It was a rabbit hole of information once I started researching this topic. Some incredible studies are ongoing at the moment. If there is interest, I will make a follow up video in the future with some of the results the current studies.
Glad to hear all the benefits of chilis since I'm a chili addict. I didn't grow up on it but came to love it as an adult. My mother always says I'm skinny (I'm 122 lbs at 5'10") because of all the hot food I eat. Who cares? I feel great!
I was eating the second half of my cayenne chilli pepper when watching this video. I'm eating chilli everyday now, and i like it more and more. I think they are good for me, that's why i support this video
I had a really bad case of food poisoning during a visit to Thailand. I had stuff coming out of me at both ends for hours and hours. After I was emptied, my stomach was very jittery and all I was able to get down for almost 4 days was water and maybe a couple of bananas. At that point, I was very hungry and finally had to force myself to some food. I chose a dish that I didn't think would be too spicy. Was I wrong! It was very hot but being starved, I managed to get about 4 tablespoons of rice with the sauce into me. Ten minutes later, I was 100% cured! Hot food really does settle the stomach!
Fact 6 explains why I'm one of the rare people who experiences burn when I pee after eating extremely hot peppers. Also I melt my face off at least one meal a day and I've only been sick twice with a cold since 2009. I'm 52 years old so I joke with people saying that I've already caught everything at my age! The truth may very well be the herbs and spices and hot peppers I eat daily. Just saying.
I have had a similar experience. I eat a lot of "spicy" food and add my own hot spices. Also lots of garlic, Greek olive oil and butter. Really strong health, despite stress. I was sick twice this year and couldn't do anything. It felt like a bad flu. Had the Corona finally caught up with me? This was the first serious infection in 10 years. First time in January 2023 and then again in April 2023, which is quite unusual for me.
Greeting from the other side of the pond. Found your channel thanks to the Google suggestions algorithms, amazing information. As a chile (Mexican style) adept I loved your channel and this video in particular made me appreciate chiles even more. For reference, I have two eggs sunny side up, three tortillas, a cup of black coffee and a serrano pepper for breakfast almost every day :) Thank you for this information, I wish I could safely purchase seeds from you but I'm afraid customs will reject the package. Can't wait to see the end of your harvest, those chiles look amazing!
I was not aware of all these health benefits. Maybe (one day) being a chile eater will reduce our insurance costs lol. Thank you for doing all the researching condensing it down. I now have more things to read up on.
OMG! That has to be one of the best videos you have ever done Shaun. absolutely astounding and mind blowing information. I would imagine that there has been a good few weeks of work gone into producing that 10 minute video. well done and thankyou for such invaluable information as unfortunately I do suffer with a number of the medical conditions listed, but luckily for me I also grow lots of chili's , although not a patch on what you do! great looking garden fellow Chilli head 😀 🌶 i have iBS im just finding out about this with peppers and I've been a long time fan of peppers. Johnny scoville actually informed me of this
Wonderful work Shaun...you have elevated your channel to a higher level and you have definitely separated yourself from the ordinary chilli growers and chilli eaters who are hundreds of them on RUclips...very professional approach
Thanks for providing all that information it was really helpful. Equally amazing was the speed at which you pronounced all those medical terms. Well done.
Brilliant video as always .you are producing some fantastic content .on behalf of all gardening and chili growers thank you .Best wishes from Ireland 🇮🇪 to you and your family .😊
Awesome health information. Been growing and dabbling in peppers for the past 3 years now and expanding the garden each season. Subscribed!!! Thank you sir.
After a year and a half with hot pepper sauce a daily part of my diet I have kept my excess weight off and last summer during an extremely hot summer I was not bothered but the heat after about 6 weeks of building fences out in the direct sun and heat! This video explained a LOT for me!! I have shared this video many times on my videos and IRL! I am VERY interested in a follow up when more information is available!
wow, thanks for this, even if chillies can help at all, this is fantastic news for me. Thanks for your in depth research and citing your information. Really thorough work.
Awesome fact filled video Shaun! The boat load of reading available in your resource listing is a complete bonus! I had a general awareness of positive health benefits within the native populations in the southwestern part of the states here. But generally that would be old data now. One curious feature to perhaps keep in mind is the negative health consequences associated with the typical westernized diet. At one time a general observation could have suggested that a diet rich in hot spicy foods seemed to lead to a much healthier system overall. I suspect a mere glance at the growing waistline of many populations would lead to the understanding that good peppers are lacking. Any follow up to these studies or new trials could be very interesting when available. Stay Spicy! -Bob...
Fun fact ;. Chillies plants , will with minimal care , grow for several years - there's a jalapeno pepper a few doors down that's been growing for over 10 years , always producing fruit . Mum used to grow cayane peppers when I was very young , other chillies varietys weren't available at the time in the area we lived - not in the northern hemisphere .
Good research! I have heard that capsaicin had health benefits in cancer but never read the articles about it. I’m going to read the articles you mentioned here! As a Pharmaceutical grad student I’m always interested in topics like this!
I’ve been enjoying habanero peppers pretty much daily. I love the taste of them but I don’t really try the hotter varieties. I wish I could have just even a small scale green house just to grow peppers. Keep up the good videos you make.
I grow 10 variaties of peppers in my livingroom windowsill, I have a lot of sunshine there and the grow just like any plant would grow. I get lots of peppers 🙂
Habaneros taste amazing! All of them from yellow to chocolate... Some say they are superhot but that's a myth. I make my own sauces and ferment chilies for up to 3 yrs. This year I decided to add ONE trinidad scorpio to a 1kg mash of habaneros. A bit more evil hot but still tasty. My problem with superhot chilies is the taste. There's verry little taste and a lot of burning sensation. So this year I'm experimenting with superhot sauces that actually taste good. Next year I'll try to crossbreed different superhots with different habaneros...
A lot of Super hero's in the world. And You are mine. I've seen a lot of your videos and every one of them are colorful and very beautifully done.ThankYou for making these awesome videos
Lots of interesting content! Be nice if they included human test subjects in the studies and capsaicin levels consumed. I try to eat one or two superhots a day. Growing 30 plants ranging chocolate scotch bonnets, to Trinidad moruga scorpions, butch t scorpion and 7 pot barrackpore. Definitely feel healthier
There is also the mental health benefit. Depression, unhappiness - then make a chili, a good curry, pizza with chili will cheer you up. Especially for breakfast. Well, it works for me.
An incredibly professional channel. I'd be interest to know if you found anything on Parkinsons Disease. My mother has it and finds relief from CBD. I'd be interested in other herbal relief such as capsaicin. Thanks as always for your efforts.
Great video Shaun, you clearly put a lot of effort into the research. As a number 10 you could have added growing chillis is great fun and good for your physical and mental health getting out and about in the garden :)
Thanks for video….I’ve been on the chilli cayenne capsicum rabbit hole for weeks….I wanted to grow and eat the right one for heart health. I did buy organic chilli powder, then I watched a video that said Cayenne Pepper is the only one to grow and eat….then I looked at what I was growing and my plant was a “Caysan Chilli” apparently a hybrid?….even though the picture on the plant tag look just like the ones on the videos left me totally confused. So is a chilli a chilli still a chilli? Are all chillies good for you? Is a chilli pepper a capsicum as we Aussies call them? Or are chillies and capsicums all the same just the heat is different.
Capsicum is the genus. Sweet bell peppers (or Capsicums as they are called in Aus) are the same genus as Carolina reapers and habaneros. Jalapenos are the same genus and the same species as bell peppers. All chillies are beneficial. The active compound I mention in this video quite a bit is capsaicin (which brings the heat). So bell peppers don't have any of that. Cayenne has some. Havenero has quite a bit. Carolina reaper has a ton
Love this information!!!! Questions; what is the best way to eat peppers for the best health benefit, raw or cooked. (Does cooking diminish the health properties) What daily quantities do you need to eat for health benefits.
Great video as always. I just shared it on my facebook page but did it by copy and paste (not the share function as I saw that option too late). I hope you don't mind. Hopefully, it will generate some more traffic.
Hi Shaun, I think I can say I've finally had a successful chilli growing year for the first time thanks to your channel. What I want to ask now is can I overwinter some of my chilli plants, is it worth doing and how do I do it? I don't think I can bring myself to throw all my lovely plants on the compost heap!
I'm really glad you had a good season! Personally I don't overwinter very much, but I understand not wanting to throw away your beautiful plants. Have a look at these two videos, hope they help! ruclips.net/video/RVPYl4EhEkE/видео.html ruclips.net/video/YaRaY4RT1XI/видео.html
I absolutely love your channel. in your experience what is the best way to ripen cayenne indoors? I'm in Canada zone 5B and this year got a huge amount of cayenne peppers but solid green and our season is almost done. Any advice to ripen them faster so I can make sauce?
Thank you! To help ripen your chillies, as long as they are fully grown...get them somewhere cool. This will speed up the ripening process. Same thing happens naturally outdoors as we go into Autumn

Now that I'm eating healthy, I like to add this to my fresh tomato juice.
I have been eating hot chiles in some form in my food for decades. I am super healthy at 73 years young.
Makes me thankful I grew up in Colorado, which is definitely chilli country.
How convenient, I just tonight grabbed up the last of the habaneros and other chilis from the garden! I might live forever!

I use Chilli or pepper to clear my nostrils when I have the common cold. Vicks inhalers just backs up the mucus but peppers clear them out of you.
