- A time lapse art video of me making a wood burning of a Dragon. I originally did this artwork for a youtube art video competition over on Jazza's youtube channel, but I did not end up getting featured over there so I'm posting it here now :) It's 16"x20" which is the largest burning I've ever done, and it took me about 15 hours to burn.
The burner I use is a Razertip SS-D10:

Beautiful work and beautiful design. Also loved the voice over. People who feel the need to create usually also feel the need to be working with several projects at the same time and different materials. At least I also feel that need.

I thought your dragon turned out well and I agree, the eye is really good. I did have to chuckle over your comment about this taking a long time. I thought given the size of the piece, you got it burned in rather quickly. Guess it's all a matter of perspective.
Oh thank you! Yeah, I guess I see I lot of people who create really large burnings and I usually do rather small ones, so I figured I must be slow lol. Like you said though its all perspective :)

Love it! Resembles exactly what I imagine a dragon would look like. And just a side of constructive criticism, you should add more of that beautiful soft texture around the eye, onto the whole face. Great work all in all!

Way to go !!! Very nice. I have been a professional artist for over 27 years, now retired and the only advice I can give you is to finish your started pieces. Then you can have the discipline to finish every piece. This will heighten your craft because you will learn how to work around the I don't feel like finishing this right now phase. If you don't, your skill level will be off. You grow as an artist, so you will be better by the time you go back k to it, if you go back to it. I'm sharing this because you are very good. 🙂

I've only heard of wood burning today, and yours was one of the most interesting looking ones that showed up when I searched it up on here.
Seems like a really interesting and beautiful thing to look at, but from the real-time footage in this video... I'm not really sure if I could actually handle something like that, I doubt I'd have even half as much patience as you did, if I tried something like this.
Your sketch was pretty cool, as was the woodburning itself, I really loved the way you shaded the scales in the back to correspond with the light that was coming from the fire breath. And I really enjoyed your humour, I'll probably subscribe tbh, I like watching these kinds of videos from time to time simple to awe myself a bit hahaha.
Also, I really appreciate what you said regarding coronavirus at the start, I know that it might seem dehumanizing, but I really prefer consuming art without people being too preachy behind it.
Anyway... Yea, think that's that, kind of a big comment, people don't usually read these, but I feel like I can't just leave without saying something, just leaving a like on something this magnificent seems a tad bit cheap. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll go binge some of your videos, ta-ta.

In terms of patience you might surprise yourself, wood burning is really the sort of thing where you can just zone out while you’re doing it and listen to a book or a podcast, and smaller ones take less time. Plus it’s cheap cause once you buy a burner you only have to buy wood lol unlike painting where you have to keep buying paint.
Very hard to believe he only heard of woodburning today considering it’s probably the oldest art form in the world woodburning a pyrography’s been around for thousands of years

Yeah, that was one of the things I really liked about my Razertip when I switched from the Walmart burner. It gives you a lot more control :)

they’re not burn marks, it’s eczema. So don’t worry, if you try Pyrography your hands won’t look like mine 😆

I think if you would have added more detail to the teeth and the face it would improve the cohesiveness of the body and the head. Although the flame is meant to decrease the shadows around the face, I think it could have still benefitted a little more to have more definition around the face scales/texture like how you did around the eyes:) A very cool piece!
I wanted to add that I think this would also work with the neck of the dragon nearest to the scales, as it would give depth that the scales would be protruding more than the sleek neck part:)

Very good-looking scales, horns and eye on the dragon! The head area looks flat to me compared to the rest of the body and the flame looks more like a big carrot than fire. I'd suggest adding more shading/color to the front of the body and the face, since now the whole underside of the dragon is the same shade as the burning hot white flame.
Checked out another video (raccoon) and it looks way better, I think the problem here for me is the flame and its effects. Keep up the good work :)
Well done! I do love dragons and hope, with practice, one day to burn one myself! I wonder if there were a few shaded parts in the fire if that would give it more definition. All in all I say brilliant! Thanks for sharing your amazing wood burning skills with us :)

I do think that the fire could be improved with some more shading or something. The reference I was using didn't have a lot of texture and sort of just looked like this but I probably could have found a better one to work from :P Thanks for your comment :)

Hi Hillie, Thank you! I used my spoon shader tip for most of this burning, for some of the line work I used either a knife tip pen or a small spear tip :) hope this helps.

I really miss the smell. I was good at pyrography. People loved what I created. But somewhere I lost the will. Lost the fire that motivated me. I really miss just seeing an image and saying “I want to burn that”. I miss who I was. I wish I can find me again
Hey, it’s never too late to pick up a burner. I find sometimes that I don’t really want to burn either and I have to make myself do it. Then I wonder why I can’t be passionate about it all the time like other artists seem to be. but I’m always glad I did it, even if I have to make myself walk to the table and turn on the camera.
Or maybe if burning isn’t inspiring you right now you can pick up something different, sometimes you’ve done all you can with one medium and it’s time to jump into something new. That’s something that I find can help me when I’m in a rut.
Anyway, I think things have been especially tough for everyone this year, so I hope you’re doing ok.
Consider that who we humans are, is like a multi-layered book or multi-faceted gemstone, where all the layers are just parts of who we are, and that deep inside theres still a core you, who is always the same you, no matter what happens to you in life, and no matter which layers you add/take on, or which layers you hide/forget/ignore.
We tend to define and identify ourselves with different certain aspects of us. For example identifying ourselves as an artist (a pyrographer). And even though we may take on new paths in life, the old layers will always be, both a part of who we where, and a part of who we have become and who we continue to develop ourselves into.
And even though, we at times might feel, that we have lost ourselves on the road, or feel that we have lost a certain aspect/layer of who we once where. The truth is that it will always be there again, if we look closely enough, and, if that is what we truly wish. But sometimes we have to loose ourselves, or become lost, in order to find (re-discover/uncover) ourselves again. (Or to re-invent ourselves again).
There a sweet little story about humans tendency to search/look on the outside for something that is already present on the inside.:
"A person was searching for something on the ground. “What have you lost?” a bypasser asked. “My key,” said the person. So they both went down on their knees and looked for it. After a time the bypasser asked: “Where exactly did you drop it?” “In my own house.” “Then why are you looking here?” “There is more light here than inside my own house."

Have you thought of using A Crocodile as a subject for your Dragon`s head . Obviously they are not exactly alike but the eye`s jaw & teeth can be altered to suit a Dragons features .

@@WildwoodStudio Sarah I forgot to mention, your Dragon was excellent by the way and you have to be commended for the perseverance on your shading around the Dragon. We all find our own ways of doing pyrography but as long as the finished result is to your liking there`s no limits to how we can do the Pyrography , as an example .Some times depending on the Portrait , I alternately mask the main Subject off ,and use a Can of Primer base coat on the wood then when dry I use Matte Black aerosol Spray acrylic paint for the background to substitute the Burn shading . Its much faster and isn`t as tedious .
My own view is there`s no hard and fast "rules" to say everything in your portrait "has to be " solely Burned. I often use Prismacolor Premier pencils too for added color effects . Of course I do also do, only burning in portraits, but I often find on "certain compositions " that I find variation of the input can be substituted ,such as Back ground spraying .Yes its lazy ,but I find it works for me. If you so wanted one can always do say, half inch of surrounding burn shading up to the edges of the Main subject ,then Mask off and blend finish with spraying the rest . It`s all down to how one sees the execution of the portrait is best done . Its the finished result that counts I find.
I`m Just passing on a couple of my varying ways if they can be of any assistance to other Pyrographers to try if they wish to do so .And If anyone tries it and doesn`t like it, then its not done again, so nothing lost.I`d like to add I`m not "Teaching" anything ,just passing on some tips if anyone wants to try it.
Cool, that’s an interesting idea, and it would definitely save time. I like doing art shows and I find it’s easier to explain what I do when I use minimal paint, because some people have never seen Pyrography before. But who knows, maybe I’ll try that on something that’s really big :) I’ve also been thinking about getting a torch for the backgrounds.

How do you get the image on the would use if tracing paper awesome dragon sorry that was suppose to be wood
I used tracing paper to transfer the image. Since this one was drawn smaller than I needed it, I scanned it first and scaled it up on the computer
First of all I want to say how beautiful your piece came out. I’m in awe. I’m just getting into burning and carving and like you I’ve been playing at a lot of different mediums trying to figure out what I’m good at. As and old saying goes I’m good at a lot of things, master of none. Not only that I’m 65 years old and hoping I can teach and old dog new things.
I have 2 question where do you get your reference pictures, the ones that you can reproduce without copy rights and my second question is you mentioned in one of your comment that you get you wood at a craft shop close to you (as I’m in NV it’s a little to far to go) you mentioned that you also got some on line ...I’m interest on doing some larger pieces in the future... could you please link the online company.

Thank you so much :) I’ve been burning sort of off and on for about 10 years, and I’ve seen people improve much faster than I did when they practice more consistently, so I’m sure you’ll get there :)
For pictures, in my opinion, the best way to get photos you can reproduce is to either take them yourself, or to team up with a photographer and ask to use their photos. I have a friend who’s a photographer and he lets me use his photos for free, but you could probably also find someone on Instagram who’s pictures you like and message them to see if they’d let you use their pictures. Some people won’t respond but lots will. I actually did the burning of Tigger the bengal cat based on a photo I found on Instagram and when messaged them and asked to use it in my art they seemed kind of excited about it.
There are also websites with photos that are under a Creative Commons zero copyright like pexels.com but then you’ll run into a thing where you’ll see your reference photos in ad campaigns and other peoples artwork lol. I used to use them more often than I do now, but I still get references from there sometimes. I’m not a lawyer though, so I can’t give real copyright advice.
For the wood, I get it at the above ground art store in Toronto, that’s also where I get it when I buy it online too. They have unfinished basswood painting panels, but their website isn’t great so sometimes I have to search a lot of different things to get their full selection to show up. I’m not sure, but they might ship to where you are. There’s also walnut hollow, they’re a brand that does basswood rounds and things and you can order it on Amazon. But I always prefer to go to a local store because you can look at the wood and choose something smooth and without defects. whereas, when you order it online, there’s always the chance that some of what shows up is unusable. When that happens to me I still keep them because they’re fine for painting, but not for burning. And wood having some small knots or a visible woodgrain is not really a defect lol. Michael’s also has lots of great wooden boards and objects to burn on, but again don’t trust what that stuff looks like online, some of what they have would be terrible to burn on (as I found out when I ordered something from them during COVID)

I do sell my art. In the past I’ve mostly sold through Facebook and at art shows, but I’m working on a website now so I can put some of it up for sale there.
As someone that lives close to Toronto, I am wondering where do you buy the wood canvases you use? Or do you purchase them online?
I buy them at the above ground art store downtown Toronto near OCAD university. I go there specifically because they have unfinished cradled basswood panels. They were closed for a bit during COVID, so I ordered a bunch online and the shipping was pretty fast :) I still prefer to go in person though because I’m picky about the wood grain lol

I don’t have much smoke as I burn because I don’t turn my burner up hot enough to get smoke. You don’t need to have the burner that hot to get darker tones, and it’s gives you more control to burn at slightly lower temperatures.

Lots of hours here. I do this type of art for a buisness. I might suggest that some of your lines should have been thicker to get more depth to it and I would have gone a head and added color. I think these things would have really made your piece stand out more. But all and all a nice piece
Thanks :) I don’t add colour to my wood burning very often, but I’ve been doing it more lately. Burning takes so long that I don’t want to cover it, especially since just doing a painting is much faster. I appreciate the suggestion though.
