Another good video Jelle. I know that feeling of getting carried away doing more and more when you only intend to do one thing! I separated the last of my maple air-layers today and in the end only one of the five didnt produce roots. So that must be a win? The last one Ive used your method and not sphagnum moss. It will be good to compare things next spring so thanks for the idea. Stay busy :)
@@GrowingBonsai i hadnt thought of it like that😁 No...one of the other channels mentioned the pain of removing moss. So we shall see whether the results make one better than the other. Cheers.
In Germany it is Not allowed to dig out trees in summer, while birds and other animals habe their children. You need a permission to dig trees out, I think in most european countries
Absolutely. Good point. I did not dig this, I just pulled it off a pile of trees where the neighbour was dropping the trees he was digging! In a way, I saved a plant!
I know right! But.. If you do a video and you then do not do what you recommend.. That is not a great idea. But I thought everybody recognizes the situation :)
@@GrowingBonsai Well, as you know I'm a novice 🙂. I would let the leader grow and thicken. I guess in a few years you. can carve again to smoothen the taper
What do you think about buying ladybirds to release in your garden? I have heard of other people who have tried this method to protect their bonsai, but I can't help wondering if they would just fly away to wherever they want to go 😄 The aphids have been after my bonsai and spinach, even until almost mid winter. They're a royal pest! 😤
ladybird? Or 🐞 ladybugs? The prior will not make a diff. The second.. We have them all around and they come in by themselves. Which is exactly the reason why i avoid poison as much as possible!
@@GrowingBonsai ah, I mean lady bug 🐞. I was wondering why the confusion and googled it. Apparently it's a British/ Australian thing. We call them ladybirds, and everyone else calls them ladybugs! What is what you refer to as a ladybird in Germany? Is it an actual type of bird? Either way we don't seem have a lot of ladybirds where I live.. which I can completely agree about trying to solve pests organically. It's not easy though!
@@katyb2793 I am not sure, there is a lot of slang involving ladies and birds, but actual animal called that.. dunno! Yeah, poisonpoor growing includes accepting a few holes here and there 👍
Great content! I was quite surprised you do huge cuts in summer, but big cuts in winter. If those huge cuts can be done in summer, how come big cuts can`t?
@@GrowingBonsai nono. You got me wrong. All care guides and recomendations online say prune this years growth in summer and do big cuts in late winter or early spring. Now you say do huge cuts in summer. What is the difference between big cuts and huge cuts and why can’t we make big cuts in summer if we can do huge cuts then?
@@greenmachinesweden My personal opinion is that some things in bonsai teaching are fundamentally flawed or at least misunderstood. A lot of things are done because this is how it i taught, rather than because people understand the fysiology behind it. As a biologist I sometimes have a very different view. I think big cuts should be made when a tree is actively growing.
Very nicely done! I am growing roots on a branch that I’ve cut from a weeping willow, it is 1 inch thick. In 2 weeks roots are growing and new buds have started. I will follow your method for healing the upper cuts of the 2 branches. Thanks for the instructions Jelle.

Very interesting video for my future trees! 👍
...and we will never know what happened 4 weeks later!
Ohw.. That is annoying! Never thought about the last seconds of the video having these YT links n top of them!

Whats at the base, a ground layer?
Ha, just the regular roots. Hoping it will develop a good nebari all by itself!
😂😂😂 dont form the trees guys but i cant help myself 😂😂😂😂😂 we all do that anyway

I do the same Jelle , i tell my wife ill be 5 minutes in the garden , 2hrs later im still wiring ... its infectious
Yeah, never say anything and just go outside I think
@@GrowingBonsai Yes I do that as well , i only say 5 minutes when she asks me how long ?
What do you spray on the leaves?
Hi Supercar, that was soap with spiritus!
Nice video, and I can see the tree a few years from now.... but what is the carving tool you are using? and where can I geto hold of one?
Hi Kenneth, thank you! THe bit I am using is a bonsai nibbler, which is available from the same named website!
Hi Jelle, great vid to pass knowledge on 👍any link for the bit you use? :)
Hi Alessio, it is a bonsai Nibbler, availa through its own website, or bonsai4me
Great video Jelle 👍
Thanks! Glad to hear it was enjoyable!
That's going to become a nice tree in no time, well done Jelle.
Thank you Martin. I think it will be a nice one too, indeed. Maybe 3-5 years to get the basic tree set up!
Tip... When carving.. use a dust mask ;-)
Hi Kurt, good tip. In this case, the dust load is quite low. But in general, yes agreed! How do you hande the reduced area you can see?

Nice! Keep in mind that willow is a poor healing species: It might take a long time to grow over!
