Makes me almost want to cry. That's so so good. Intense feeling and emotion. I'm taking up the guitar again at 68, and if I ever got to playing that piece I'd die a happy man.
Andrew Rozycki dear Andrew I’m 78 and two years that I’m studying guitar and even tu tune the guitar it is like praying I wonderful to try, and the best to enjoy the process
One of my favorite pieces of all time. I can still remember the first time I ever heard a performance of Dowland's, Now oh Now I Needs Must Part. It was 20+ years ago. I was sitting in my room on a grey day in Ceres, CA listening to KUOP public radio out of Stockton, CA. As the song played I was completely transfixed. It stabbed me straight through the heart--simultaneously the saddest and most beautiful thing I'd ever heard.
Ich habe mir von etlichen Interpreten die Frog Galliard angehört. Christoph Denoth ist ein wahrer Meister seines Faches. So ausdrucksstark und perfekt gespielt. Einfach nur traumhaft.
This is probably one of the best rendition of Dowland's Frog Galliard that I have heard on the classical guitar. I know this Dowland piece very well and it is more often performed on the lute. Well done, Chrisoph Denoth!
Liked this so much I actually bought the CD. Thanks Mr. Denoth. Good rendition of 25 of Dowlands lute pieces arranged for classical guitar. IMO, "Frog Galliard" clearly stands out as the best of them. Lady Hundsson's Puffe and King of Denmark galliard were also standouts, in my opinion. Excellent short bio on John Dowland in the liner notes (in multiple languages, of course), too.
So many musicians have drawn inspiration from this song. some obvious ones are pachelbels Canon in D and Uematsu's Melodies of Life (Final fantasy 9) I dont think they intentionally stole the riffs or anything. I just think they were rocking out to this song for so long that the melodies were stuck in their head and they build their own songs off of it.
Do you have any tips for learning this piece? I'm trying to learn it for State Solo and Ensemble, and it's really difficult. I feel like I may have bitten off more than I can chew.
It's split into eight bars. Learn it eight bars at a time then another eight bars. That's how I'm learning it...I recon it'll take me six months - maybe more. And also look after your nails! The trouble with real life is that nails split/ brake ! and then you're buggered!
I was thinking the same thing when I first heard this piece, I knew Pachelbel listened this piece and wrote this after that Melody line at around 0:46.
@@Rusli1659LPSoldier From where do you know that Pachelbel listened to this piece? When I heard this piece the first time I also instantly had Pachelbels Canon in D in mind
@@rainidrops In 1690's he listened to this piece through the vinyl but he got an Idea to write the piece after Frog Galliard with the chord progression in slow tempo around frog galliard part 0:46.
Strangely enough the guitar sounds a bit "lute- like" to me. It might depend on the recording. It is not at all a disgrace of course but I wonder who built this guitar and wether if this were his intentions to have it sound this way....
Traditionally concert classical guitars have shellac/french polish finishes. Those at least start off as a shiny/gloss finish, although I think the neck wears into more of a matte texture with playing.
The problem is that Henry VIII took this piece, re-write it, and said, "why don't I write some lyrics about how a woman rejected me, and she only considers me as a friend"
Its supposed to be a "galliard". . .ie accompaniment to a DANCE. If you play it too "dramatically" Queen Elizabeth (whose favorite dance was the galliard) will have you thrown into the dungeon in the Tower of London!

indeed; I wrongly thought till now that this beautiful piece was actually intended FOR lute... But this guitar rendition is stunning

absolutely beautiful phrasing and such a warm sound from the cedar top
C'est toujours super , Dowland , et pour la guitare , une si belle façon de faire sonner l'instrument.Merci pour le partage.
Merci pour votre commentaire 😊
I was surprised how beautiful this sounds on the classical guitar! Has to be played by a master like Mr. Denoth though!
Just beautiful.

Very nice!
very good i like the final note to

Very similar to Greensleeves
Fine playing.

is that a gloss finish guitar or a satn finished guitar ?

I think pachelbel heard this a lot

those must be some expensive gut strings wow
We get it, strings are made of intestines.
@@diceandcards8272 that's not the idea, listen to the sound quality, I'd be really surprised if they're nylon strings. It sounds like a lute
Why i find the intro cringy ?
coz it is
HAHAHAHA
Because John Dowland was the original emo sad boy
😂
robert downey jr can play guitar?
a bit more practice and this bloke could get quite good.
seriously Christoph really inspires me. I've been working on this piece for a year now - I'm almost there. Well... I will be in a few more years!
Pretentious and way too slow. Reminiscent of frogs? Frogs on their deathbeds.
Hes not being dramatic enough for my taste. DISLIKE.

too much ritardando and arrpegiated chords...
