  • The story of Todd Christensen, the forgotten or nearly forgotten tight end
When talking about tight ends in the 1980s, most people remember Kellen Winslow, who earned All-Pro honors five times, made five Pro Bowl appearances, led the league in receptions twice, and achieved over 1,000 receiving yards for three consecutive seasons. He was also elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
However, the Raiders also had a notable tight end in the '80s, perhaps even better than Winslow. This player was Todd Christensen. Todd and Winslow had almost identical resumes, with the only difference being that Winslow stood out as a tight end in the 1980s, while Todd won two Super Bowl rings.

Well, if he belongs in there, so does fellow TE Russ Francis, who played longer for the Patriots (twice), and 49ers, for 4-5 seasons, and won Super Bowl XIX. His career receiving yards aren't that far behind Christiansen's and ironically, he couldve accumulated more stats if he hadn't originally decided to retire prematurely after the 1980 season due to NE's ownership not paying him his promised bonus, plus the nagging, PTSD memories of Stingley's paralysis injury at Oakland in a August 1978 preseason game.

Ive never forgotten Todd Christiensen, One of the best Raiders ever, A converted running back who didn't make it with two teams (Dallas, NY Giants) and the Raiders convinced him to play tight and and all he did was catch everything that came his way and held a tight end record for receptions with 95 for 9 years, Christiensen had an amazing ability to get open, I remember how Merlin Olsen on telecasts used to talk about Christiensen finding a dead spot in the opponent's defense and Plunkett or Wilson would find him. Todd Christensen was a terrific player.

When I started watching the NFL in 1983 I tried to cheer for any team who played the Raiders. Then #46 got my attention. What a player, to me he was unassuming but you knew he would make a difference. Now, the Raiders have been my team for a lot of years now and all because of Todd Christiansen. There were other players who made a difference but #46 was the player I gravitated to. He should be in The Hall. Simple as that.

Raider fan since Daryl Lamonica & Billy Cannon days - Todd Christensen is one of my all-time favorite Raider. i would just like to take the time to thank you for showing the present raiders fans when and who made the true raiders mystique which is now called the raider nation. i have been a raiders fan since childhood when this franchise came into existence in 1960 and i lived just across from san leandro blvd from where the coliseum would be built just under a mile away. PRIDE AND POISE. COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE, PRO FOOTBALLS WINNINGEST TEAM, AND NOW JUST WIN BABY. these were not just slogans but a way of life and playing the game of football for the raiders players of that time. todd was only an oakland raider for a short time but became very successful in L.A. i agree this man should be in the HOF. it took KEN STABLER to pass away to get in the HOF. what a shame. it is true that the NFL has it out for the raiders to this very day. it is almost proven in every game that they play. i will be a raiders fan till the day i die. BORN IN OAKLAND AND WILL BE BURIED IN OAKLAND. i would just like to end with this. LAS VEGAS may have the team now, but AL DAVIS rests in peace in OAKLAND. go raiders.

I'll never forget Todd Christensen (and I'm sure there are thousands just like me) and I'm not even a Raider fan. Christensen was a real good ball player, a shining personality, and a very good announcer. In my opinion, Brock Huard sounds so much like him when he announces a game (his vocal tone, not his dialogue), that I sometimes think it's actually Todd himself, although my rational mind quickly brings me back to reality knowing that unfortunately, Todd is no longer with us.

He suffers the same treatment that players like Cliff Branch, Jim Plunkett suffered…. The fact that he was a Raider hurts him and moreover the fact that he was a refurbished Fullback forced to convert to Tight End doesn’t help his legacy? But like someone said…. Todd Christiansen’s resume and legacy is on the grass … that right there speaks for itself…..He stacks up favorably compared to Kellen Winslow in addition to the Super Bowls .. which Kellen has a big 🍩 .. and yet he’s in the HOF…. Politics at its worst…. Just Saying……….. Appreciate the video. RIP # 46. 🙏

When the Colts exited Baltimore in 1983, left without a hometown football team, I became n LA Raiders fan, primarily because the Raiders beat the Redskins in the Super Bowl. Baltimore fans resented being force fed SKins games on local telecasts. Christensen became my favorite TE and naturally Marcus Allen my favorite running back, though I loved Bo Jackson. Christensen was a great TE. I’d hear his name called over and over again making catches as I watched late east coast Raiders games with Merlin Olson and Dick Enberg doing the play by play for NBC. Good times.

Todd Christensen was a great player and deserves to be in the Hall of Fame! But Kellen Winslow Sr. was just otherworldly. He had always been great! He was great in High School and College where he was a first team ALL-AMERICA at University of Missouri. He was a first round draft pick at #13 to the San Diego Chargers and a starter from the beginning. He was first team ALL-PRO 3x and 2nd team 2x with 5 Pro Bowls. He was a basically a big wide receiver playing TE. And he was dominant! If you ever watched him there were games where it seemed like he was the best player on the field. He could take a pass from across the middle and hit his head on the goal posts from 80 yards. Did I mention he is both the College and Pro Football Hall of Fames with both jerseys retired! He was just outstanding. The first true pass catching tight end I remember the Monday night game against the Miami Dolphins in 1982 probably the greatest game ever and he was legendary. He never won a Super Bowl but he was so great along with a tragic injury that really cut short a truly legendary career. There's no telling where his numbers would be if not for that horrendous knee injury. Yes, Todd Christensen is long overdue for the Hall but personally, I think Kellen Winslow Sr. was a teir above! Kellen Winslow is on both the NFL'S 75th and 100th Anniversary teams! And the 1980's All-Decade team! R.I.P. Todd Christensen.

Met him once (when he dropped in our church unexpectedly). He was polite and unassuming - even when I got star struck (and I was in my 40s). I didn't recognize him at first (who expects to meet him at church in Lakeport, Ca?). When I noticed he was a visitor I went up and said hello and introduced myself. He shook my hand in a very friendly fashion and said his name. It was only then I recognized him and said something kind of dumb ("Like number 46 has been good to me Todd Christensen?"). Seemd like a very nice down to earth man.

Their accolades are identical. Both have 5 pro bowls, both led the league in receptions twice (Todd with the higher numbers), both had 3 1000 yard seasons. Todd picked up two super-bowl rings. The Raiders had better running backs than the Chargers so Todd’s play was not as pronounced but he was still a major contributor as he lead the all receivers including the wide receivers. He should be in the Hall of Fame 100%. His numbers are better than Raider hall of fame Dave Casper.

Raiders fan of 48 years. I'm going to say no to #46 being better than #80. Just by stats alone. Winslow played in 28 less games and had 80 more receptions and 869 more yards than Todd Christensen. You should never hang your hat on one game when evaluating two great players, but what Winslow did in Miami in that playoff game called "Epic in Miami" was unbelievable. That game was 4 hours long in the scorching heat. He could barely walk at the end of the overtime (13 catches w/ 166 yards and a blocked FG). I watched that game. I'm sorry, but #46 couldn't have done that, imo. Winslow was just built different, but Christensen represented the logo on the side of our helmets with honor like a warrior! Great work teaching the younger Raider Nation about our past. If you're young and newer to football go back and watch "Epic in Miami". Top ten game I've ever watched for me. Just two heavyweights slugging it out. I believe the Dolphins had that "Killer B's" defense, it was a nasty D. ( I've watched 1,000's of games and my memory isn't what it was, lol ).
Side note: In 48 years I've never been more excited about the next Autumn Wind!
    JUST WIN, BABY
