In regards to the perfectly placed cage, Catherine wrote that. It's been implied several times that Catherine has a natural intuition for the Art, like re-writing Tay to make it habitable or the design for the crystal book-window coming to her in a dream. I can't think of examples but I remember Atrus turning to her for help when some of the trickier writing needed to be done. I found it plausible that she would have more success than Atrus' clumsy Stoneship attempt.
I see that in the intervening years, Atrus and Catherine have not gotten any better at describing ages with, you know... handrails? They are the epitome of "No OSHA Compliance".
Not only are the bars electric, but both Haven's and Spire's "glass" cases for the linking books to Tomahna are entirely intact despite the desbris that litters the ground and must have eeing flying around at high velocity evrywhere during the destruction of the cages. I find it hard to believe that the glass cases weren't hit, so since they didn't hatter I am of the opinion that they aren't made of glass at all, but a different, much sturdier transparent material.
It seems perfectly logical to me that they would use the bucket to pass along stuff. Sirrus is a psycho after all. Who knows what he could do when he managed to grab an arm while something is passed on through the gate. Just my two cents.
His attempt to use a stick to link through the book would depend on how far away from the book you're allowed to be (even though you're technically touching it) and still link. Also, you should consider that if he is 10 feet away from the book when he links out, then he should end up being 10 feet away from the spawning point on the other side, which would end up leaving him embedded in the wall.
And maybe it's to do with physics. I mean, I can imagine a much smaller sheet of glass being sturdier than a huge, screen-sized plane of the stuff. Another reason why the glass may be undamaged from the explosion is due to the nature of the 'crystal bombs' which seem to break down stone and metal with ease but have no apparent effect on the molecular structure of the glass.
I know this might sound crazy, but the other games suggest that the two sons have been responsible for such evil, I still find it strange that Atrus could consider setting either of them free. Especially what the original myst game implies about these two.
I know this comment is really old, but I'll reply anyway...that doesn't sound crazy at all. In fact, trying to redeem the brothers is what's crazy. I wish the concept for the game was something entirely different, like helping Atrus restore the D'ni or something. The story could've still had the brothers escaping, just not the whole redemption thing. I don't know, maybe this game will prove me wrong after all.
@@KateBond642 thanks for the reply. I appreciate your comment I love myst, but it sure does have a kind of dark side to it.. have you seen the game called obducted? Its made by the creators of myst, and it has a different theme to it. Happy new year too!
@@KateBond642 sorry, I tried to send a reply but I think it went wrong. Myst I love but it does have this kind of shadowy side to it. Have you seen the game called obducted? its made by the creators of myst and also LP'd by Dilandu 3000 Its a myst style game but the theme it different. I really enjoyed it.
@crochetgrl The books Atrus burned must've been regular linking books, not the descriptive books. Atrus's Spire and Haven journals here also suggest that, as it mentions him writing additional linking books for the prison ages.
Furthermore, the fact that the Stranger could link back from Voltaic (real name "Ilaïsets"?), Amateria, and Edanna in Myst III meant that the Descriptive Book for J'nanin was still in its place of protection on Myst.
@areoborg He couldn't use a stick to link, since you have to touch it directly with your own flesh (it won't even work through clothes, apparently). My point was he could use a stick to break the case and retrieve the book. It'd easily fit through the bars so if he can get a hold of the book, he can get it out of the cage.
This time through this Myst LP series I decided to skip Myst III and so a particular thing popped out at me. (Riven semi-spoiler warning?) Remember in Riven how things were any time you linked anywhere? And here you are, hanging out in prison worlds. I think maybe Atrus owes us by now. I think maybe he should have to take us on adventures in interesting Ages that don't have madmen in them and aren't prisons! Something, at least! Sheesh. On the other hand, awful things happen to us around him, so maybe that's not the best thing to ask for.
I like to think Atrus' own explorations are chock full of stumbling into cages and prisons and madmen, and he just sort of downplays it in his journals because he's too busy being all like "ooh look at the pretty musical lights that rekindle my weary soul to do BOOK SCIENCE ART! It reminds me of Catherine, and gives me an idea for a new, more complex door mechanism for my new project", or something along those lines. More to the point, his description of his time in Channelwood DOES involve a madman, and surely his work in Mechanical involved prison-type fortifications, so.
The hatchet was for bigger things like the plant that Sirrus gave to his mother. The plant she put in the incubator that was half dead. But then it started to bloom.
Possibly to keep the electricity to serve as an overall deterrent, as I suspect the transparent material doesn't conduct very well. But now I'm just throwing a hypothesis on top of a hypothesis.
Well neither saliva nor mucous are living in and of themselves, because they're just enzymatic excretions, and not cells. Saliva may contain cells from the interior of the mouth however, that have just rubbed off on the tongue. I think the best way to get a living cell on there would be if he had just cut himself while working on 234 and he touched the cut with his glove. Red blood cells would work really well for what we need.
Yeah, that would be the plot hole there. The Book of Atrus makes it clear that a link must be initiated by living cells touching the panel. Even if it's a recently dead body, it the skin cells in the hand are still alive, it'll work.
@williamcardno IIRC, he took his glove off during the cutscene in which you were viewing him through the linking panel. ... Then again, according to the retcon, he was never even captured that way (but presumably with prison age as opposed to a trap book)
If Sirrus did indeed explode the entrance of the Linking Chamber, then there would have been the risk of destroying the Tomahna linking book in the process. If this had happened, then Sirrus would have been well and truly screwed.
Well, the linking chamber was "written" in the ages, and as we know it's not like anything you write is going to come out exactly as you imagine it. Still, it's strange that Atrus would have let those very obvious security flaws slip out of his scrutiny. Even if escape was still impossible, either brother could have very well killed him even behind the ostensible protection of those bars (Sirrus had his bombs, Achenar his crossbows).
I think if it were just normal glass, the case would not be in that good condition after the explosion and I dont know about dni having safety glass but its not that unlikely right? The exchange-basket: If Yeesha would be my doughter, I would tell her to use it because of the possibility that someone could reach out for her hand. Forcing her to get the book. If the glass from the case could be broken with a stick, I dont think a glasswall next to the metal bars would make that much difference.
I know. I'm one of those people that will bend over backwards twice to try and tie up anything that looks like a plothole just so I can say everything makes sense, but I can't let this one slide. It is, however, possible that the D'ni invented a fabric which conducted whatever lifeforce it is that the books detect. If so, Gehn may've fabricated some in Riven and made gloves with it, so the interior lining of the gloves and the exterior conducted the life of his hands to the outside?? Maybe?
Just wondering, how exactly could Sirrus have been captured? If the age was written so that linking into it put you outside the cage, then surely the only feasible way to get him into the cage would be too have physically forced him or subdued him in some manner, pushed him into the cage, then rewritten the age to add the gate (or physically welded it in place), no?
So, just thought of something. Atrus burned the original linking books to Haven and Spire. He would have no way of getting there, unless it's possible to write a second descriptive book to a lost age? In which case, Exile was a waste of time...

Also - How the hell did he know where the Crystal Viewer would look at? I mean, I love it as a scheme by Sirrus, but it just doesn't make sense holistically. Almost like the writer didn't think that through...
Well, how about saliva or mucus? I don't mean to sound gross, but aren't they living? I'm not a biologist so I have no clue, but if those things are indeed classified as 'living tissue' temporarily after leaving the body, then it's quite possible he wiped the palm side of his gloves on his nose or mouth prior to coming through the door into the study.
yeah, but genetic material such as skin cells on the outside of gloves isn't unusual. They can still remain alive temporarily after rubbing off on an object, right?
Yeah, but epidermal skin cells are already dead. Unless he seriously scraped himself on the gloves in the last couple minutes, there shouldn't be any live cells.
I liked your playthrough of Riven more than Myst 3 and this series. You spent more than half the video in the cage talking and commenting. it’s so beautiful!!!! my personal fav is the menu music of the game (specifically the fast part w the cool vocals, it’s in 7/4 time and it’s so fun!)
Mine too. It's one of the most gorgeous pieces in the history of Western music.
