Back in the mid 70s my dad would take me up to Jones lake to fish .
There used to be a fishing lodge up there ,5 little cabins you could rent for 10 bucks a night ,boat rental and a general store .
Fishing was fantastic nice rainbow and kokanee .
The road was very nasty back then ,coming down you were mostly in 4l low walking down.
Braking would usually result in smoke lol.
I haven't been up there this year but the place has sure changed since the good old days
Thank you for sharing, Chris. Time's flying for sure.
Same here. I grew up in Hope.
Yup he's right it was a cool little setup and the road is way way better than those days
Thanks for sharing.
This will be very helpful for my plans on visiting that place 👌
Cheers !🍻
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this. Do you think my golf gti could make it through
Greetings! Not sure how low your GTI is, but regular clearance (think a typical sedan or coupe) should be ok (unless a deep cross ditch develops on the road, which happens), though good tires are a must. I'd say minimum 6 plies and with plenty of tread left. Of course, have a spare and a compressor. Getting a tow truck up there would cost dearly :)
Hey! Thanks for the video! I am wondering if you think a 2019 Subaru Forester with stock tires would be able to make the drive, at least until the washout at 11.5km? Would really appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!
Hi! You are welcome. We have not gone to the washout since 2020, so don't know the current conditions past the split at the 7.5 km, where Jones Lake West FSR begins. That said, even 2WD vehicle with regular clearance should make it to the split (and further to the BC Hydro Campground 1.2 km down Jones Lake West FSR), as there no major surface issues, other than the usual FSR roughness. The only caveat - have good tires, as the road is full of numerous small sharp stones.
Thanks! One more follow up question... What does "good" tires mean? Could all seasons (M+S) be considered good? And would there be a minimum tread necessary (based on your personal experience)? Thanks again!
M+S is not necessary, but a 10-ply off-road-oriented tire, as opposed to a 6-ply run-of-the-mill tire, would certainly be better. That said, it's not like the road is full of nails, just small sharp stones. So, you would probably be ok with regular street tires with a good tread (i.e. not bald or getting there), but do carry a spare.
Okay thanks so much I really appreciate it! Super helpful 🙏😊
Oh one more question! What are your thoughts on deflating tires a bit when you go on FSR?
When did you take this clip? Can car with 4x4 wheel but low clearance make it to get to the lake next week?
Good day. That was last Friday. If you have regular clearance you should be ok at least to this split, and then the road on the right takes you to BC Hydro Campground in 1.2 km via a decent road. We have not gone to the left of the split this time, but, chances are, you can drive to the lake via that route as well (there is some nice lakeside unregulated camping that way).
