if you want to step down the voltages from 12V to 5V you can use simple 7805 voltage regulator ic

That's not going to work with most newer USB adapters... Good idea tho if the transformer can withstand the higher voltage

this lousy idea has been done before by clowns. Wattage is halved, does not work well, very poor DC waveform.

one zener diode is 1N4148 marking on it and other is 5V you have to replace 5V zener diode with 12V
