No, you don't always have to turn it off. You may want auto-split to get certain effects with a satin fill area. At some point a wide satin stitch will be TOO wide and could cause problems.

What Pull Compensation do you use in Hatch settings for hats lettering?
Usually 0.25mm. That usually works fine for me. If the lettering is thicker maybe I'll keep it at default 0.2mm though.
