This is my era I was born way too late what a good time these people had back then you wait till you see this video I know you already saw it already but wow
Loved that. Cab was the king of scat. The Nicholas Brothers were the best tap dancers in the 40's. Fred Altair said it was the best dance sequence on film. Stormy Weather is a classic. Lena Horn was so beautiful, and a great singer.😊 much love from California.
When I was a little girl and stayed at my grandma's house, I used to watch TV late at night. One night I saw this movie on late night TV, and I dreamed about that dance scene for maybe 50 years until I found out what it was. Beautiful....
One comment about Cab Calloway and his band. Of all the big bands of this era there was only three absolute best in the world. Cab's Band and the others were Count Basie and Duke Ellington bands. No other band even came close to perfection of these 3. Not Glen Miller, Dorset, Les Brown and all the others none of them came close. It's to bad they are long gone. But thank God we have them on video and recordings. As far as the dancers go the Nicholas Brothers were the best of the best. God bless them all.
There is a longer cut where Cab comes back out and everyone gets up and starts dancing. All are African-American service members and their ladies. Dressed-up and so classy!
It's from the film Stormy Weather, released in 1943. Cab Calloway and his band are terrific! The Nicholas Brothers did the dance sequence in one take with little to no practice. They later taught dance and Michael and Janet Jackson were among their pupils. Fred Astaire said they were his heroes and that this number was the “greatest dance and music” sequence in the history of cinema. Mikhail Baryshnikov declared they were the most “amazing dancers” he’d ever seen.
1943. This was the Cotton Club goes to Hollywood essentially. The whole crew is there! Cab Calloway, Lena Horne, Nicholas Brothers etc. etc. etc. Here's one amazing fact for you: THIS WHOLE SEQUENCE WAS DONE IN ONE TAKE. That's right, they did only one take of this. That's all Maestros Cab, Fayard and Harold needed. That's how GOOD they were!
Love this music and the dancing. With this music you don't need a gym. The dancing or moving to it, is pure exercise. Now for the Nicholas Brothers, we'll what can I say? After the first split I went for an ice pack. It hurt watching. Love your reaction.
Entertainment had a different meaning back then. But it still translates to today's scene. Cool. If you can't appreciate it, then you've got no soul. The smile never left your face. Beautiful.
Your uncle was a tap dancer and you never heard of the Nicholas Brothers. Please older generation-show your grands the dance and music that inspired their own favorite performers.
@@SimplyKSimone There was one time when Cab Calloway was working with Al Jolson in The Singing Kid. During production, Cab had been given a dressing room inferior to Jolson’s. When Al Jolson heard about it, he went to the studio head and threatened to walk out unless Cab was given dressing rooms equal to his. He also insisted that Cab get star billing and be treated equal to him.
This is from the move "Stormy Weather" 1943. I understand it was shot in one take because thay didn't have enough film to do it a second time. Had to get it the first time. Everything was in short supply during the war. (WW2)

It was a great dance. if you like Tap then you need to watch Tap with Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis Jr. It has some of the best tap dancers in it.One of the Nicholas brothers is in it .
Thank you so much for reacting to this CLASSIC dance routine. Please react to another classic dance routine called Whitey's Lindy Hoppers "Hellzapoppin."

This was an Amazing performance by the Nicolas Brothers ..and this was done in one take 😊

No one did it better before and no one has done it better since
Fred Astaire said this was the best performance he’s seen on screen. He wasn’t wrong.
It can out in 1943 from the movie " Storm Weather" .
The definition of smooth.

Simply K.Simone you couldn't have done a better song and video to react too! Simply talented pardon the pun!
The Nicholas brothers were amazing. I can’t watch the splits. 😮 They would be super famous today. Where do you see talent like that????
The only modern hoofer who can get anywhere close to the Nicholas Bros is Savion Glover.

Awesome
The first movie made by a big Hollywood studio with Afro American stars, not just as extras..
The elder (taller) of the two taught himself how to dance and he taught his brother.
Most of the 1920s was the silent film era. Pretty sure the first sound film was 1927.
That is probably the all time best dance caught on film. Pure 100% brilliance! And Mr Cab Callaway is always divine!
I agree

That’s back when music had some serious soul!
It's like a combination of tap, ballet, and modern dance.

Checkout Cab Calloway’s Minnie the Moocher.
Also, if you've ever seen the movie The Five Heartbeats, Harold Nicholas played "Sarge", the group choreographer.
He's also in 'Tap' with Gregory Hines and a whole slew of tap dancers like Sammy Davis Jr, Sandman Sims, and Savion Glover.
Absolutely looooove Cab Calloway!
