I'm a Leica shooter and got the Ricoh a year ago for cycling as well. I now use the Ricoh for so many more things than cycling! Almost replaces my Leica
Hey Justin, I’m also a long time cyclist/photog. And yes, carrying a M240 with 90mm Cron in a thinktank sling does make my neck hurt after four hours in the saddle. The images are reliably good so it’s worth it. I can stop riding, swing the bag around in front, put on the wrist strap, turn the camera on and remove the lens cap in less than 15 seconds, which is good for my workflow. Maybe the 500 gram weight difference I should consider more closely. Loved the results from your Ricoh! Glad to see I’m not the only one out there riding/shooting.
i’ve been eyeing this camera as a possible bike ride p&s but it’s so hard to find examples of people actually using this camera on bike to take pictures of other cyclists and not just stopping to take still landscape shot. so thank you, you just sold me on this one 🙏🏼
I take a Canon G15 point and shoot camera with me when I run in the mornings, because it takes three exposure bracketed images, and gives me three Canon RAW files, that when blended in Lightroom gives me an image that with a darker more colorful sky that looks more like what I remembered the scene to have looked like, than the images my phone gives me, and without using my phone battery juice.
I am using my RIcoh Gr 2 for every single ride. Whenever I take my DSLR, I am taking so less photo. And with Ricoh I easily cover the story without even stopping. And Ricoh has an amazing video quality too. One of my multiday hiking is all documented with Ricoh.
Im also a photographer/biker! ;) I know you normally shoot 35mm so Im curious how you like the 28mm field of view and if you have considered or have tried the GRiiix with the 40mm. Im mainly a Leica Q2 shooter but want something 35 equivalent as a complement to the 28 and to be able to mix it up and challenge myself at times. But I tend to shoot wider and am thinking 40 would be too narrow FOV for me. Just curious about your thoughts as predominantly a 35mm shooter. thanks!
28mm is ok , it’s just slightly too wide for me personally James. However if I had to choose a 28mm or a 40mm, I’d probably go 28mm although I wouldn’t love it for portraits.
I do this as well but It's in a water-resistant case! It's not weather-sealed and not cheap to let it get ruined by moisture from the environment or from sweat. The GoPro can also be used for shooting while riding situations. If I want to use the GR III, I stop to take photos. I also recently dropped the GR and it got scratched pretty bad, but it still works no problem. It is a tough camera but I dunno if it will survive a bike crash. haha
Love the idea of very lightweight camera for shorter rides, so convenient. Normally when I am on longer rides, I am probably doing bikecamping so I have bags and cart on my bike, that’s when I prefer to bring along my Pentax DSLR with 2 zoom lenses. They are rugged & weatherproof. I just make sure they are easily accessible right in front of my handlebar every time I want to shoot something.
Given the primary use, I don't think there's a better camera on the market. Of the fixed lens compacts, that's the lightest and smallest one. The Fuji X100V is very tempting but considerably bigger than the GR and not as pocket-able. There's also the Sony RX100 series, which are more versatile with their zoom lenses but I'd rather have a prime and a bigger sensor any day :)
I cycle with my GR3 all the time. Completely agree. If in a jersey back pocket, I do try to protect from sweat and the elements by leaving it in its case or a plastic sandwich bag. I recommend keeping it in the middle pocket in case you crash. Better chance of escaping damage. I’m embarrassed to say I speak from experience here. I also have GR1s film camera. Same form factor and I cycle with that as well.
Love VN (have crossed that same bridge near Hanoi?) and a new GR owner too. Will take GR when I ride the Mickelson Trail in S Dakota USA next year, and leave all my SONY gear at home.
Hey! Snack pouch for carrying the ricoh is a good match, can put some battery and extra cards, on the hand, wheaten resistant etc....I don't like take cameras and cellphone on the jersey because of the salt from swet and humidity and the most important: confort 😅
Out on long runs with a small running vest, or on bike. I take a Sony ZV1 good little camera with gloves mind is a fiddle, but they all are. But if like taking photos then doesn’t really matter. Nice one Sam
love the ricoh but my only problem with it is when i go riding , really scared of bad weather . my place in malaysia sabah borneo sometimes always rain storm , so no weather seal is really scary
Was looking into this camera but still not sure, because of the lack of weather sealing and even salt of my own sweat. So keep using my iPhone to this point
@@dhaug I feel like the Q would be a close 2nd for camera to carry on rides but I agree, the way that lens sticks out makes me nervous, plus the price tag $$$$.
I don’t have a Ricoh GR, but I do have a Canon G7x (which is great for photography and for video work). But, like others have said, in reality, my iPhone 12 is probably the camera that I carry with me most often. It is lightweight, has great quality, great lenses, and just works. I also own a Leica M9, but like you, I don’t think that it is particularly suitable for cycling! I am concerned not only about the weight, but also the value of the camera (if I should fall, or drop it - yikes! That would be a tragedy!) I have also taken my Fuji X100 on multi day rides (when I have luggage, and so can put the camera into a frame bag or panniers). But, I would say, iPhone 12, and then Canon G7x - oh and of course, like you, I also use a GoPro. Thanks for the great video.
@@digitaldion Thank for sharing your set up Dion, that is a good system. I just upgraded to an iPhone 12 Pro Max last week and I'm pretty impressed with the quality. I have a GR3 which I take for cycling but sometimes swap it out for an RX100 VII. Even smaller and has EVF, Tilt screen, amazing Sony autofocus and 24-200 equiv lens. That camera is a great option as well, it’s just slightly thicker than the GR3 I think but fantastic image quality.

I feel like it’s the ultimate cycling camera that doesn’t get any love. What kind of riding do you do?
Leica CL; Elmarit 18mm 2.8; Ziplock bag; easy fit in middle jersey pocket. You're welcome. (Thanks for a great channel)
Thanks Christopher, great set up, and thanks for watching.
Yes please do more stuff like that. Almost fell off my chair by this outstanding picture quality 😮 and the cycling story
Thank you for watching and for taking the time to comment. The quality on the sensor is exceptional.
I’m Dutch so I always cycle because that’s our transport. And have a gr and the wide angle and it’s a lovely little camera
I’d love to be cycling in the Netherlands ,hopefully one day :).
Everything here is build around the bike so it’s so nice. The hovenring is a very nice example. It’s a very special cycling bridge (very beautiful)
Great Video. Thank you for sharing cycling photo advice

Thanks Jason, yeah it fits everywhere:)
Great pictures- and beautiful bike! Orbea Orca?
Thanks, it's an Orbea Terra, gravel bike. I started a little cycling channel recently. ruclips.net/channel/UCRtfc1baKBKMjThFFBKuVaw
Thanks for the insights. Also, I've got those same Lake Cycling shoes, albeit much more worn, but the color is 👌
I bought pair of their mountain bike shoes as well, just love the way they fit.
am using my epl7 + pancake pana 20mm f1.7 for my rides, compact and suits my budget!
Sounds like a great set up John.

You'd dig the Ricoh or something comparable, nice for a little top tube bag or even in your jersey pocket it works well.
@@AskMOTT Agree. I have been checking out on the GR series, pretty sure I will love it alongside my GXR. My GRD experience was so great!
I recommend the mettle speed strap, btw. Means I don’t need to freak out about dropping the camera.
I agree. Used the mettle strap to carry a Sony rx100 across the Pyrenees recently. Camera always at the ready 👍

Ha ha, thanks for watching TJ.
The frame bag looks like you can easily fit the M10. Or almost any camera. Even a Hasselblad X1D.
It's a pretty decent sized bag, actually pretty awesome for people like me who like to go out prepared for rides :).
I love your studio - this window - yes I like the GR 3 too

Totally agree Tiago, the key for me is how lightweight it is and I love the overall aesthetic of the Ricoh.
Best alternative is a Fuji xf10 but it’s still a bit thicker, although much better priced.

Too big and heavy for cycling and doesn't fit in the jersey pocket.

You can get an optical viewfinder for the GRiii. It may not be 100% accurate but it'll be close to the image you want each time taking a shot.
