Het was een gelegenheidswerk, dat onder grote tijdsdruk en moeilijke privéomstandigheden werd geschreven. Niettemin is de muziek van zeer hoge kwaliteit en biedt La clemenza di Tito inhoudelijk erg interessante elementen.
