Having a black car myself. I just learned the accept the fact that I’m gonna have to wash my car once a week and just live with the dust. Car covers are a pain in the ass to use so I’ll just keep washing it lol
and you won't...for every person that says it will cause scratches, there are 10 people that will tell you, you won't...if you use it wrong, it definitely will...it should be used very lightly and to only get off light dust and pollen...its not really meant to clean your car.
Right on schedule, the guy who uses the method that's been proven over and over again to be damaging, but "has never had a problem." Either your car has been kept in a vacuum, or you've been swirling it with a duster, it's one or the other. Now those swirls may not bother you, which is totally fine, but they are there without question.
Sweet car! I’m not ashamed to say that back in the day I was a car duster guy. My friends at TRC helped me up my detail game. They even answered my taxidermy and personal intimacy questions. ❤️
I live in the desert, too $$$ an time consuming to wash three times a week. Dust very lightly, spray your duster with spray wax every third use and seal in bag.
This is great and raises good points. And for my motorcycle, which has a normal carnuba wax coating on it, i always use a proper wash. But for the car, the car duster is much quicker. I ceramic coated my car and now use the car duster max twice a week. i get the ceramic coating replaced every year.
Actually the duster is fine as long as you follow the directions. Too many people don't understand that you LIGHTLY dust the vehicle. Meaning the duster barely touched the paint. They have a tendency to apply too much pressure or allow the dusters weight to sit down on the vehicle. I've used them for years and I detail cars. All my cars have been black and when I use my duster I don't get any spider webbing or marks.
Actually it isn't and that has been proven many, many times but sure, keep telling yourself that paint care technology has not advanced whatsoever in like 50 years and the Cali duster is clearly the peak and cannot be improved upon. Honestly the way people talk about them, every sentence is like "well as long as you hover it an inch above and not contact the paint at all, some of the dust will come off from the breeze of moving the duster around!" or "well obviously if you apply more than 2 oz of pressure then you'll get marring, so clearly microfibers are in no way better. These aren't designed to remove ALL dust, just the top .01 micron." Just because you can't see the marks that you are without question leaving, doesn't mean they aren't there. Get out a Scangrip and I assure you, you are in for a treat.
@@adamcoe No where did I say "Cali duster is clearly the peak and cannot be improved upon." Reading comprehension is very important. Now let's see. I am 60 years old. I've been using a car duster since the 90s. Well the results are clear...dusters are not great for paint. I'm throwing mine away and will be showing this to all my clients as well. I'm smart enough to know when you are presented with better ideas to change.
So the duster takes the dirt off the car. Well how does the waterless cleaning not scratch the paint? It's just wetting the dirt and then you rub it all over the surface
actually that's not how waterless cleaning works but thanks for coming out. also even if that were true (it isn't), it still doesn't make the duster a good option.
Waterless wash products use a mixture of detergent and polymers that float up the dirt and cover them with said polymers. They minimise scratches. Nothing you can ever do will completely stop swirl marks unless you have the dough to cover the paint with graphene or something like that.
I have two black cars a '69 GTX and a 73 cuda a blow both the cars off with air then a light duster and I blow the duster out with compressed air I've also done experiments with half the car with a duster the other half with a microfiber towel I'll use anti-static or 3D waterless wash still end up with more swirls with the microfiber towel after 3 months of dusting but they both show show light scratching every 4 months I'll do a slight polish with HD 3D speed it's definitely a labor of love
I was using one until I realized what it was doing after the first use 😳🤦🏾♂️. The street I park my cars on keeps them pretty dusty so I still use it sparingly. But the fun comes in when it’s time to polish again 🤓😎😎
With more than 30 years of owning and using a California Duster (and now a Griot’s) I disagree. When one keeps their car paint always ‘’high beading’’ finish, the duster does remove light surface dust without scratching. If the car’s finish is not protected with a quality wax/polymer then yes, but scaring people away from them altogether is a poor approach.
I use the duster on my garaged car for a couple of days after washing. Any longer than that even a garaged car can pick up too much grime for the duster to be effective without increased pressure, which can mean scratches.
Pulled up to put gas and saw some buff dude with his mustang thinking he's so cool using a duster on his car. I just had to go over and put him on game. Dude literally threw his duster in the trash right then and there. 😎
Kept telling my close friend that has a beautiful ISF That blue that Lexus has , he kept using bead maker on a dirty paint and I told him just do something like ONR don’t use bead maker it’s not enough to take light dust and dirt away well he finally realized after he did an awesome detail months later that he was getting weird scratches back, and now he’s using ONR.

Next best tip: Just leave the paint alone. Be the guy with a dusty, flawless finish than the guy with a clean, scratched finish. Gotta pick your battles.
I thought I was crazy for not touching it unless I washed it... my philosophy is the least you touch the better... I power wash all the dust off then use a blower to dry.. then ceramic enhancer light wipe down ... I have one question before I order these products and get rid of this duster. How well does these products work if you live in a heavy pollen area, because here in MD it is ridiculous.

I only use the car duster when my paint is waxxed and dried. then every week i use an air pressure gun to blow out the dust in the duster. never had any sun swirls that stayed on after i wash my vehicle. you also arent supposed to be too rough with the duster, the dust will come off very easy
No scratches obviously! bc you're using a clean and polished car. I don't see how the duster can cause those circular swirls . I doubt people dust in a circular motion 🙃

Question. But why some other videos show that even the softest microfiber towel makes scratches? Even its new and without dust. Its so weird I don't understand that. Sven the one with the high or medium GSM.
there are plenty of videos showing the cali duster not giving any scratches...and from guys that have show cars. when someone is trying to sell certain products, they will sometimes bash others. if a duster is used for its intended purpose, it will not cause any scratches. you use it very lightly, and not on a dirty car...but only a lightly dusty or a car with some pollen.
i really like the edgeless towels, but for some reason, they do leave a bunch of lint after a couple of washes and ive been washing and drying them as told by The Rag Guys. Also,i have for years used the dusters, but really never saw any scratches from it. maybe its time though to throw them away and stay with what Levi is doing here.
🤦🏾♂️ I was one who lived by it until I cut & buffed the car. The next morning I used the duster & seen the spider web scratches all over the car(black car @ that) & that was my last day using it....
Been cleaning for years....the micro ber towel in the video...are good for motorcycles....small areas...but for big rigs...microfiber towel are no good ..how long is that going to take you...to clean off a huge rig....1 hour..2 hours hands tired....the duster is the best....
the cali duster is only supposed to be used for dusty or getting pollen off...if i were to wipe down my black car every time it got dusty, i'd be doing it 10x per day..nobody can do that...a duster used properly, will not scratch your car...I don't think guys that take their cars to shows, are going to do things to scratch their cars. this is especially true, if your car has been ceramic coated...the duster will in no way scratch your car, if you have a good wax on it or the ceramic.
Dust is different from dirt. A clean car in your garage may get dusty. Using a duster that has never touched a dirty car will not scratch the paint. The duster is a duster, not a dirt remover.
Levi, Good simple easy to understand video on preventing scratches. I've learnt since watching detailing channels over the past 5 years, that you work in straight lines as all towels including microfiber can cause scratches and swirls. But you used circular motions when buffing off in the initial part of the video. I'm now seeing this more frequently in videos, mainly with finishing polishes. My question is doesn't this circular buffing still cause scratches and swirls even using the highest quality towel and with little or no pressure at all? Cheers from Down Under. Ozz
All buffing causes marring on a very small level, and going in straight lines does not prevent this, nor does it make it less visible as some would have you believe. Yes, when swirls get very intense they might be easier to see, but the marring required to demonstrate this is rather extreme. A side by side comparison on a panel with the two would be more believable instead of just saying a duster is bad. Correct use of a duster and proper paint care will yield no scratches. Not saying that spray detailer is better but a duster isn't any worst.
Clay bar, good polishes, then the car duster, buy a new duster if your a nerd. Its a fucking car at the end of the day not a 401K. Summary- use car dusters IF you prepared your finish, replace California car dusters every year. done.

There was no evidence the duster created anymore scratches than a towel would! The upward rolling technique is meaningless! You are rubbing the paint with dust in it either way what possible difference would it make to roll or not roll the towel?
If u know how to use it prop u dont scratch.... its like every tool out there u gotta use it properly.... put it to d test against the towel swipe and i guarantee d towel method along with d detailer spray will mar the paint more than d duster!
@@theragcompany @The Rag Company You say that, but I also fail to see how that brush could cause the circular scratches shown in the panel close up shots; circular scratches like that are cause by a circular motion, not by a brush that is used in a more linear motion. Would have been better to demonstrate/prove how terrible the brush is by using a perfectly corrected test panel and showing before and after shots.

@@Harold_Shand that would have been a really good idea and interesting to see!
hah
I’m sorry not convinced
