  • A quick video to look at a relatively small game in terms of memory, Crazy Comets. A good use of character based effects, thumping music, loud sound effects, and sprites whizzing around that makes for a very enjoyable blaster.

The sound routine for this game was given as the source code, so it could been slightly modified, I never asked Simon if he did change anything, but he wanted it reallocated. Normally Rob would ask for the memory where you need, and would supply the binary data set, with entry points for calls to the player.

Many thanks ! digging into the starfield is really interesting ! I guess the approach is similar in Mega Apocalypse, but way more impressive compared to crazy comets. Any chance you dig into it and possibly figure out how the whole code of the starfield is working ? anyway thanks a lot ! Had never thought about simulating a starfield effect using a single char as a star, and then refine the effect by modifying the chars shape to have 2 pixels stars. That's really smart.

I'll be looking at that one next. The stars are very different.

Ah, such a classic. Would have loved to hear some more thoughts on how the stars swirl (lookup tables?), and how those character based explosions are done (drawing into chars?). Interesting how the star swirl plays nicely with the high score tables , etc, in the foreground. Mega Apocalypse next?!

Did you ever play the sequel to Crazy Comets, Mega Apocalypse? Crazy Comets on steroids.
