  • Chicago ApproachControl did us a solid today. With weather (snow) sliding in from the west, the satellite traffic may not have been overwhelming, but they gave us exactly what we needed exactly when we needed it.
The plan was simple. I required one instrument approach to keep me legal until April. However, several complications reared their ugly heads. With light winds from the west, DuPage Airport will normally remain on Runways 20 Right and 20 Left. For a weekend warrior, this is a surmountable challenge, but a challenge, none the less.
Not synchronistically, the tower magnanimously was cutting the GA pilots a break and was primarily using Runway 28. Unfortunately, this squashed our plan to shoot an ILS approach to Runway 10. With four in the traffic pattern,we would have diving headlong into opposite-direction traffic.
    Therefore, we ditched that plan.
Mind you, we knew that approaching snow showers were less than an hour away at DeKalb airport and were heading in our direction.
Aurora municipal airport is only 15 miles to the southwest. Plan B became a side trip to Aurora airport for the RNAV Runway 27 approach. After advising DuPage Tower of our new departure request, the plan was put into action. Shortly after liftoff, I passed the controls to safety pilot Alex Toepper and strapped on the super hood to simulate flying in the clouds. Mere moments later, Mother Nature tossed in a new wrinkle.
Alex said that I remove my super hood.
The whole simulate flying in the clouds thing was about to halt because we were minutes away from driving into a snow squall. Flying into clouds while navigating under visual flight rules is all kinds of bad.
So I got on the radio with DuPage tower and request to come back to our five-minutes-ago point of departure.
They suspected that we were having more serious problems and asked if I wanted some fire trucks to greet me when I touched down.
I appreciated their concern but advised them that weather was impacting our scheme. They kindly invited me to enter the right downwind for Runway 28.
As we noted that weather conditions were much more favorable over the airport and to the north, I suddenly asked them if I could depart the pattern to the north and execute the RNAV approach to Runway 20 Roght and then circle around and land on Runway 28.
The quick-witted controller approved of my alternative and promptly switched us to the Chicago approach control frequency with our request. Because we were already at 2,500 feet, we posed no conflict to his other arrivals. That being said, it is a credit to him that he recognized with clarity that he would be providing outstanding service by shipping us to approach control.
In another plum for the FAA, Chicago Approach approved our request to slam-dunk ourselves on the RNAV Runway 20 Right final approach course.
Thusly, victory was pulled out of the jaws of defeat and I completed UFR approach number 6 for the period.
Safe flying, y’all!! Happy New Year!!
