    This movie was what introduced me to the story when I was about 12/13, so it'll always have a special place in my heart. I've since read the book, watched recordings of the stage version etc. and I know there's a lot of differences each time but no matter what anyone says - I adore this movie and I'll never not love it! If haters interpret that to mean I'm stupid then fine, but I love it!

      I feel the same way. I was a lot older than you but the movie had a similar impact on me. I only saw the Broadway production 14 years later, and I much prefer the movie version. The three leads in the film were perfect.

    Him being given the ring back and hearing the distant echo of Christine's singing as she exits the cave and a tear rolls down his cheek is one of the most powerfully cinematic moments I have ever seen. It's in that moment that he realises that she is in fact the true Phantom of the Opera - in that he will never be able to hold her again or hear her sing another sheet of his music. The most vital piece of his music and life is truly gone and he is condemned to spend the rest of his life contending with that heartbreak. Such a powerful moment.

    He was the best choice for the role, absolutely! Hot, talented, mysterious!!!

    Actually Christine did fall in love with the Phantom, but the love of her life was Raoul, and nothing could change that. She both loved and feared The Phantom.

    I know that guy that is interviewing Gerry. He is here in Texas on channel 8. he is the movie critic. That was so cool. Gerry is awesome. You gotta love him!!!!!

    We'el, JNX, I canna' agree wi' yer thinkin'! But you are entitled to your opinion! I "discovered" Phantom last January on HBO On Demand and have watched it about 150 times ever since then. Gerry is by far the BEST Phantom ever. He wasn't cast to be a lyric tenor--Patrick Wilson had that role--and he was AMAZING! What a voice! Gerry had the grit and the panache to be a GREAT Phantom! I think he's just wonderful and I think Joel and Andrew made a VERY wise choice in him!

    I've never seen the Broadway production, but I heard the recording where Crawford sang. What a voice! - no one can dispute that. But Butler is more than a pretty boy. He is very good as an actor; his pain is believable, his madness is scary, his obsession is right there. I completely understand Crawford fans: when something's been done and done so well and gained so many admirerers, it seems impossible to even think of changing that something a little bit.

    After I saw the movie, I bought the DVD as soon as it was released. Last year I finally saw the show with John Cudia, who I believe is not a tenor but has the range to hit those high notes. His voice literally shook the theater. However, that doesn't take awaything away from the movie which I loved. I really wasn't critisizing Gerard Butler, I loved him, he brought tears to my eyes and he does have a very good voice, it is just that he doesn't have the range of a show singer.

    *continued*
    And here fantastic Crawford has been replaced with Butler. I think that fans revolted even before they heard and saw Butler in the role; the idea itself was unacceptable to them, and this prejudice played its role. And maybe Butler isn't a classically trained singer, but he pulls it off. It's only the real music fans who know in-depth what the range, volume, D-flat octave, etc mean, who can tell that he can't sing well. To me and millions of ordinary people he is awesome.

    Gerry is a fantistic actor. The intensity and pathos he brings to the phantom truly grips your heart. He is also the most handsome and sexy guy I've ever seen. However, he simply doesn't have the singing range for part. It is really written for a tenor. Perhaps the movie would have been better if his singing voice had beeb dubbed.

  • @suzee2
    @suzee2 18 лет назад +2

    Dear Ima: Seems to me Andrew Lloyd Webber, CREATOR of Phantom, would be capable of choosing the right man for the movie Phantom! Fairly presumptuous to think you'd know more than the guy who WROTE the opera! MC may have been the original, but never the best. . . (BTW, stage drama vs. movie = 2 entirely different acting requirements.) I believe ALW had the right idea--enhancing HIS story with a younger, more handsome Phantom to make the love triangle more believable!

  • @Shanioke
    @Shanioke 17 лет назад

    I agree with you. Especially because I had that problem until I was about 16. It's really friggin annoying when people can't seem to grasp how to say your name.

  • @some1tookmynick
    @some1tookmynick 17 лет назад +1

    *more*
    When it comes to the presence, I think here Crawford fans are just being spiteful. Butler's presence is mesmerizing! I couldn't take my eyes off him, and it's not even because he's goodlooking, since because of the mask one couldn't see the face properly. No, he does have a presence and he's very good for the role, far better than Travolta could have been, and although I like Banderas very much, I don't think he could be quite as sophisticated as Butler.

  • @DGokeys1fan
    @DGokeys1fan 12 лет назад +1

    1. ALW said he didn't want Michael to do it because then people would have expectations to see the movie. 2. If he couldn't sing, whyd he get the part? He's amazing

  • @some1tookmynick
    @some1tookmynick 17 лет назад +1

    *final part, he-he*
    So really this heated discussion is just caused by the frustration of unfulfilled expectations. Crawford fans wanted to see and hear what they were used to, but got something different instead. Doesn't mean that different is bad. Simply not what you like, that is all.

    This is the most sophisticated interview I have seen Mr. Butler do. Mostly, he's either hitting on the female interviewers or he's talking crudely constantly - so this is refreshing. However, I do not care at all for the movie version that he did - but he did do his best, given the fact one of history's worst directors took control of this film. (Aka Joel Schumacher)

    There is almost a sculpture of him. You have to check the tail end of Monica Vizeu's video she calls "Tha Gra Agam Ort." He is absolutely a Greek god in that picture. You'll see.

    Well i dont know where your going but its obviously a rough area of scotland. And i do believe you. Im just saying your making a big stereotype for Scotland and thats not fair.Theres rough areas in every country. Gerard for instance is from Glasgow, which is known for its rough tounge but for instance in Edinburgh there very very clear. So it just depends on where you are in the country and what person your talking to.

    Firstly, Dougray Scott was in "Ever After" with Drew Barrymoore, "Dark Water" with Jennifer Connoly, "Arabian Nights", amoung others. And secondly, Nicol Williamson IS a man, if you actually did your homework and looked online. He is a famous Shakespearean actor, but he's also known for doing films. Some of his modern work, that you may recognize are "Spawn" (1997), "The Seven-Per-Cent Solution", "The Wind in the Willows", amoung others. Next time, do your research before you make a remark.

    He is sooooo handsome and sexy. Too bad he can't sing. Not that he can't sing just that he doesn't have a show voice. But as he said, they were concentrating more on the story rather the music. However----the music is so incredible it was unfortunate that both he and Raoul could not do the music justice. Emmy, of course had the right kind of voice for the music.

    Just because your Scottish doesn't mean you have to speak crudely or in a rough manner. And not doing so, doesn't mean someone a snob.

    Why did I get voted down 6 times? Its true that Gerard Butler is a tremendous flirt and he himself said he does it. And let's be honest, he does talk crudely sometimes and swears often.

  • @EmilyGloeggler7984
    @EmilyGloeggler7984 15 лет назад

    I'm actually part Scottish - if you must know. Most of the men, including my grandfather, on that side of my family come from hard-working, blue-collar stock. But, my grandfather has never spoken crudely to a single soul in all his life and is generally very respective of others. He is blunt, but never crass. The bottom line is that basically, not all Scotsmen act the way that Gerard and Billy do. End point. I'm sorry you feel the need to insult me to try to prove your arguement.

  • @EmilyGloeggler7984
    @EmilyGloeggler7984 15 лет назад

    Actually, that's not true. I have never heard Dougray Scott say a crass word? (And he's Gerard's age) As well as the great Scottish actor, Nicol Williamson (famous for "Exacalibar" and "Return to Oz").

  • @EmilyGloeggler7984
    @EmilyGloeggler7984 15 лет назад

    I'm sorry that you want to insult me, when I have never insulted you. Anyway, I already said that Gerard Butler and Bill Connelly were not brought up in Hollywood glitz, although RUclips has not posted the comment. For some strange reason. The point is that yes, both they and Dougray Scott didn't grow up in the Hollywood spotlight (whereas Nicol didn't) - but I hardly see the point of that arguement.
