Born n Raised in Bakersfield....floated the river many times....swam in it year after year and now I moved to West Virginia. Listening to Merle makes me a little homesick but brings back some good memories!
I heard this on KPFA today. My dad died on the Grapevine in Kern County. His heart stopped at one of the heights of the road. I feel it was God's way of letting his soul rest. Beautiful song.
Merle was a Rare diamond - Which the likes of his kind are no more . They shall never be another like him . This isn’t a good world anymore and today’s music is proof . Thank you Merle for all the memories growing up . May Godbless you and keep you in his graces : R.I.P. 🙏 Listen durning Covid Times July 4 20
My mothers ashes are spread on lake isabella & my best memories are of us living in Kern County fishing the upper Kern & having ice cream in kernville after our awesome day❤❤❤
Nothing like good down home country music from some of the finest country singers ever. Whose gonna fill their shoes? Don't see any today. I do like Mr. ALDEAN RIP Haggard. You earned it brother.
I just finally located this song after remembering seeing this video on TNN back when it first came out in 1985 when I was 9. All I could remember was "well it's not deep nor wide, but it's a mean piece of water, my friend." Even with that, I was hazy on the specific wording. Glad I found it. Thank you to Merle for leaving a great legacy of music.
A true country artist of the great legends still was performing and writing songs up till the end of his life something that he love to do I commend him for that👍🏆
I grew up listening to Merle. My Dad introduced me to his music as far back as I can recall, probably when I was 4 years old. Merle has been my favorite artist for 45 years now and he'll be my favorite for another 45 years. When my Dad was alive Merle's music was always playing all the time. Now Dad's gone but he's always on my mind but when I listen to the Hag sing it always brings back awesome memories of my Dad. I hope Dad & Merle got to shake hands . Both of you awesome guy's RIP.
my uncle John saved a cousins life in the Kern years and years ago. my dad saved me when i was little . my dads family they were dust bowl okies , rough necks that spent time in san quentin soledad folsom and chino ...and still the best men i ever knew
I remembered this song today and found it here. I was a young man when it came out and is still one of the best songs ever made and the story is well told by the Master of country.
Born and raised in Bakersfield, in Kern County, CA, and I can say that it is called the 'Killer Kern' for a reason. So sad how many lives have been taken, especially at Hart Park. Beach park is ok when they let the river flow... Not too far from Shasta is where I call home for now, but Kern County is my home ❤
That is absolutely beautiful. I have spent my entire day listening to so many talented country singers who love the country they are living in. Fighting for the hardworking people who are the backbone of any country. Not living in a lie. Someone has dark ideas going forward. Remember his favourite poem is "the snake". Don't allow slithering poison to destroy the lives of so many unsuspecting people who are being lied to day after day. The Snake is all for himself. He wouldn't wipe his feet in the people who are enthralled for some reason by his pretending to be one of them. How many billionaires beg for money from those who can hardly get their families by month by month.?. I would bet my home that he would give no money to anyone of his supporters if they needed a dollar to survive. I am Irish sitting here in my home in Ireland loving the sounds of the places mentioned in this clip. This music is food for the soul. It's a pity that so many great people are gone. From Ireland 🇮🇪🇮🇪❤️❤️
If this is/was his last written song pure honest genius it's one more reason, and reason enough for Rolling Stone magazine to vote him the greatest country artist (male or female) of all time.
Can't even imagine your siblings and the part of life that is missing from you I never got the chance to meet Merle butt it's almost more than I can bear with him being gone can't imagine what it's like for a father like that to be gone. One thing I do know if there's a heaven and a god he definitely has Merle singing for him in heaven
I have some memories from Kern River. Good Times! But I got sunburned so bad I still have freckles on my shoulders. My bad...I was young and I listened to no one. :/
Cant say california ain't country. I live near the Kern river in a place called inyokern. Mountains with no life, tumble weeds, hot dry summers, just a bunch of land, few trees here and there. Wild West for sure.
I’m a truck driver and I remember crossing Kern river. I love Merle Haggard and my Daddy did too! I’m missing my Daddy, he was and always will be the best man I will ever have known! He taught me everything and we had a hell of a time! Love you Daddy happy Father’s Day coming,, see ya soon!
l agree with you, indeed Merle Haggard is a great and talented artist who's songs never goes out of style,he's one of my favorites artist, he songs still and always heals the Soul, I pray God gives you lot of beautiful days….
I've never seen Kern River but I'm 64 years old and have been drowning myself ever since the day Merle passed away rest in peace Merle along with Johnny Cash. My life will never be the same even though I never met him. Never a better mentor to look up to
After the winter of 2023 we had a super heavy snow melt which made the rapids in Kern River exceedingly high. One day driving on the road along the Kern River I noticed a sheriff posted on the banks. I can see a red kayak wrapped around a tree. I later found out that a kayaker had gone under and his body was stuck underwater for 43 days until the river receded and the rescue swimmers could recover his body.
Most people don’t realize that it was his horse that drowned in Kern. They were trying to cross and a current took the horses legs out. He made it to the banks, but his horse never did. Kern River still today takes several lives, but me, I’ll never swim Kern River.

In 1947 we lived a few blocks from the Hag. I followed him from my time in the Navy until his passing. There will never be another like him.
Hag there's never been a poet better 😎

Merle Haggard was a realist then became a poet then he became a musician can't get better in that

This is the saddest song I know, but I appreciate the California geography references.
Merle Haggard wasn't One of the Greats. He was the ONLY GREAT.
It was there I lost my best friend. I'll never swim Kern River again.

Kern river is dangerous ..the bank drops deep ppl don’t know it
Nice
Only a true Californians know about the Kern river
Today I Look at the Sky and wonder why and when my River will end.
Sounds like Janie Fricke, singin' backup on this 1, too.
What can we do when people just don't believe us Including our own family
Ol’ Kern river

Sad how true this song was for Merle, he did drown in still water-pneumonia!
None of the footage in this video looks like the Kern River or the Bakersfield area.
Looks like Shasta when he refers to where he lives now.
Ive dipped in the kern before. And I live to tell the tail

Love this song
Country music died the day Merle left us. All we are left with is the shell of it. Pop with a twang just isn't country.
