nothing to do with enjoying my content otherwise and i wholeheartedly reject the idea that having products to sell is bad. The other people on youtube are either amateurs with bad content for free, or professionals monetising in another way, for example through affiliate and paid placements which is hidden and not impartial at all. i'm impartial and obviously transparent with what i'm selling. if you don't like my offerings, you can watch my content without buying them
Yes, this is great! very effective tutorial. Would love to see more on op amps, tubes and transformer interactions etc...
thanks. i feel like this video was maybe too complex though and so got less interest than previous videos, so i need to find a better balance of complexity i seems
I wonder if Fabfilter pays these guys to talk all this nonsense that has nothing to do with mixing a nice song. Just making videos telling you how shit plugins are, and that Fabfilter ProQ3 is the perfect EQ for everything. While Serban Ghenea uses a "shit" channel strip called the Metric Halo Channel Strip complete with cramping bell curves, and gets paid $10,000 a mix, and has countless hits mixed, and Grammy's for his engineering. He also uses a "shit" Waves plugin for his vocal compression "CLA76", and a "shit" de-esser called the Waves Renaissance De Esser. Also has that digital "shit" distortion box called the SPL Machine head that makes "fake" tape saturation. Then has all these analog emulations from UAD which are all total shit of course because "Fabfilter" exists. His mixes have loads of "unmusical" aliasing artifacts, "digital flatness", and all the other horse shit RUclips gurus say about the tools he uses, and he makes audiophile gold with his mixes, wins Grammy's for best engineered album, and a RUclips know it all asshole comes along, and tells you all his plugins are shit, and that all you need is the Fabfilter total bundle. Lmao. Remember folks, buy his $59.99 course on how to use an EQ, because you can't trust your ears. And make sure to use his "code" when you go buy Fabfilter ProQ3 to save an additional 10% off your next purchase!
what a strange comment. i'm not an affiliate for FF. This video is on reactance not any of those plugins and i've never talked about any of those plugins before. Also, i don't know why any of those plugins are necessarily shit or who is supposed to have said that. who are you even attacking here?
I'm not a big fan of analog audio in general. I once had a course on it in university and while I forgot most of what was going on there I still remember that every analog component has multiple functions at the same time. one of those basic components for example both lowpass AND saturates the signal, which would be 2 entirely unique and seperated processes in digital audio, which is why I feel like digital audio does a more precise job at explaining how certain effects work. for example filters can be either FIR or IIR. they both consist of short gained delays and the only difference is that IIR filters also have feedback delays. the real question is not "what's a filter?" because if you tell people it's just a bunch of delays they still don't know why the delays cause phase shifts or frequency responses, but the question is how to calculate coefficients for filters to make them have these specific properties. and suddenly you find yourself in the mids of terms like z-plane, complex numbers, unit circle, ecliptic filters, biquad filters etc. so if i was asked what's a filter i'd say: a configuration of delays based on trigometric equations to fulfill certain frequency and phase responses
not sure about saturation here in the LP filter as caps and resistors don't saturate as such... most of the formulas you use on dsp come from analogue principles. of course circuits are more complex because of current flow and impedances but there are many shared principles and a lot of the math you use literally originates from telephone electrical engineering manuals
@@APMastering that's true. a lot of the great ideas in dsp come from analog inspiration. but still they end up being more precisely formalized in the world of dsp math
Love to see the more deep divey technical stuff- thanks!
Very interesting subject. Awesome. And yes Dan does awesome videos .
thanks
Thank you for those rigourous tests! A few hours of lifetime on those EQ's saved. I think such "obsessions" can interfer with seeing the bigger picture and distracts from the more substantial decisions. Even if some people can hear more miniscule differences than most, it doesn't mean it matters to anyone else. So at least one could be honest and consider it a personal hobby than claim that it's contributing to successful records etc.
exactly
When I got into research to figuring out how to create my own plugins. I concluded that most plugins might being using the same effects when coding while using a different user interface to present it. After that discovery, I kind of loss interest into wanting to create a plugin because I didn't have anything new or special to present out to the world and creating plugins is hard without knowing the proper available tools. (Btw I am not much of a coder, but I am a graphic designer. I couldn't get passed all the errors with coding. lol) Learning about plugins also changed my perspective about having so many at a time. The extra clutter kind of confused me anyways. So, for now I'm sticking with fl studio for it's basic stock plugins and a few free ones.
I just developed a compressor plugin. I think there is still more to offer because a lot of people want to create plugins that are easy to use rather than powerful
What do we do?

Is this electronic engineering?
yeah
This has been too funny. Hahahah yuh gotta love NOVA!!
Ohhh, thank you so much!!! Amen!
it is crazy, how these people will battle over nothing just to prove their delusion. It is literally evident here. If it had significant harmonics, richness, enhancement it would not have nulled.
Just a wierd shape! that techno thingy nice, kinda missing sub and too unnaturraly compressed tho, or maybe just too comped. Cheers alan, nice video.
bro forgot nova
Looking forward compression video!
One issue with Nova is that it doesn't do really narrow dips, Q is limited to a rather wide values.
narrow EQ sounds bad anyway
We had a '74 Nova, dark green
Regarding JND: For listeners, ~1dB matters. For mix engineers, ~.5dB matters. For mastering engineers, ~.1dB matters.
The JND doesnt changed based on the context that you are listening in. It's an academic value based on human biology.
Vcv Rack was a curve ball.
But have you looked at Nova?? You're missing out dude!
My authors top 5 plugins 1 nova 2 nova 3 nova 4 nova 5 nova
Thing is: the eq curves those emulations offer are the thing that makes them 'special'. Ofcourse you can recreate all those emulations with a clean digital eq after the fact. The fact that it's possible to do so is irrelevant. Lot of the sound of iconic eq's is because of their curves and how they interact. Trying to copy the curves with a digital eq is indeed possible, but what is the value? Maybe they are right in saying that it's a faithful emulation of the hardware if that the hardware doesn't add as much audible saturation etc except for the curves they offer. A big part of the '3D sound' of hardware is due to different setting for left and right because you have to set them manually and then there's always the calibration/tolerances of the left and right channel which are slightly different.
I'm wondering if vcv rack can replace something like serum. I'm not really trying to spend about $189 for serum
for monophonic it's much more powerful than serum
