Wow. Watching this 11 years after it's first posting here, I am in awe. I had seen this building often but never knew what it was and never realized it was built 'on top/inside' the original structure. Interesting on the board meeting and coincidental timing with 9/11. I would imagine this structural architecture would also perform well in an seismic event. Heartwarming to see Good Housekeeping takes their pristine reputation seriously! Enjoyed the vid, even 11 years later! Thanks! 👍

Isn't this just a 26 minute ad for Hearst?

This was my first job when I finally got into the union. I did about 23 floors of work there. Beautiful building and has great views too.

That’s Hideous!! If they put a huge jester’s head on top it would make a nice jack-in-the-box. They should have continued skyward with the elegant and classy original Art Deco style.

What happened to the interior furnishings and surface coverings of the original building? How can you replace stone and marble with glass and steel and say you've preserved a landmark?

He said that the office space of the original building was outdated with low ceilings etc...

Can anyone tell me where I can find the original tower design that was never done? I couldn't find it.

What's the point in giving a building landmark status if you are just going to turn around and let a glass monstrocity be put on top of it?

The old building had a presence, and history to it(be it good, or bad). I feel like they scooped the guts out of it to build an ephemeral cod piece.

Amazing how they can call this a treasure? Yeah the original building was a treasure. To me a 3 year old could have designed this tower, it looks like someone used crayons and construction paper. How butt ugly, from that architectural masterpiece to a criss cross Edward Scissorhands design. Who in their right mind would say this is beautiful? It looks like someone vomited on the interior of that art deco masterpiece. I have never seen this building before it was destroyed, have not been back to NYC since 1971 never saw the WTC completed. Sad they demolish all these grand Dames, Made me sick to see the Biltmore Hotel in Bellview Florida destroyed. Did the same thing kept the lobby and demolished the rest of that Magnificent structure!!!

@@tedarias9040 lmao the original building have 6 floors and its basically a box with decoration on it, nothing special, but the Hearst tower is and will always be a national treasure, just because you dont see the beauty doesnt means that others will have follow your opinion, cry about it lol.
And i assumed you dont even study architecture, you are trying to be edgy saying that a 3 years old can design that building, what a clown

Patty Hearst lived across the street from me in Garrison, NY. I believe she's still there.

Its two parts of other wholes somewhere. This isnt it.
Looks like it would fit better in Malaysia where anything goes so long as its glass or one of its newer incarnations.
So pleased comfort and style were once again sacrificed to "green" misdirection.

I worked for good housekeeping in the late fifties. The Art Deco look should have been adequate but it is very ugly now with a glass top.

The base is uninspired and the tower is simply well, sort of Like skyline banal...given the not inconsiderable size of Hearst, you'd think they could comisión something of aesthetic worth....

Another butt ugly monstrosity from Foster & Partners. They do love a bit of 'Ugly Modernism'. Looks like they added a rich man's greenhouse on top of the original. Even uglier than 'The Gherkin' in London.

it's nice to hear someone talk about a woman's magazine without being lectured and yelled at by some Woke Warrior picking every goddamned word apart in cane it "triggers" some poor soul in need of a "safe space " where everyone is "inclusive"
