    Done a fair bit of work on windmills here in Oz. The idea of a tail is quite simple. Just need a triangular "tail" directly behind the cone with the two fixed together on a pivot. With a little careful design the tail will counterbalance the cone. On our windmills the head with fan is designed so that the fan turns edge on to the wind, i.e parallel with the tail, in a strong wind.
    The idea of having a turbine down low is great, makes for much easier maintenance and can be built with very little cost
    Now Lets turn the idea on its head! Here I am sitting in 40 degree heat, up to 45 here and 50 in some of the places I work in. I have quite literally fried an egg on a shovel left out in the sun.
    Put the cone at the bottom of a vertical large diameter pipe, painted mat black. Now we have venturi plus convection. The cone forces air into the hot pipe the, air heats up and we have a chimney effect as well.
    Raises a couple of questions what length of pipe (related to diameter) would be needed to make this work effectively and does the turbine have to be mounted at the top of the pipe? would the velocity of air near the bottom of the pipe be enough to run a turbine.

    Back in my Merchant Navy days we would use Venturis for a lot of things, one comes to mind when we were creating our own fresh water and into your straight four inch pipe we would lead a smaller diameter pipe to suck up chemicals to add to the main flow in the venturi. As your system is at the moment heavy rain is going to set your electrical fan but if you put your fan into the four inch pipe from a 90 degrees angle the inlet of the additional pipe could have a few bends to take out the rain and just have dryer air hitting the fan.I've been hoping that you would get to venturi systems for many years as it does benefit systems in a domestic environment where we cannot have big towers etc. Many THANKS

    Hi Rob, If I recall, the Venturi Effect is most efficient when the inlet and exhaust are on axis.
    the air flow past the exhaust is what drops the air pressure at that end of the system.
    Adding the bends in the duct will also cause a loss for each turn.
    There is an HVAC calculation for that.

    • @ThinkingandTinkering
      @ThinkingandTinkering  2 года назад +1

    When you mentioned adding a fin to spin the cone into the wind it reminded me of windmills. On older windmills the fin also had a fan that was connected to a gear set to assist in spinning the top. The blades of the fin were paralell to the fin so either direction of the wind would cause the fan to turn in a different direction and a worm gear spin the top section.

    Well done :)
    My mind goes to a "what if you ran this down to a dyson style air multiplier?" (their so called "bladeless" fans) Don't know if that would be good for turning a larger turbine, but it seems like it would make for an Excellent passive ventilation system (obviously you could just do it with the pipe but that dyson design moves a lot more air than a regular fan) You could get your venturi up above the roof where the breezes are, down to a window box. Might be particularly good in like barns, warehouses, shops and things, to save on having to run a fan all the time.
    Could maybe be adapted for more efficient attic ventilation than a whirly-bird as well.

  • @stevetobias4890

    Very cool. This means that you could connect 12 upper cones at 30 degrees to get the wind at any point. I guess you would need to ensure that they meet at some point down the tube to make sure that they cannot cancel each other out (if done with multiple tubes).

    Would the air pressure while trying to exit the fan back up and load the top cone, as you will be slowing down the air flow. In my head the loss in air speed or pressure change is the energy you are extracting. But i may be wrong, but the electrical energy must be the affect of losing something in the air stream.

      since air has energy extracted out of it, it will slow down and spread out to a larger diameter flow. the gradual transition in a cone shape prevents it from becoming very very turbulent in the process, which would reduce the flow rate of the air throughout the system down to, in worst case, almost zero

    This could be useful to move air near an AC installed in a dead zone. I've seen the versions where the turbines are located on the ridge of a roof. The angle increases the wind speed there. That's basically how they cool roofs down in California..roof turbines. And they work, just not much of extractable power. But I'm pretty curious to see how much you get. For perspective, a single 12v fan powered by a 100w solar panel would do like 20 times more than a passive turbine working due to air flow or pressure from the hot air in the attic.

    I believe one should create wind, using the elements of heat (source; house roof) + cool air to develop a wind draft, combine effort with natural wind. Especially in warmer sunny climates.

    I Designed something like this 20 years ago. All pipes went uniquely straight down to a common pipe, each with a 90° corner.
    Where they all had their own a vertical one way vent. So they don't have to overcome gravity.
    Not sure if the air speed is enough but i would try to put something more like he a true Dyson-Cone shape at the exit and not just a cone.
    I have no idea if it makes any difference. But air-wing shaped cone feels more efficient. Next time when it's not a proof of concept.

    • @CGrenfeldt
      @CGrenfeldt 2 года назад +1

      I also scribbled something after the generator so the exit is looped back up to the cones on the backside where it's less pressure. (Also one way vents).
      The 'suction' should/might make it more efficient with less resistance

    Off-topic event I don't know if you did a video but what if you had a big cone or like a big bowl And on one side of it you make it higher than the other side with a rim thing and then you put some floats on it and you figure out where to float it when there is no waves with an anchor and then when the waves come they go into the bowl and down a pipe to turn a turbine The only thing with that I would think debris in the water would The one that cause problems

    You are kidding me! I literally am developing a new technology based on this theory of wind collection, ducted to the turbine. My idea is to make a slightly tapered funnel of plastic (lightweight), such as trash bags seamed together, lifted with helium balloons to test, possibly a kite system for lift, or sticking it on a tall poll. Should significantly reduce the cost per watt, if my theory is correct.

    This very much looks like one of those ideas where a small scale model can kind of work if you don't care about the efficiency or cost, but it is very much not practical on any useful scale. The mouth of that cone looks like about 16x area of your fan, so how much energy does it produce compared to fan without anything blocking the wind?
    AFAIK there is no large version of this that has ever managed to be economical or efficient, with the possible exception of a full scale solar updraft tower, but those are still in prototype state. The reason is simple: To get that 100mm fan to turn you need, what, hundred times more material? More? If the problem you are trying to solve is how much the turbine weights and the tower will cost, it is doubtful that a many times more massive cone that also requires a more expensive tower to hold it will help you.
    Most projects trying to use this idea seem to focus on "instead of 10m turbine you only need a 1m turbine!", but 1. a 10m cone is still more troublesome to build and lift up there than the 10m turbine and might actually cost more, and 2. no, a 1m turbine is not going to produce more power than a 10m turbine and trying to force 100x more wind through it is just likely to break it.
    Basically, unless you have some materials breakthrough and your maintenance costs are vastly out of proportion I don't see this ever becoming anything but a toy. The solar updraft tower I mentioned involves a tower up to mile high and either a full grid scale 100+m turbine or a large number of smaller ones and would only be useful because you could build it in an area with no wind at all and it would still work.

(2liter bottles for me.) You would not believe how many things I have made with those things, even made a way to collect rain water and trap it below ground at the roots of a garden. one top as funnel and a whole bottle with holes poked in bottom portion for below ground portion then bury it :)

      Hi Clint many earlier so called water car inventors realised it's not the water but they went along with that . It's lightning magnetic neutrals the lightning bolt is electrostatic that makes the void (push apart air motion ) and the thunder the vacuum magnetic static pull/ attraction motion . It's in all energies we call atoms but tesla lord kelvin etc had an insight of vacuum energy we may relate it as anti matter . The Beirut large explosion last year portrayed the dirty knowledge of this energies potential . But in its purist form in a pressurised vessel it's far more powerful than a atom bomb . That's the problem . In the wrong hands a disaster

    • @honda4004
      @honda4004 2 года назад

      Clint the glow plug is stainless steel the inner is a wound s.s wire spiralling from top to bottom . The reason it produces excellent is that the energies are not parrell ( like you are shown in normal electrolysis the cathode and anode in a water filled jar parrell to each other instead the spiral inner lets the element in water attract to the element coming off the inner face of the outer positive . This then allows a type of condensed rain to vapour out . I've shown kids of 7 to 11 to copy it and they are so in awe when they themselves achieve it . It's that simple . Note the arc welding rod is solid as to use a copper wire would suffice but only one strand .as if the strands are wound within each other the current gets interfered as it goes from positive battery to source . Like cars travelling up the motorway they all have to stay in their lanes ( vander volt forces
