    Good stuff man! It's so hard to teach a newbie how to walk the cup. We basically learned by watching, and if you lucky enough to be with a good off company that doesn't feel the cost of new tungsten and ceramic cups. 👌

    • @JonathanElsea
      @JonathanElsea 2 года назад

      I remember one of my demos for walking the cup was with a 5 gallon bucket lol, it worked for the purpose of demonstrating the mechanics.
      You don't learn from the watching, you learn by mimicking what you watched.
      I would argue that watching + Hood-time is the one and only (REAL) way to learn, Learned by watching is the Way it has always been done, and likely the (best) way that learning will always be done.

    The method that I taught many helpers was to use a # 10 cup and a dinner plate. I would demonstrate holding the cup in between my thumb, index, and middle finger and walk the cup over e plate, especially up the lip. When the helper could do this easily without slipping, he would be ready for the tig lesson with a hood.

    Even tho this is pretty cool with how this tig set up shows you how to practice on paper (as tho you were doing flush or perhaps cap pass), it wouldn't teach you the different techniques of how to walk that cup from root to hot pass all the way out to the cap. Most welders know that different passes call for different cup sizes along with different cup walking techniques. How would that paper (for example) show you how to walk that cup on the root pass? Probably the hardest/toughest past to make correctly?

    • @kf8575
      @kf8575 2 года назад +1

      Dont need to use different sized ceramics for different passes lol
      Just a number 6 or number 8 will do. Freehand the root and hot pass and fill passes, then walk it when capping it off👍

    • @michaelivey7517
      @michaelivey7517 2 года назад

      @@kf8575 Free handing the root, hot pass, and fill passes good. Tig finger a must for that though for me. That pipe gets pretty hot when you're trying to stabilize your torch for free handing. I've tried that before and it can work pretty good although free handing takes some pretty good practice to. I still prefer to walk the cup on all my passes. I'm lazy. heh heh! 😂😁
