So many good times on that river. Family reunions. Fishing. Swimming camping. Kids. Thanks merle haggard. You have been my favorite singer for 30 years plus.
merle is my favorite singer, and always will be,his voice will never die, they just don't make singers like him anymore, thank you merle to a job well done!!
This song reminds me of my dad, he loved merle and he laid to rest in the mountains of montana in a cabin, he was in kneeling position butt naked, his thought is that I came in this world naked and I am leaving naked. My dad was my hero and I have the uttermost respect for the man. God Bless you merle and My Dad Rocky Bone
I grew up in the 60's just north of Bakersfield/Oildale in a small town called Springville...every year you would hear of the death's that happened in both the Tule and Kern river.... we local's were taught to respect the early fast run off waters that swept you away before you knew it.... My uncle's The Rinear Brothers played music with all those good ol boys from that area...they were something else....those were the days.... RIP Merle .... one of a kind man
Love to hear Merle sing this song, sad but beautiful as is every song he sings!! Miss him but believe he needed rest, a lot of miles on his body!! RIP 💔🙏😢
been going to kernville & isabella since the 50's.....in laws lived in kernville, now they have passed.....we have their home now....so many memories of the kern.....and the music that reminds me of kern..... will never fade.....
A Great song, one of my favorites off Merle's 1985 album...Kern River Well it's not deep nor wide..but it's a mean piece of water my friend..Great song Merle. I did take the time one day to checkout all the landmarks this song mentions..I found every one of them. Wouldn't mind seeing the sights for myself someday..but I'll never swim Kern river again that's for dam sure.. ;) Great song Merle
Love the song & the pictures bring back fond memories. My mom's family lived in Bakersfield & when they retired they all moved to Bodfish. My grandma warned not to swim in the Kern after the spring run off. Almost drowned there in the 50's by Hwy 99. Paid attention to grandma after that!
my dad played this in bars when i was a kid. when i was maybe 11 years old, i asked him why merle would drown in water if it wasnt moving, and he said "not still water, like a distillery, it means he will drink himself to death." this was the most profound thing my young head could wrap around. best country song ever.
I lived in Bakersfield for 9 years when I was a kid. The only thing I got from living there was the worst case of Valley Fever the doctors. I was 12 when rushed to the hospital unable to walk. I am 63 years old and I am still fighting that horrible disease. . There used to be free concerts at Hart Park on certain Holidays. I watched Tex Ritter sing at one concert and I remember his little son was walking around on the stage. He was around 3. Hard to believe both father and son are gone now.
@rentatrip1 Wow...I grew up in Lake Isabella and have driven that road many times...only once at night though. I now live in Los Angeles drive it the opposite way from time to time and see the sign at the mouth of the canyon showing the number of people lost in that relatively small stretch of water. Haunting. I can only imagine what was running through your mind that night.
I was raised on the Kern River, awesome camping, fishing and white water rafting, best end of the ride was at Ewings. Merle Haggard captured the force of this river. Too bad certain people now treat it like a toilet and leave their trash first on the lower now on the upper.
In my youth, I spent many a day at Three Rivers, Kern River, and that special hide-a-way at the base of Mount Shasta where the spring rushes pure & clear and the Blue Jays land at your feet ready to be fed. I have home movies of my family floating Lake Shasta. Beautiful times. I also recall the hurt inflicted by Merle's careless disrespect. He may not recall inviting my husband and I for a visit but, I rode for 3 days from Nashville to CA to be turned away at his door. I'll never forget.
This is where I was born. Raised in Oildale like Merle. First thing I can remember is "NEVER SWIM IN THE RIVER" and it was the first thing I did as soon as I could. lol Thank you Merle and thank you CherokeeGeema for loading it.
i was 20 ,it was 1973 , driving up to Lake Isabella - from off Hwy 5 out of L.A.- the windy road that clinks to the rocky face of the gorge on the lower Kern.... It was late Friday Night I was headed to Woofford Heights - as I drove , looking down into the dark black of the Kern ...I saw head-lights on deep in the water ... Really, back then no cell phones all I could do was drive on, God I thought , that just happened because the battery & lights are still on ,
In the United States, Bakersfield is now the second only to Los Angeles for the most badly polluted air. Gosh, I remember when it was just a little truckstop out in the middle of nowhere. The only thing there was to do there was get gas and go to Buck Owens bar. (Which I was to young to do.)
ya .. when I was a kid the preachers son drowned in the Kern. I myself have never and will never willingly set foot in the Kern River.. but it is beautiful.
i miss all the old rounders from ottawa there all dead r ip jimmy smith toughest man ever to sleep outside in ottawa ontario canada i hope there all nice and warm in heaven with a never empty bottle of plastic supreme merry christmass!
Been going to Kern river since Late 1950's. Where did you get the old pics of the house? I remember back then it used to have a sign calling it Hag"s Place
Very simple yet this hits the soul because that's where it came from. ☘
So many good times on that river. Family reunions. Fishing. Swimming camping. Kids. Thanks merle haggard. You have been my favorite singer for 30 years plus.
It hurts so much that he is gone. I shall always listen to his songs. Grateful for all the good tunes he left us.
Flo Bybee it still hurts man, it still hurts. I'll never forget the emptiness of that day as long as I live. was like losing a family member.

Well then, you've likely been to Buttonwillow.
Yup. Hear of many summer drownings in Kern river too-alcohol fueled night swimming seems to be a good way to cool down.
Unbelievable voice and amazing way of making you feel the words of his songs.

Today, April, 6, Merle Haggard died. Rest in Please, Merle, you've earned the rest.
