    Mira,
    My thoughts… it’s fine Mira! You have been creating art for a bit. So, I believe as an artist you figure out what works and what doesn’t. I agree it is fun to try new things. Then again when we find what does the job and its quality. We tend to be creatures of habit. As always, you bring joy to so many people and give heartfelt advice.
    Best to you and your family.
    Warm Regards,
    Martina

They’re the go to for my Copic markers as my local art store, Plaza Art, doesn’t sell refills for the markers. I can’t wait to see what you create on all of these canvas. Thanks for all you do and keep creating/making amazing videos!!

    After watching so many art videos where the haul is about what the green-eyes monster "I want" dictated, because the artists already had far more than they could use in their lifetime, I made a rule to stop watching them.
    Mira, I watched this one because you'd set a sensible budget and the explanation: "Come along with me for a realistic art haul where I buy the bare essentials."
    Thankyou for daring to be different and for sharing your shopping with us with that evident pleasure of replacing in order to use. 😊
    Edit to add: I am constantly being caught out because so many shops here don't open till ten o'clock!!! So I fully appreciate your problem! 😄

    Hey Mira! Do you have any thoughts about printing out your references rather than going off a screen? I keep seeing short videos about how you can have trouble achieving correct colors because the screens are backlit. And personally, I can't decide if I feel it's true or not...but I have been having a little trouble with it. So maybe it is true! What do you think?

    • @MiraByler
      @MiraByler  Год назад

    Wow! Mira, sometimes stuff that is marketed as "artist/art" products are actually fairly generic products but with the prices hiked up massively. If you look in the homewares/kitchenware sections of stores or online you can find glass chopping boards or surface protector things (to save the counter tops where you make hot drinks/cook with stuff that can stain etc) that are identical to the palette you bought but about a third of the price. It's like your cast iron meat tray things that you use for acrylic palettes - if you bought something exactly the same only marketed as a paint palette it would probably be 2 or 3x as expensive!
    Another really good idea, especially with toddlers who are up and about and into absolutely everything they're not supposed to be 😂 is to buy thin sheets of clear acrylic, either already cut to size or if you have the tools/skills/spouse with the know-how you can get a big piece and cut it to size yourself. Use these to replace the glass in photo frames which makes them safer if they are knocked over, no smashed glass pieces hiding to wait for unwary little fingers to find etc and you can use the glass for palettes of varying sizes. Just buy a pack of the silicone blob things (or if you really want to cut the budget down use either blu-tack, cork slices or bits taken from a kneaded eraser) to stop the glass moving over the table or scratching the surface.
    I'm sure the one you bought will last a long time (as will the other suggestions) so in the long run $30+ seems ok, but if you'd have gone with the cheaper options think how many more beautiful paints you could have gotten! 😂

    • @MiraByler
      @MiraByler  Год назад

      Thanks for the tips! I love Blick’s. They have been good to me for years, so I don’t mind spending extra to support them! 🥰

    • @Littlewings1211
      @Littlewings1211 Год назад

      @@MiraByler that's fair enough. It wasn't a comment aimed at Blick's in particular (I am in the UK so we don't have those here) it applies to a whole bunch of different things. If they're marketed for a specific purpose, like art or cooking for example, they can hike the prices way up. People buy them because they're looking for that specific purpose and find them in specific shops. I love finding bargains because I find the exact same thing (for example a tempered glass cutting board) elsewhere marketed as something more general and at a much lower cost. I can understand why companies do it, but it can be a huge waste of money for those who are just starting out in a hobby or don't know a lot of "hacks" or much cheaper alternatives (such as the butcher trays you use).
      For example, I recently started acrylic pouring and fluid art and so many of the Pouring Mediums are so expensive (like £20+ for around 1L) but you can make your own with PVA/school glue, gloss medium and/or varnish, and water and even just paint and water will work. It's such an expensive hobby so I love finding bargains or cheaper alternatives to ready-made or specifically marketed products. This means I can continue to learn and have so much fun. Have you tried fluid art on your channel? It's messy but so cool!
      I also (as you mentioned that you are on an oil painting kick at the moment) wondered if you've ever tried water mixable oil paints? Would you ever do a video tutorial for your realistic water paintings?

      @@Littlewings1211 I agree with you about marketing of artist/art products and markups. Since I don’t have a YT channel or art business I cannot pass on my art supply purchases as a business expense. Also, I generally do not follow the philosophy of ‘I don’t mind paying extra to help a business’. When I buy art supplies I try to get a good deal. Just my two cents.

    Wow…you shopped in such a smart way….you had your list…went in and got it and then GOT OUT. The longer we look, the more we tend to pick up and the bill just keeps going up. It’s a discipline that has to be learned and practiced (one that I’m working on,) if our goal is to stay in budget or if we cannot afford the extras or don’t really need them. Thanks Mira!

    I am jealous that you actually have enough time and energy to use up the art supplies you own. I have been trying to use up some of mine, and I just don't create enough to go through supplies very quickly. Granted, your job is artist (and mom, which is it's own full time job), and mine is not artist (though is mom, but my kiddo is in college, so not as much mom-ing needed).
