  • "Working people with children can't afford a bed. Working people with children get the absolute basics sorted and then can't afford a single frippery. And by frippery I mean a suite when they're out during the summer holidays. What the hell do we do? Where do we take them in the summer holidays? You know, a picnic in the park can only go so far. That kind of thing. People have been tightened and tightened and tightened in terms of what they're able to offer their children. And I'm talking about working people."
    Shelagh Fogarty questions Transport Secretary Mark Harper over various policies that his Party have taken since they got into power in 2010 which may have negatively impacted the UK population - Harper reasons why his Party have done well for people, citing "Eat out to Help out" as one of the schemes that have helped people in hard times.

      @@Godfrey_first_tarnished I disagree, but even if so, they have a plan to increase the percentage of middle class families, rather than put the boot on the neck's of the poor as the tories do. Look at the numbers where a dismal 36% of the UK are middle class, compared to Ireland (69%) and Denmark (80%). Social Democracy works, but apparently fear mongering works just as well.

    After 14 years of Tory mismanagement and cronyism, nothing works. The working and middle classes are poorer. The rich are significantly richer, which goes to show that austerity was a political decision and not an economic one. All public services are on their knees. But Tories deny all responsibility.

    • @ptjogara
      @ptjogara 26 дней назад

      This is so true and if you look at the numbers of other European countries in terms of middle classes - Ireland (69%), Denmark (80%) - compared to UK (39%). It's dismal. At least Labour have a plan to increase the middle class and not just enrich the rich by putting their boot on the neck of the working class.

    I can't even work out how many lies spilled out of his mouth.
    The problems began witn austerity. This was a political decision. Look how quickly those countries which chose to circulate money via infrastructure projects bounced back.
    Further, poverty has been caused by employers refusing to pay living wages. The biggest cruelty committed was to make workers pay other workers' wages. Specifically, make employers richer via universal credit.
    These past 14 years have massively increased the country's debt. Simultaneously the inequality has mushroomed to victorian levels.
    Anyone who still supports the Tories should be ashamed

  • @davehollowell2104

    The majority of benefit claimants are also in work. Forcing people to work even more hours is tantamount to slavery when they are paid your minimum wage.

    • @rayglenister9799
      @rayglenister9799 26 дней назад

      Evidence please. The former Tory Treasurer, Nadhim Zahawi ,was penalized for not declaring income and had to pay some 5 million pounds to the IR. Typically, you go after the workers and not the rich and powerful who cheat the UK out of billions. Evidence. The Panama Papers and 58 billion stashed in British tax free havens.(Bank Suisse). What has forces people to work is this Tory Government and advocates of Brexit. Did you vote to stay in the EU?

    • @rollosinternet1853
      @rollosinternet1853 24 дня назад

      Worse, the Tories are subsidising bad employers to keep salaries low and using our own tax money to help with universal credit. They should force employers to pay a decent salaries instead. Tax gains, not low salaries.

    Sunak's furlough scheme wasn't "leading the way", as the Covid furlough scheme was very similar to other country's *normal* furlough scheme. In Norway, if your employer doesn't need you for the next 4 months (eg you work in a tea shop in a coastal tourist spot) you get paid 60% of your wages for those 4 months. This is normal, not exceptional, in countries that put people ahead of party.

How about describing the reality of reducing child poverty, enough nutritious food, a warm bed, books and parents that are actualy there to read them a bedtime story, rather than working an 80 hour week, and not there, or are just too tired and stressed to do so. Poverty is traumatising. But as Tories MPs know the poor are not their voters, so why help them thrive?
