It's funny how kids nowadays say "but i liEk Valve Portal 2.0 because it challenges them brain puzzles". Kid, the cake is fake, go finish Supaplex if You want a real brain challenge.
Supaplex is also longer, though. I agree Portal was mostly easy (though there were a few tricky gel puzzles in Portal 2), but Supaplex is a very long game and has a lot of time to grow in difficulty. I actually did finish this a long fucking time ago, the only exception was level 104 because it was bullshit and I used an exploit to pass. There was no fun puzzle to it, you just had to be EXTRA careful to not lose even a single infotron to an accidental explosion in an ultra-random level and that sucked ass, so I used a trick/glitch that allows you to get more than 9 infotrons from an electron, which made the level really easy. Everything else? Finished legitimately, with no bug exploitation. I did play with the intended speed of 35 FPS, though, using SpeedFix. A few levels are just insane if played on 70 FPS, which is the speed some people encountered on faster computers. Favorite level would probably be 108. IMO, the cleverest one.
Portal 2 is for those looking for a polished experience with a bunch of brain food along the way. Supaplex is for mentally insatiable fuckers who just want as much brain food as possible and couldn't care less about any other aspects. That's why Supaplex has so goddamn many levels, too. "Knowing when to stop" would be a detriment to such a player, not a virtue. Anyway, I still hold it that Supaplex has levels that are more difficult and creative in their puzzle design than anything in Portal. Levels 103 and 108 come to mind. However, as an overall experience, Portal 2 is better because it has more than *just* the puzzles.
Call me crazy, but the instrument that starts playing that descending pattern at 0:15 sounds different from how I remember it from my childhood. I remember it sounding brighter, more percussion-like, and maybe even an octave higher.
I have memories of this music as my dad would play the game. I started playing (and got hooked) the game when I got a bit older, and still enjoy playing it with DosBox.
This is basically a mix of Pac-Man and Boulder Dash. You collect the key items and get to the exit when you've got enough, whilst avoiding boulders and other hazards along the way.
I just realized that the picture is Murphy about to crush a resistor with its other resistor friends angry complaining in the background! It's quite the morbid image!
All of them. This game has the most inane sound programming I've ever encountered in a DOS game. It's not a MIDI file at all. There are special preprogrammed routines to handle Adlib, any SB, Roland and PC Speaker *separately*. The Adlib and SB versions sound the same on all 100% compatible cards. If Supaplex doesn't like your sound choice, it will just freeze, possibly requiring a deletion of supaplex.cfg If your card is not 100% compatible with Adlib, SB, or Roland... you're out of luck.
I love to hear the music after the level starts. Doing nothing, till the MURPHY sleep in the centre green PCB :v haha.. I missed my father, who love to play this game too.. May Allah bless us all till jannah..aamiin
You can play all supaplex likewise levels in the open source game Rocks and Diamonds. And you can easily skin it to be completely like supaplex (including this music).
@TheSupremeSkill Yes, I know for DOSBox. Thank you for your suggestion, though. :) It's true that DOSBox is good (and only) replacement, but having an old computer and playing it as programmers designed it, hits nostalgia so hard. Ohh, God... time flies so fast. And I wished all those brand new computers to come. How naïve I was. But, thanks again for sharing this great music! :)
Ahh, good ol' times. I remember playing Supaplex on Intel 80286. :) What kind of absurd is when all these new shiny computers won't ever run the game. :( Damn, I should've kept the old computer.
@astralrock tbh, there is a program called dosbox which can run pretty much all of the old dos games on a modern pc. You have probably heard about it etc, etc,... But I got your point. Thanks for listening.
@otus95 Aika epeli. Hyvä peli, joskin helvetin ärsyttävä kun johkin kenttään jää oikeen kunnolla jumiin, ja aina alusta. En ikinä pelannut sitten loppuun tätä, häpeäkseni myönnän.
I play it on my android phone, can be downloaded from andrioid market for free, I used to play this when I was little, 5-6 years, and now it`s so great I can play it on my phone and looks exactly like on pc
I think I got through 50-60 levels. It took only a few years of endless amounts of torturous attempts. Then my good ol' 95 burned out most likely due to supaplex, heh.
A MIDI file can be improved by a better card. Supaplex, however, *assumes* you have an old (aka bad) SB card. If you have a newer one, the "new" features will not be used. If the "100% compatible" portion stays the same as it was in the old card, it will (of course) produce the same results. If ANYTHING in that portion is different, the game freezes. A better card may give you a better frequency response, but that's IT. Everything else is the same on all Supaplex-compatible Adlib/SB cards.
And which SB would you be talking about? It's like saying singing sounds the same as a trumpet. Some of it probably sounds quite similar, most of it sounds nothing like it.
Mäkin alotin tän just alusta niin et oon jossain level 31:s.
Supaplex is maybe the greatest puzzle game of all times.:D It's just so annoying that it can be played only with DOSBox if your computer has windows Xp, vista or 7 :P
For those who are not familiar with Dosbox, Supaplex is available on Steam. This "remaster" has slightly different feel to it compared to the original but it still plays great in my opinion! store.steampowered.com/app/833140/Supaplex/
Use DOSBOX :D And then download all the old games. It's a DOS emulator! It works almost flawlessly, had a problem with 1 game out of 50 i tried during my "retro childhood gaming weekend"
That's ridiculous. Being 100% compatible doesn't mean they sound identical, especially since different soundblasters use different chips and different frequency cut off points. It could be very similar for many types of Soundblaster - possibly for all types which are compatible with this music, but it they still be noticeably different.
Btw, supaplex was rewritten and runs without any emulator/dosbox. you can get it from here github.com/sergiou87/open-supaplex/releases look for the one that says windows or macOS depending on your computer :)
Kids who played Nintendo got stuck with Mario (one of the worst games, imo) while kids with PCs had access to Supaplex. Life sure isn't fair, but thank the gaming gods I had a PC in the 80s and 90s.
Imo Supaplex ia hardly the best example of a good PC title and it's a puzzle game while Mario is a platformer. Both are good in their own way. The best thing about Supaplex is the music.
"The sound blaster and AdLib version of this music are all the same" Yeah, if you're half deaf. The only difference is NOT in FX, the quality is different, and of course it depends what soundblaster you're using - you could have a soundblaster 1 (really shit), AWE 32 (really, really shit), AWE 64 (really quite good), or an X-fi (IDK, but probably really really good) AWE 32 makes the monkey island theme sound like annoying humming.
