I can't believe that I never heard about "Delete Generated Library Files". This is going to save so much space on all my external hard drives. Thank you for this amazing tip... You are the best! 🙌
THIS IS THE WAY! I always create a new folder with a new library and all the relevant files for each project I work on and I don't always do this to move from computer to computer but I just like the way it's organized and when I archive projects to my server it's super clean.
In my workflow I think the easiest way to transfer a project is not to use a folder for your footage but rather keep your footage inside your library file organized using "Events" in the library. That way everything is stored in a single file instead of a folder structure that could be broken once transferred. On the topic of library file size. If you're using a modern day mac like a M1-M4 there's no need to even create "optimized media" or proxies since these computers can scrub through 4K timelines without an issue. Turn off optimized media creation and proxies in the settings and you'll never have to delete them to reduce file size!
Great tips. I’ve gotten into storing l the video files in library too which makes project files huge but really easy to go back and forth between computers.
If you set the cache location to another folder on the hdd and not the project itself the fcp project stays small and the cache files balloon in size but you can just delete them when ever you feel like and it won’t affect anything
For lightweight shareable libraries: - Turn off background rendering - Turn off “create optimized media for multicam clips” - modify your library storage locations so cache, motion templates, and original media are stored outside the library. Also zip libraries before you transfer them through cloud services. Or you can also export XMLs and share those.
Thanks for the tips! I create 1 library per video, and usually it lives on an SSD, makes it very easy to move it from computer to computer if needed. I can't imagine creating more than one video per library as it gets large very quickly.
If it’s just you, I find an aliased shared folder works great, and of course if you put it into an iCloud shared location (for Macs) then it will automatically sync between systems (which may or may not be desirable). If syncing, I recommend picking one system to be your ‘final’ system, aka the system you will always finalize projects on then transfer to whatever backup/archival system you have to avoid accidentally deleting things before they’re backed up.
Hey Mr Buck I'd like to thank you for all the information about podcast. I was wondering if you know if you can use a Midi pad on the Rode caster pro 2 to end your recording in Ecam?
Hey! So I'm not a MIDI expert, but yes you can set up some basic controls for switching and stuff. I have an older video that shows the process here, but again I'm definitely not an expert: ruclips.net/video/wS-9CaA5d_k/видео.html
Rode recently added support for virtual channels, which is a little funky on Mac, but does work. I like loopback a lot too and do often use that to assign apps to specific faders.
I made a video on it back in September: ruclips.net/video/JCjHK3gkh5A/видео.html It's a super nice mic! I think it'd be extremely popular if it were a bit cheaper, but I like it quite a bit.

Glad I could help! The world “delete” makes it sound scary, but it’s a bit of a misnomer.
As ever, thanks so much, Tom. Another great video with brilliant tips.
Really appreciate the kind words! I know FCP tutorials aren’t always the most exciting topic but they’re helpful!

Yep, that’s the move! Their naming conventions are tricky, but once you look at a library as basically just a project it makes a bit more sense.

Yeah, I've never used proxies and things work so incredibly well on newer-ish computers!
This is how I do it. Good idea to make a video about this Tom!
I don't use Final cut. I just watch for Tom's wonderful presentation.

Yep- there are pros and cons but I think that’s the smoothest overall workflow.
Thanks for the tip, Tom! Would love a video on the new magnetic mask in FCP. Also, I think it's time for a haircut hehe.
I haven’t upgraded to the new MacOS yet 😬

I’m pretty much the same! Works really well overall.

Great tip! FCP definitely seems to work best when it’s a solo user situation.
I just got my new camera backpack week ago, It felt so right to me now. 🙂
It’s a K&F Concept one btw.
Oh nice! I’ve heard really good things about those ones!
@ Yep, It is and I even think that my K&F camera backpack is a nest for my cameras. (and everything) 🥲

@tombuck thank you.
I’d be curious to know the size reduction comparison between this tip for FCP and consolidating a Premiere project
how does the rodecaster handle MAC OS ? Do you use loopback to use the faders on separate apps ?

I'm surprised you're not reviewing the shure sm4. All the RUclipsrs have gotten their review sample mics to give their "unbiased" review
