4:40 Heck yeah, I'd love a video on Scapa Flow, especially coverage of the U-47/Royal Oak confrontation there. It could be a FFF video as Scapa Flow was far from any town and we all know how much sailors love "Liberty Cities." BTW, USS Olympia wasn't mentioned. It is technically a "cruiser" but it is a Spanish American War museum ship docked in Philadelphia.

We figured out the plane vs. ship stuff in WWI, too, which is kinda hilarious. (Bismarck got taken out by a WWI bi-plane) The military doesn't like to keep up with the times, as much as they push r&d that progresses society. They only stopped teaching bayonet training in 2010. Bayonet. Training. From like... the napoleonic era and not really used since WWI, with the design of turning a (specifically long) rifle into a short spear. The fact that they were trying to teach that on a freaking compact assault rifle (spoiler, it didn't work for crap) for guys setting out for the recent war in Afghanistan is a pretty great example of how behind the times our military can be in weird ways. 😂

My father was a Navy man during Korea. I do remember in his memoirs he related his excitement when he was given the message to take to his commander on the bridge that the "Mighty Mo" had arrived on station. He avidly followed naval battles and history during World War 2 (trying to run away and enlist even!), and just seeing that battleship pull in on station was a highlight of that year's extra service he had to pull when Korea broke out. I wish he could have lived to have seen her at Pearl Harbor. He would certainly have appreciated the juxtaposition of the Arizona and the Missouri.

The Yamato was not the most powerful. She just had the biggest guns. That didn’t stop her from becoming one of the largest man made artificial reef. Both the Wisconsin and Mo are actually in the mothball. Still to this day. Those two could be restored. Funny thing about the New Jerseys dry dock means she could be added as well. Nothing can change the topography like an Iowa class. See I think they add a try me tactic to the US Navy.

Great video of a very complicated subject. I was a little disappointed that the Royal Navy did not feature more in the narrative. The first battleships at war sunk by air attack were Italian. They were sunk in Taranto Harbor by Swordfish torpedo bombers from the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious November 1940. The first capital ships to be sunk by air attack while under war and able to defend themselves was Force Z. This consisted of the new battleship HMS Prince of Wales and the battlecruiser HMS Repulse. They were sunk by Japanese land based planes off the coast of Malaya, 10th December 1941.

While the Battle of the Denmark Strait was a pretty prominent fight between battleships and battlecruisers, you did leave out one final battle between battleships: the Battle of Surigao Strait, of course part of the greater Battle of Leyte Gulf. The last battleline action in history where 6 American Standard-type battleships (5 of whom were present during the Attack on Pearl Harbor; Pennsylvania, Tennessee, California, Maryland and West Virginia) under the command of Rear-Admiral Jesse Oldendorf, fought against Admiral Shoji Nishimura's "Southern Force" which consisted of the 2 Fuso-class super-dreadnaughts Fuso, herself, and her sister ship Yamashiro. The heavy cruiser Mogami, and the 4 destroyers Shigure, Michishio, Asagumo and Yamagumo.

Battleships never went away. They dropped the armor, switched their large caliber guns to missiles and become submersible.
Modern Subs, especially in the USA navy are Capital Ships that cost Hundreds of millions of dollars to make and maintain. Just like battleships did.
Subs in the USA used to be named after fish but as they become more Strategic over tactical (nukes) they started naming the Subs after States Just like The US used to name their battleships after States. Almost every Sub is named after a State or Politician of some note, just like every Fleet Carrier is named after either a President or a politician. (Other than the Enterprize and the Doris Miller)
The US Navy downplays how important Subs are in their Fleet. Mostly they talk about the Fleet carriers, but the Subs and the Amphibious ships (Former gator navy) are just as important as the Fleet carriers.
But yeah, Subs are the battleships of the today. Battleship shore bombarded will always be missed, a Motor would probably still be useful for that role.
