Brexit : Bruce Dickinson, Iron Maiden singer, explains why he voted "yes"

  • On March 29, 2019, the United Kingdom will no longer be European. Not to displease the famous British band Iron Maiden, who has never hidden his vote "Yes" in the referendum on Brexit, two years ago. Bruce Dickinson say this agreement must be seen as an opportunity rather than a threat. "It will not change the status of the UK much, but I think it will strengthen our economic capacity, which is good for us and, in the long run, good for Europe". And if the music industry is worried about the promotion of its artists in Europe, Bruce Dickinson is once again against this idea. And to denounce : "Bullshit!".

    The EU, UN & NATO have together ensured 70+ years of peace and the prosperity it brings to the EU member states. Why anyone would want throw this away is beyond me. It's also worth pointing out that the UK like other EU members, has a veto if it doesn't agree with proposals such as an EU army or Turkey joining etc.

    I find it always a bit annoying when musicians get political. Bruce Dickinson however, is not your every day musician, the man is highly educated and has and does business with pretty much every country in the world. Although I agree with Bruce on the point of Brexit and his visions on the current state of the EU, his way of explaining left me a bit puzzled. Especially the Putin thing at the end. Lastly the look of him worries me, maybe it's just at the time of shooting this clip fatigue was an issue, but I've known Bruce to be always in good health and looking like it. Anyways, hope he's still kicking it like usual, may Iron Maiden continue to be one of the most successful band on the planet for another 250 years.

    Bruce is speaking as a business man, both as Iron Maiden being a corporation that travel and play all over the world and also as man who runs other businesses. Now you as an indie musician, do you think you will be able to travel around Europe as easily? Probably not. Can you fly to America, Australia etc to try to promote your music in those countries? Probably not. The English do support brexist so no surprise Bruce supports it as well, but at present, and looking at the deal the UK gov has negociated, it doesn't seem the UK will be in a better position the it currently is as a member of the EU. Man our democracy is broken. Each one voting for themselves and no-one thinking about countries and states as a whole.

    What's absurd is believing that the UK is a democracy from the perspective of the common man. I left a good while ago due to the plummeting standard of living. The governing attitudes of 'we are doing this (for ourselves), if you don't like it, tough'. The overbearing repression and dwindling choices left me feeling so hemmed in that the only logical choice was to leave. And thank god I did. That the UKgov has such scant regard for the general wellbeing of it's citizens is tragic.

      +Dave Shortland I agree with you about the powers who rule the EU in this moment (I'm also Italian, so I feel the same way about that politicians who wants Europe to be a government from the bankers and a satellite of the U.S., instead of making her own policies, who make the whole Europe, even Britain, great after WW2)
      But I'm not agree with you about how symbolic the monarchy would be. If it is symbolic, why are they here? Symbolic is an old castle, a museum, a system who can made Sex Pistols be banned by the national radio (BBC) just for writing a song that means protest (God save the queen) isn't symbolic at all!
      And about payments, the truth is an average worker in England, and the rest of Europe, specially in the 90s of the previous century, never had that problem that they have now to find jobs, and better, good jobs, specially younger citizens.
      The solution is a general change of political systems in the whole Europe (parliamentary system worked great when Europe controls their situation, but now the things are different), in order to make democracy more participative to the whole society, and not just governments made by elites. First that, and then. Riunite Europe to make a strong economy, they can be the third, and not the fifth. Businessmen like Dickinson should understand that, specially if brexit is a fact, that means Bruce's opinion is not the minorities opinion, but au contraire!

    Musicians should stick to making music. I had Bruce as a reasonable person, unfortunately, he suffers from the same delusions as most Brexiteers. Delusions of grandeur and nostalgia for the realm. Britain will soon reap the meagre harvest of their ill-advised choice, which the majority of the youth in Britain does not support. Shame they didn't go out to vote in droves. Scotland wants to remain, Ireland is remaining and in the end, Britain will come crawling back and will plead to be admitted again. And this time we will not accept silly wishes for rebates and the like. No more profiting without contributing you pesky dimwits! No more ruling the waves, no God to save your bacon, just working together with the rest of the world on equal terms without being arrogant twats.
    And sure, the EU is not without its flaws, but it's a damn sight better than what we had previous to WW II. As a European Citizen I can travel anywhere within the EU and apply for a job, buy a house and start a family. I pay the same taxes, whatever the equivalent of the NHS / insurance, etc.
    So I am not quite sure what Bruce is implying with regards of "travelling", so I will leave it up in the air.
    As for the UK having options for trade, that the UK does. But you will have to trade by WTO tariffs if you leave the single market, meaning trade will be more expensive. Making trade deals with countries isn't something you do overnight either. Whilst both the EU and the UK will lose several benefits of the UK leaving the EU, the UK stands to lose more than the EU does.

You don't do every day trade with US, AU, Japan you do with your neighbour countries... and guess what, you're on the borders of EU... Try to get fresh products from Australia or US and lets see how fresh they gonna be when they arrive... or try to do every day commerce with other countries and have the huge amounts of taxes and import tariffs paid while you have a basic salary... Tell that Brexit is good to the fishermen, people who pay crazy import taxes for goods, businesses that their EU clients will stop doing business with them because it is going to be expensive, farmers that they gonna have their products ruined while being trapped in customs... The sad thing is that people that support Brexit are people that have the Empire nostalgia complex... The world has moved on and we can all move on ahead if anachronistic ideas like that fade away... You're a man of huge influence and a great artist so be careful what you spread and think twice your words... and if not for EU resistance like from the Greeks and Russians securing the victory in WW2 now you would be wearing a swastika as a symbol... so don't run away from EU values... it's a slippery slope and we can easily fall back into fascism and populism that will lead again to hatred... History is there and needs to always be remembered..🇪🇺🇪🇺🇪🇺

  • @Nanou197373
    @Nanou197373 5 лет назад +5

    Brucey, I admire you, your band and your music, but... The reason why you've never had any trouble touring anywhere in the world is because the UK shares hundreds of bilateral agreements from within the EU that have been built over the last 50 years, and coming out of the EU means they'll end and would all have to be renegotiated one by one. You can't apply the logic of the 1960's to 2018, it's not at all the same context and the UK enjoyed so many concessions within the EU that has precisely helped it get to the top ranks of the world economy, but since Brexit was announced, it has sunk to the bottom of the G7 growth forecasts. It's like tearing half a centuries of laws, regulations just to spend money remaking the very same thing with the label "UK" on it, meanwhile, the world will be moving on while the UK is stuck into having to remake everything it has willingly chosen to abandon: It is not a punishment like Bruce says, it's by choice, removing itself from all treaties (that's what Article 50 does & clearly says). The EU therefore takes the UK out of all the treaties, as per article 50's request. Having a lot of money, being a huge band will not make a whole lot of difference to you, but for much smaller bands relying on extensive touring where every penny counts, they will be delayed by extra paperwork and lost time & money to do so. The falling Sterling would also make everything much more expensive. If you want to look at the failings, it's the current Tory government & their despicable legacy, their lies, their corruption, that has been responsible for the country's problems, not the EU. As for the claim that the UK has always been a trading nation, fair enough, but then why is it choosing to come out of what is the largest trading bloc in the world with a seat at the negotiating table to make rules? It does not make any sense at all. If you look at who are the largest economies to trade with, the political climate of "America first", then Russia and China, the UK is dwarfed in size by being on its own. Besides, in the context of a global economy, the rules are now increasingly global too. Having total independence is a pure fantasy; every country in the world has established similar close ties to their closest market. The EU's the largest and is on Britain's doorstep. Brexit is removing the UK from all the treaties without replacing them by anything, so he's wrong to say that after the withdrawal agreement, there's some sort of automatic new relationship with the EU: no there is not - in the case of no deal. After March 29 next year, it'll have to redo everything from scratch to re-establish every treaty that the UK's withdrawing itself from: in other words, it's only the beginning of decades of Brexit mess.

    A lot of BS... It's just that people who don't like politics tend to listen to people who don't do politics but sound smart, with a view that's similar to their own... In that case, no, brexit doesn't open the UK to the world, it closes it. That was the whole point : no more immigration, no more common market. Regarding immigration, it'll be the same. The UK needs skilled workers, so will still give visas to the French or Germans, and as far as illegal immigrants are concerned, they'll still find ways to get in, the same way Mexicans still find ways to get to the US. Regarding the common market, at the moment the UK is seen as unstable and weak, foreign powers like China or Japan prefer dealing with the EU, seen as more stable, and with more market of course.. Everything he's saying is wrong... If a band wants to tour anywhere, no they can't go anywhere they want... Plenty of musicians have had issues with visas, especially in the US. Brexit will not strengthen the UK economy, it's already taking a plunge. Why ? Because all that has been said for brexit was a bunch of lies. Economically, the UK benefits more from the EU than it suffers. UK companies have many of their manufacturing steps done on the mainland, as well as storage. Mini Cooper is a perfect example. And the rest ? Just some right wing crap about Eastern European immigrants. By the way, how's that brexit deal going in your parliament ? Oh yeah you've been stabbing yourselves over it for two years now... You think it'll be good in the long run ? Well you'll be dead before you see it anyway...

      EU is acting like a friend of mine. He opened one shop. Before that shop stabilise and start making profit, he opened a second one. Then a third one and then a fourth one. Then he started closing them down one by one because the imaginary profit from been present in 4 locations never came, and ended up being employed in a real estate agency.
      EU had its original 12 members. Its primary target should be to close the economic gaps between north and south create the conditions for prosperity and THEN start introducing SLOWLY new members. Instead they introduced countries like Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, and the rest post socialism mad max lands, where 200 or 300 euros are considered a good monthly wage. How are these people are going to get to the level of Holland or Austria? Answer. They cant. They are being intruduced as a version of european china with low wages and minimal to no labour rights. Albania in EU? what the fuck are they thinking? We are talking about a country run by mafia and ak 47s are more common than FIAT in Italy.

    That whole bit about having no problems with touring is incredibly short sighted. How do bands start out? Bands freely moving between countries on tour has created a diverse scene of independent music in Europe, surely that's going to become a whole lot harder with Brexit? Most independent bands based in Europe do not tour outside of Europe because the visa's alone are unaffordable. It's a real shame people of his kind of status don't recognise this, as it could be about to become really complicated for bands that don't have private jets to get in and out of the UK on tour.

    • @scottkingofska
      @scottkingofska 5 лет назад +3

      Beatles started out in germany, Visas are not that expensive. Couple of quid. How about rather than touring the whole of europe making 1/2 to pit stops in each country you pick a country and make a week of it, then do each as they come.

    • @HandsomePuggg
      @HandsomePuggg 5 лет назад +1

      @@scottkingofska For a band from the UK to go and tour the US it can be up to £5,000 in visa costs. That's an extreme example, but it's one that prices out a lot of bands from doing it. It's also not just the expenses though, it's the layers of complications it adds too when you want to hop between countries. The pit stops idea is a good one I think, as there's lots of benefits like building a more of a fanbase within an area rather than spreading it thin. I imagine that may well become the way!

    • @lakingpin6370

      Bands need to build up a solid core audience in their own country before considering touring elsewhere. Hard graft needs to come first, have a day job during the week and then drive up and down the country playing any pub you can find. Do this for 4 or 5 years and if the band is any good it will have a loyal following, by which time they should be able to embark on a tour, it's worth trying to get on the bill of an existing tour which may help with costs and planning etc. But to get to that point takes a lot of hard graft and dedication, something that isn't always recognised in the current " i want it all now " world.

    A bit simplistic and deluded view from someone as intelligent as Bruce. You can't set a divisive vote that is basically based on removing fellow europeans the same rights they have in all Europe and then talk about "let's all get along". And of course you tour non EU countries with no problem, like you are the one getting the visas and forms for you to play in US. In EU it is seemless, on other countries it isn't...only how would you know. Someone else does that job.
