    Thank you! This is very informative. Some family friends were talking last night about how they didn't get any takers on a set of silverware in their estate sale. It got me thinking that I should get educated on it. But a quick search shows that there are plenty of silver folks already on the lookout. Still great information in case I come across some 5 gal buckets full...

    Note: The 300 series non-magnetic stainless steel is called Austenetic SS. Coin Silver [Ag] is 90% Silver and Sterling Silver is 92.5% [ Note: Queen Victoria was concerned that pure silver wore out and she wanted England's coins to be as high in alloy as possible. Jeseph Sterling a metallurgist, like myself, came up with the 92.5 % Ag and Copper, Zinc, Nickel for the remainder. She Knighted him Sir Joseph Sterling]. Also, there are 4 groups of Stainless Steels and the one you mentioned was most likely Precipitation Hardening (PH) typically, for example 17-7 PH 17% Chromium 7 % Nickel which are very expensive and we used them to make missile wings because at Hypersonic speeds *Mach 5+, they would heat up to over 1,000 degrees F from air friction within seconds. The 400 Series are what are used for expensive Chicago Cutlery which used 410 Martinsitic SS which can be sharpened to razor sharpness. Non-magnetic is Face Center Cubic FCC Crystalline Pattern and Body-Centered-Cubic BCC is magnetic like most all steels and Iron, FCC is a cube with a dice-pattern of 5 atoms on each face and BCC is magnetic with an Iron, Fe atom at each corner, dice pattern of 4 on each face, but one in the center of the cube which creates a North-South Pole and makes it magnetic ! There is much more but I spent 4 yrs. getting a metallugical Engineering Degree at Ohio State & Arizona State Universities and there is much more !

    My sterling silver flatware is not tarnished because I use it everyday! Most people call ALL flatware, silverware, which is wrong. Everyday flatware is stainless. I learned a long time ago from the elders in my family, that by using your SILVERWARE, hand wash it after use, dry it and put it away you will hardly ever need to poslish it.

    I took 4 sterling spoons and made 4 arrow heads (applied them to bamboo from my backyard and some wild feathers found) and sold them for $35 each.....then turned the handles into old school spoon rings that sold for $15 each. Sooooo....$200 for what was going to be maybe $25 in scrap silver on a very good day....

    • @JohnCKovach
      @JohnCKovach 7 лет назад +1

      You didn't realize that there were over 3 ounces of silver in each spoon? Sterling being 92.5% Silver yielding 3 oz. @ $28 per oz. =$84 of silver that you sold for $15 each. It was like selling a Hundred Dollar Bill for $48. Do your homework ! Or go to Replacements.com which has thousand of Sterling Silver pieces that people are missing and they will buy your pattern of silverware.

    • @pacoblancosmith
      @pacoblancosmith 7 лет назад +3

      John Cornel Kovach do your own homework....and math. I sold 2 items from each spoon @$50 net. That's $200 compared to your silver price. Not sure where you're selling your silver at that price as it hasn't been that high since 2013.

    if there are 150 or so of each s/k/f you could rent them for weddings / events, or sell directly to a catering company. when I have had stuff in volume like silverware, I found that I could get the most out of it by donating it for the tax deduction. most shelters are wanting these kind of things so they are not reliant on single use items.

      Hello Moose, German Silver is stamped 700 which is 70% Ag which is still precious metal. The Germans like to make giant spoons, so it makes sense that they would be costly, but would last longer with those giant 300 lb. Frauleins cooking a 5 gallon stew. Silver may be going up over $50 per oz ! Also, there is a website, Replacements.com that will buy missing sterling along with the thousands of patterns [usually $48-$98 per piece]. Also, what your are doing to remove silver plating is called anodizing since the silver is attached to the (+) anode electrode. Adding plating the reverse is done with the Cathode (-) connected to the plated piece and the silver bar to the anode (+) in acid. Good Luck Moose ! John Cornel Kovach on FB P.S. One other good thing that happened in 2016 was that on Trump's win, my miserably small 401(k) retirement account what was left of it after a divorce, went up $12,000 in one day after the election which saved me and my young daughter!

    Hi there is one more important thing about silver knife handles. Most of them when taking apart are not solelit they are filled with some kind of epoxi the actual silver contend is in

    • @csachevauxsansabri2612
      @csachevauxsansabri2612 8 лет назад

      oops wrong button I meant to say is in comparison to the weight minimal it is almost not worth it taking them apart. however if you have 999 or 800 or 850 or 870 silverware, sell it on eBay. I once sold a silverware set of 800 silver for $2500 US. There is a big market out there for antique silverware. $100 for your 3set seams very low to me because it would have costed more then that to buy it in the first place. You have to see it this way. Gold and silver dose not loos it's value.
      In the contrary, it gans it. Multiply beginning price by 10 and you are about at the market price today. For example, your set cost $50 in the 40s. X10 $400 would be the selling price today. As simple as that.

      @@moosescrapper5928 One thing that I've learned in those years of detecting, nothing is ever cleaned out. Easy pick silver, We got most of that in the early 80's.
      One way you can prove the never cleaned out theory.
      Go to your favorite hunting grounds and use some popsicle sticks and twine.
      Square off say a 20 foot square chunk of earth and then attack it!
      Scan it from this angle, then turn a few degrees and go back across. Keep doing that until your spouse reports you missing ( lol ) and dig those little clicks, hisses and pops.
      You'll see. Best of luck in the future.

    I see 16 thumbs down but I like what you're doing. I have vintage kitchenware and while I'm okay on silverware at the moment, I'm looking for both ceramic dishes and steel pots and pans to match my existing cookware. I'm sure that many people are doing this, and will pay a premium for exact matches. In particular I'm looking for a 10 or 12" covered Revereware skillet, which will set me back $50 unless I can find one somewhere. Kitchenware lasts forever and as far as I'm concerned retains its usefulness for 100 years or more if well taken care of.
