- What is YOUR GREATEST WEAKNESS? SAMPLE ANSWERS and How to Answer Your Biggest Weakness Interview Question. Greatest weaknesses question is bound to be asked at some point during your interview. Many find this question pointless and it is for sure THE MOST DISLIKED job interview question. It’s completely understandable that no candidate would want to confess their biggest flaws during the interview. Recruiters and hiring managers are aware of it. But the way you reply to What Are Your Weaknesses question already gives a lot of information about you. That’s why this question doesn’t go away. Companies keep asking “What are your greatest weaknesses” and the vast majority of job seekers are NOT approaching this question correctly.
Almost everyone needs help with the “weaknesses question” so in this video I will show you how to structure your “What Is Your Greatest Weakness?” response with a few easy steps. “What are your greatest weaknesses or your biggest weaknesses?” Can be asked in many different ways:
-What are your most important development areas?
- What would your manager or colleagues describe as your biggest weakness if I speak to them?
- Which tasks or duties do you struggle with the most?
- Is there a skill set of yours which you feel still needs work?
- Tell me about a development goal that you have set.
- If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Examples of weaknesses are definitely the least favorite, but necessary question in an interview.
The general reaction to this question is a big fear, since it feels like someone is setting up a trap. But the reality is that a decent answer to this question immediately increases the chances of getting hired!

Thanks for this video Marat. I have always had trouble figuring out how to answer this question properly because I thought weaknesses was a personality trait and a strength in disguise. But you have said that it is not so this helps me to shift my focus to think of examples. The ones you mentioned help a lot to think about situations to frame my answer properly.

No sane person will ever disclose a real weakness in an interview, that is why I believe there is no point asking it
Agree. They're basically asking to tell why are you a bad fit for this position. They expect you expose your biggest weakness related to this job not your overall weakness so they want you to say bad things about yourself which is initially stupid and nobody will do that

This was really good, I agree
Whenever I am interviewing a candidate, I always ask this question. What I am really looking for is whether the candidate's flaws are deal breakers that will impede the candidate's possibility to be a valuable addition to my department and company. At the same time I am definitely interested in what steps the candidate is taking to work on his flaws. This gives me valuable insight into the candidate's resilience and response to challenges. Above all, I am interested if the candidate is honest! I have a zero tolerance policy to any dishonesty in my subordinates and if the candidate is dishonest during the interview, I know there is no reason to continue with the hiring process. Thank you for a valuable video.
That is completely understandable. Job interviews in general is a process where each candidate and the company present themselves in the best way. However the whole process should be genuine and I think the candidates who tend to "oversell" themselves would try to avoid or not give an honest answer to the "Weaknesses" question.

Talking about my flaws used to make me feel ashamed of my mistakes and guilty about my inadequacies, so this question was a turning point in every interview. My attitude became, 'I'm a screw-up, I don't deserve this interview, and I'm wasting this person's time,' so I hoped for the chance to answer other questions before this one. You saved me. I have an interview in 2 hours for a customer service position and I almost decided my example for this question would be that I am not a perfect communicator of my work - not a good example at all because it says nothing about how I will work with clients in the workplace.

Need another advise!
I have 7 years of experience with 6 different companies. Most of the times my profile won't go ahead because people see me as job hopper. But that's not the truth. I have a genuine reason everytime I go looking for a job (either I had fallen sick or it would be a contract role for certain period or so on..)
Even now I'm looking for a job because company is getting shut down.
Can you advise how do I convince the interviewers on this part ?

@@nikhitasuresh4881 The key while answering these questions is not to come across negative and that is focusing on all the positive aspects, focusing on why you are such a solid candidate, rather than explaining why you left each job and turning a big part of the interview about it. While handling this concrete point, just be straightforward with them about it, just like how you've been with me. Just say that you are not a "job hopper" and that things were completely circumstantial.

Much better than those who tell about saying about strengths instead of weaknesses. As an additional thing you learn from that answer that a guy will do different from you asked for just to save his image. This will repeat at work.
Thanks a lot, Dmitriy. Strength as a weakness isn't the right strategy because an experienced interviewer might ask further questions which will ruin such answer.
What do you mean about a guy "doing different to save his image"?
@@myemmotion I mean that a guy is focused on having a favourable impression on me, not on the essence of the topic I asked him to consider. So this might repeat in work - I ask to do one thing, but he will focus on impression on me, not on the actual situation. So he is not doing what he is asked for deliberately, on purpose. Worst scenario. This shows me as a manager that in case of real problems I may not rely on such a person.
@@dmitriymatison5234 Alright, so you are speaking from the managerial point of view, while hearing someone answer this question.
First thing is all the candidates which are so keen on "selling" their answer eventually end up being a disappointment. As you mentioned, those that easily fabricate anything to get their way through the interview will of course do that at the job as well.

I told them my greatest weakness was my perfectionism. Actually, my perfectionism is a weakness of mine. I explained to them the reason why. I got the job, and 14 years later I'm about to be fired.

- I focus too much on the details and - I have a hard time letting go of a project.
As long as you have a genuine answer to back these up.

This question really bites me in the neck the most. I can be very blunt about my weaknesses
Let's try I'm a hot mess but I'm trying to clean up and I'm not here to open my heart to a complete and total stranger because that's one of the ways I became a hot mess in the first place. It gets really really dark really really fast when I'm ready I will finally talk about it to who I trust. And trust takes time and knowledge about who the other person is over that time. Period, end of report.
I completely agree about not "opening your heart" to a complete stranger. Not useful at all.
When they say "My weakness is that in situations when there's a deadline i tend to want things done quickly and efficiently" that sounds a lot like a strength in disguise

My greatest weakness is procrastinate. Whenever I assigned to some work. I start when I'm close to due date. But when I procrastinate those things, I always think about it in creative way... Actually I can come up with creative work even I'm near due date. Sometimes it makes me streesed that I may not able to submit. So I decided to not get stressed and now working on it. During pandemic, I helped myself by assigning work last night and doing next day and reward myself. Actually I motivated me. yet, I'm working on it.
Is this appropriate answer? My original weakness is this. I can't think of any other.
It's a risky answer. It's well structured and put but some hiring managers might not be too receptive.

Fantastic, I have to ask though, is it really a weakness if you have worked and corrected it? I totally understand that the interviewers buy into this but I think it is basically a past weakness if you have resolved it
Hi there! It is completely normal to have this doubt. The whole point of giving a strong answer is acknowledging that you have/had this weakness and that you are trying to get better (or you've already gotten better). Working on your weaknesses is never black or white, it's a bit like exercising, you can never overdo it and just leave it in the past. It requires work and time as long as you really want to keep improving.
What if i want to be recruited in a sales position and my biggest weakness is being shy by nature and i have just one word to describe it in my questionnaire (it simply have no space for description of my weakness)

What about this my greatest weakness is that I'm too apologitcal, I appologise when it's not necessary for the sake of peace however I've learnt to acknowledge this weakness, by improving by approaching matters in an assertive manager thus has made me to communicate better???? What do you think?

I think it could work, but keep in mind that being "apologetical" can mean that you don't feel as secure about what you do, otherwise you wouldn't be apologizing. Think about the next question, the follow up question which they might ask you. Like "Give me an example of when this weakness was shown at work?". If you can give a convincing answer and how you managed to get better then you can use it as a weakness :)

my weakness is sometimes I'm late it takes me a week or two weeks usd to my new work schedule and once I caught onto my new work schedule I come by in an hour or two hours early how would I use that as a weakness and a strength?

Hi there! You know being nervous have so many ways to get interpreted. I wouldn't advise you to use this as a weakness unless you want to say something concrete and a concrete positive change you managed to make.

The interviewer doesn't ask this question to discover your weaknesses, they ask it to throw you off base and see if you can handle the question with poise.
I would say that most employers don't ask this question anymore. There are better ways to root out a candidate's knowledge, skills and abilities.

Hi there, what is the job you are applying to? Depending on the job you could mention that you are a naturally shy person but you keep working on it in order to be more vocal and extroverted, no matter how hard it's been so far. Which should show that you try stepping out of your comfort zone.
