- Wow, Freeze Drying Red Hots was a bit trickier than I expected! However the end result is quite good. Nothing like a little experimentation to get it right! Using my oven and Candy Mode on my HarvestRight Freeze Dryer I get it figured out.

Thank you for this video
Thank you for watching :)
Great video. I love to put red hots in my diy instant Russian tea. These freeze dried red hots might work better in my tea. Thank you for doing the red hots video. I wonder how licorice would do? 😬
I don’t think licorice works… however if heated in oven until just before melted and then thrown in the freeze dryer… would need to play with oven preheat temp to get it just right…
No freezing? I'm not sure how to do this on medium freeze dryer
As long has you change the temp on your machine to 150 and have Candy Mode (updated software on older machines pre installed on newer) this video walks you through it.
How long are you preheating in the oven?
@@SmoochiesCandies that is something to play with, from ovens to freeze dryers there are too many variables from machine to machine… however you should be able to smash with your finger easily, but the red hots aren’t melted globs either
Someone in my freeze dry group mentioned that it could void the warranty oven heating your candy first so I emailed Harvest Right directly. She said you CAN Pre Warm your candy but should not pre warm on the Harvest right trays.... just throwing that out there ;-)
Thanks. I do think that temp matters, if I am going much above 200 I do not use my harvest right trays.
See I've been using cookie sheets I didn't want the wrapped tray I have a large. It's upstairs lol so now I will try. Tyty
that machine heats top faster as heat raises. sad .. such a different in so small a space
Yes, there is definitely a difference between machine sizes, the number of trays between the newer pro-models and the slightly older machines. Candy really is an artform in freeze drying as what works for one person isn't a guarantee it will work for you. And then even within your machine some trays will work differently than other based on where they are at in your tray rack.
Can’t you just warm trays in freeze dryer
I have found a warmer temp is necessary, the freeze dryer will only warm to 150
