Plague I worked fast food for 3 years and it’s just a depressing place. The managers are usually what causes it because they have a large incentive to micromanage and they’re usually awful leaders. Very oppressive environment. Also the customers are usually not that great to you either and they get mad because a lot of orders are fucked up due to the pressure to be as fast as possible with getting orders through. Everyone around me was depressed because this was the best job they could do at the time and so I always did my best to make the most of it. I always played music out loud even to the customers despite the managers telling me not to and gave out free food all the time, especially if it seemed like a family was struggling financially. I would fuck around and make jokes and it really made the hours go by fast and I built friendships I’ll never forget. Anything in life Is what you make of it :)

This video reminds me of a scene from the Movie Walking Life (2001) by Richard Linklater. You have all the traits of someone who would be featured in a scene from a movie like that, your mental capacity and pacing; analytical abilities, philosophy, how you look, all that needs to be done is for you to add some dream like orchestra music and to rotoscope the video. Good work man!

I don’t want to put to much of a burden on you, because your message is already out there in a sense. But please continue, we need this kind of rhetoric now more than ever
Love the videos. This is America in a nutshell. As the pandemic shows, our economy is built on consumerism. It creates jobs and the flow of money drives the gears of this country. Agreed that being blind to the fact and forming bad consumerist habits is bad, but being mad at it isn't necessarily the solution. The healthy individual who works out and eats right is still a consumer and may just as well be in the same memetic spell as the one who eats fast food and plays games all day. I think it comes down to the habits and the conscious decisions which steer your habits.
Well said. It's important to note that even habits perceived as generally "good" are not so necessarily clear cut. Think of a graduate student working on their master's degree while working a full time job. They are grinding away for better future employment/financial opportunities, but perhaps only sleeping 3 or 4 hours a night. Is the damage being done to their body from prolonged sleep deprivation worth the financial benefits that they will see in the future? What about the frequent gym goer who has lost a lot of body fat and built an impressive muscular physique, but the heavy dead lifting and squatting they're doing is creating joint issues that they will have to contend with in the future. Life is a series of trade-offs, a careful balancing act.
R C moderation is key. To lift to heavy so were you sacrifice good form. Do not work so much were you sacrifice your health. Mentally and physically, life is about balance, not just “trade-offs”.
Hey man, I stumbled across this video on my RUclips feed and I really felt a connection with what you said about your problems. All I can say is thanks a lot for sharing, as it takes a lot of bravery to put yourself out there on such a public place as RUclips. Keep working out, get your diet in check, sleep well and stay away from alcohol and cigarettes and you will achieve whatever health goals you have set for yourself. You've got this, brother. Further, I really connected with the idea you raised about monotony and just being another cog in the machine; my worst fear is to be something like this and you verbalised it brilliantly. Pardon my gushing but you provide a refreshing take on who we are as Western society and a nice change from clickbait and subscriber comment challenges
I'm just going to become the most unpredictable person ever and then randomly follow a pattern for a few months and go back to chaotic energy just to keep people on their toes.
Been going on a spree of your old videos and it's great to see how you stuck to your word about getting healthy. I want to make some wisecrack about libidinal energies and what not, but I'll just say that I love the content, long may it continue, it's given me plenty to think about and help make changes in my own life. Cheers dude.
I honestly just started watching your channel a couple days ago, and I have to say I'm drawn to your content because I feel like I know you. I don't, but there is something so familiar about you, your mannerisms, your cadence, your physical appearance everything about you is strangely familiar. I really enjoy your content!!!!!
This is by far my favorite video you have made. A lot of your others ones feel a little to "floaty" and I don't really know how to apply what you said, but this video is really eye opening. Maybe because its longer and more focused on your own experiences so its easier to anchor the ideas you are talking about and understand.
This is one of the best videos you’ve done. It gives us desperately needed perspective on ourselves, (and the game we find ourselves in) because you were willing to put yourself in an uncomfortable position. The scope is broad, but very visceral to an American audience. Thank you for your candor.

The fact that you’re not a vector for mental and physical well being makes it more meaningful and that you bring us these thoughts and points of views on topics and discussions that we all struggle with, you’re viewers, its great. I never see you as holier than thou I see you more as another human struggling with the same sort of things I struggle with. Its almost a full never ending cycle because the idea that we consume these unnatural forms of entertainment instead of pure natural ways of passing the time is for me almost the same as watching your content because I find the escapist comfort in your content. Not saying your content is as unnatural and consumerist as other forms of entertainment you’ve mentioned before. I dont know its a strange thing the mind and the idea of ideas and theories themselves. Maybe we’re all overthinking shit and I dont know why i wasted all this time getting these thoughts out while i sat and had tacobell.

"All fat is baby fat" . . . This is the fantastic insight I expect from MemeAnalysis. I love this video. After seeing your videos later on and seeing how you have gotten yourself into much better shape, I think it is fantastic that you are setting an example and showing that the harmful repetition that our society forces on us can be broken out of. Keep up the good work.
I found the points in this video to be shockingly accurate to the experiences in life I have been going through the last couple of years. Though I have physically never been overweight, the psychological idea of repetition and consumerism being a kind of layer of fat protecting us from uncertainty is something I related to a lot. Last year was my first year at college, and as I became part of a social group in my dorm, we established a tradition of "Chick-Fil-A Friday", where we established a rigid routine of walking to the on campus Chick-Fil-A each Friday at 6pm and eating dinner together. This repetition, along with playing video games together, became the glue that held our social group together. When my second year of college began, I moved out to an apartment off campus, and I began to see my friends from the dorm a lot less, however, the one tradition that remained was Chick-Fil-A Friday. Now that the virus has put all social aspects of college on hold, I haven't spoken with anyone from that group of friends, with the exception of a couple who asked for help with homework. This video has helped me see this whole process as gaining / losing psychological fat, where in this case the fat is the comfort and security of being a part of a social group with its regularity and rituals. Being a part of a group of friends was like comfort food, and with the comfort comes laziness, as I was only really ever productive in the times I would take to distance myself, go to my own room and study or create something. The process of becoming more isolated from everybody has been uncomfortable to say the least, as losing weight does not come without effort and discomfort. However, being isolated during the pandemic has also presented me with the opportunity to create things, as I have been able to work on small coding projects, upload a few videos to youtube, clean my room, and create some music. With my online classes ending in a week, I will have even more time to myself to produce things, which in my mind is the opposite of consumerism. With this free time, I have to avoid the temptation of becoming addicted to another symbolic fast food, which is that of mindlessly scrolling through social media and watching youtube videos, which will make me fat psychologically, if not physically. Anyway, to anyone else who is in this comment section because of addiction to the internet and RUclips, especially if you feel socially isolated right now, download some free software and start watching some tutorials and teach yourself a new skill. If you want to make music there's FL Studio, if you want to 3d model get blender, if you want to be a youtuber get your phone camera and start recording. There's really so many things you can learn, and the stuff you make at first doesn't even need to be good, as long as you are creating something rather than consuming, you're already winning against the unfulfillment that this video talks about. If we keep on repeating acts of consumption, we get comfortable and gain weight, whether it's physical or not, but when we repeat acts of creativity, we lose weight in the sense that these actions become easier, more fulfilling and more impactful to others. Thank you for this video, I hope it inspires myself and others to reflect on the repetition in our lives and how it affects us.
On the contrary, I find your honesty attractive, in spite of the fact that I understand my relationship to you is purely parasocial. I will not hear words from you directed towards me personally, yet I still learn from your perspective. Thank you for doing this. My family hit some rough times and food became very scarce in the house, never starving but for years always borderline manlnourished. I would ask for small donations of bits of food my friends lunch when at school, resorting to ketchup sandwiches, having sleep for dinner. All the things my fellow poor kids probably remember. The hard times ended but the mentality of food scarcity remained. I find it very hard to not constantly be eating something. I've definitely learned to control it better and cut out MOST of the junk food (addictions die hard). Fortunately I'm still fairly young and never really gained much weight (even though the amounts I would eat a day when I was at my worst were just...disgusting really). It definitely is a cycle of stress -> seeking comfort -> eating bad/too much -> stress.

Neurosis and the urge for repetition, where does it come from? I often find myself unable to stop doing something, be it watching YT vids, playing a video game, anything really, it's very easy for me to not want to stop an activity until I'm utterly exhausted or too bored with it.
Technically, it comes from too high levels of serotonin in the brain. Dopamine is the opposite. Novelty. Creativity. Our stressful and monotonous lives promote serotonin dominance and thus, repetition and, eventually, depression.

In response to the message given at 16:02 : Nothing is learned of sickness and dysfunction from the healthy and normal. One can say they know something of it, but never understand it without truly experiencing it themselves. You, of all people, are more qualified to speak on such a subject because you have experienced the normalization and neurosis of having food as a safety net, in the same way that I can speak on cigarettes being mine. What we do right is understanding that we are that way, that we are suffering and sick with these things, and work to improve ourselves. We know we would be failing ourselves if we didn't even try.

In Lasch's "Culture of Narcissism" he talks a little about how the previous affliction was Neurosis while the current affliction is Narcissism. You are totally in line with that analysis because of they way you see the repetition in fast food and match it to a Neurotic mindset. Fast food is born out of an Neurotic era (think Post World War 2, Boomers, Howard Hughes) and reflects their Neurotic sensibilities. In the coming future, the Narcissist will interact with fast food differently, not from a vehicle but from a phone and a delivery app.

Two weird beliefs I had as a kid were tied to McDonalds. Back then it wasn't quite as ubiquitous, but was a household name. Belief number one was that Ronald McDonald would give me extra fries if I was a good boy. And that explains the fries in the bottom of the bag. He was hiding them there because I'd been good. Belief two was that Ronald somehow knew which happy meal toys I had. I think I coincidentally lost one at some point, and my very next happy meal was that toy. One time I put this to the test by hiding a toy to "lose" it and seeing if I got a new one. I don't think it worked, and it was something of a "Santa isn't real" moment for me.

@@plaguex1 I highly doubt that's why she's in a bad mood.
@@Opethfeldt still a miserable job to me. Maybe not to her tho I guess. It seems to me every fast food worker is absolutely miserable. Then again I have a hard time reading people.
@@plaguex1 No, you're right. Fast food and retail are hell. If someone is friendly toward you at one of these places odds are its because company policy mandates it. Having your own actual emotions and thoughts isn't representing the companies thoughts and emotions, because remember, the company is a person too! And while your on the job, you are the company!
*sobs in retail peasant*
Lol, you're describing in detail how the advertisers done their psychology homework before setting their sights on consumers.

@@MemeAnalysis yes, Adam Curtis right?

MemeAnalysis, in a livestream I asked about the death drive & you told me to read "Beyond the pleasure principle". I read it and didn't get it. After this video, I finally understand. Thank you very much.
My friend: "Do you like Wendy's?"
My response:
I had a similar experience. I had some childhood trauma and food became my comfort drug.
Im obese for the same reasons however ive lost 80 pounds doing a keto diet, would recommend.
I just noticed, when you showed the fries, that the word 'MOM' appears subliminally in the logo on Wendy's collar. Very apt given your description of repetition as comfort.

Probably the most important video I’ve seen in a while. Please please please continue to believe in your self and your message. I desperately needed this. I don’t want to put to much of a burden on you, because your message is already out there in a sense. But please continue, we need this kind of rhetoric now more than ever
The Network 1976: "I´m a human being goddammit. My life has value"
This is straight truth man.
Your channel is amazing, you should be very proud.
Fantastic video as always, interesting and touching, I wish you the best for your health goal.
And let's break some chains
sounding fatphobic bro
I do all the same but with depression related subjects, “you can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness”
I like these. The going into a modern toy store to look at current toy trends. And this. Analyzing American pop culture and trend. Cool stuff
It's the release of endorphins. Sugar massively spikes endorphins. Drugs also massively spike endorphins.
Hey
I dont know if people have noticed this but where Wendy's collar is it says MoM. 13:22
Its a nuance for you to associate with Wendy's food with home cooked moms meals.
I've also noticed that their burger wrapper has the flower of life on it
The fact that you’re not a vector for mental and physical well being makes it more meaningful and that you bring us these thoughts and points of views on topics and discussions that we all struggle with, you’re viewers, its great. Maybe we’re all overthinking shit and I dont know why i wasted all this time getting these thoughts out while i sat and had tacobell.
dude... you're a great guy. Very insightful and eloquent. The way you express your ideas is truly admirable. You're what I internally think and feel but I am unable to let it out due to my lack of eloquence I guess. I hope you are okay, and I wish you the best in whatever your heart chooses to seek out.
It's good to see you lost weight king
Recurrent or not, it has helped me continue to push myself, make the changes. Like any human I relapse into habit, yet your words help. They give me courage. Please do not cease what you do.
Ngl this is one of the better youtube videos I've ever watched
18:41 - 22:32 was weirdly cinematic, like everything he walked past was timed so perfectly and it kinda felt like the big message was being dropped on me at the end of a 3 hour long movie lmao. Love your videos man keep up the good work.

Neurosis and the urge for repetition, where does it come from?
I often find myself unable to stop doing something, be it watching YT vids, playing a video game, anything really, it's very easy for me to not want to stop an activity until I'm utterly exhausted or too bored with it.
Visit my Instagram @mememanhere....I think we can both create something and not get bored too
Technically, it comes from too high levels of serotonin in the brain. Dopamine is the opposite. Novelty. Creativity. Our stressful and monotonous lives promote serotonin dominance and thus, repetition and, eventually, depression.
This was a seriously relatable video. Thanks for being honest and open about our common struggle.
I appreciate the honesty man. Rooting for you!
I just know this was hard from the first line to speak to the last click for uploading. You have indeed been candid and honest. It sucks to hate yourself every time you fell for the fast food or failed the discipline of just taking a walk. (just talking for myself here) Among you is almost half of all European peoples in the planet. You made your analysis really technical so to say, and it gave me insight. Thank you for this video. You got balls man. I wish you great health
Thank you for giving us insight into the fast food culture and being so candid with your own personal life. You seem to have grown exponentially from trauma and it is admirable and something that it is unfortunate that more people can't do. I enjoy you videos, I love the content please never stop.

In response to the message given at 16:02 :
Nothing is learned of sickness and dysfunction from the healthy and normal.
Thank you very much for the honesty. I can apply same logic and psychology to why I have carb addiction and me going to the bakery to get "my fix".

I know this isnt gonna be seen (and no that isnt a cry for likes) but this helped me. In a way its ironic actually. You spoke about the mundanity in repetition and seeing others exist alongside ones self and the comfort it brings. Listening to your analysis of ourselves gave me a comfort in knowing I have someone who feels the same. I think thats a bit funny. I wont ramble about my feelings or how fucked up we all are but thank you. I feel at ease in our current situation and I feel better equipped to tackling the issues we all have. Thank you. These words meant more to me than you know

This covid shit is making this a reality. I'm no better cuz I have been doing that too. We are reaching the end times.

My high school sociologist teacher made a good point that if humans fell into a dark age and came back out they could very likely conclude that the buildings with the big arches and service counters are our places of worship or ritual. Why else would these buildings be the same everywhere around the world? We must be practicing a universal religion!
Hey mate, this was awesome. The past month has been rough for me, the best I can describe it is severe neurosis. Not bad enough to be depression, but endless deliberation. I haven't been able to live my regular live and work towards the things I want, and it's been bad. But this video was good and insightful.
You've helped me a lot to understand many of the things around me and inside my mind, to the point that pushed me on working on myself. I'm glad you're also helping yourself towards the path of being a better you, I'm proud of you my Man 🤝
