    The support system actually debuted in Gaiden, but it was limited to Celica and Alm only; if you placed them both near each other, they'd gain a significant CRIT boost.

    I'm actually a big fan of the dismount feature. Any experienced fan will tell you that a horse breaks nearly every game thery're in in half. They're usually the dominant class in just about every game they're in. Dismounting is a pretty clever way to break up that dominance, horses are still great but they shine brightest during outdoors maps. So instead of fielding a squad primarily composed of cavalry, you're encouraged to experiment with other team compositions in order to have a solid indoors team

    • @GamesBrained
      @GamesBrained  5 лет назад +9

      That does make sense, but do you think that cavaliers are really dominant or OP in FE3? I didn't, plus it also means that there's no reason not to promote a PR since their RES bonus is going to be pointless compared to a DR's enhanced stats. Maybe it's because I'm playing the FE's in order but I haven't felt that a nerf was needed for them yet. Thanks for the comment it got me thinking

    • @NotAFakeName1
      @NotAFakeName1 5 лет назад +15

      @@GamesBrained they aren't quite as dominant in archanea. Non mounted units actually have relatively decent movement in the games, mounted units are generally locked to lances, and they hadn't been given the busted stuff yet. Plus systems like the dismount and sword lock when dismounted serve to nerf them. Still, having more movement is better than having less, and too often mounted units meet the benchmarks needed to hit reliably and kill enemies in one round of combat just as easily as nonmounted units, making the nonmounted units almost redundant.

    Yayayay. That was great! i love this game so much and you did the entry so much justice just like you did with all your previous reviews. My favorite parts of these are your plot synopsis. i think you always do a great job with balancing the amount of plot points/brevity so a person who's unfamiliar wouldn't get lost. The next entry adds tons of staples to the series, the most famous being the weapons triangle, but i personally think the biggest thing it brings to the table is the advent of the level/exp coefficient.

    Dismounting is supposed to be a nerf to cavalry, who usually get ahead of your other units and trivialize them. Forced dismounting indoors is supposed to be for balance. Also no mention of how shards affect stat growths?

    • @boredomkiller99
      @boredomkiller99 4 года назад +5

      This right here, dismounting was meant to nerf mounted units in two ways. One, they can not access swords while mounted, this is a big deal due to lances weighing a lot more and Cavaliers and paladins tended to start with average speed at best meaning that if you wanting to use your mount back to back you were not going to be doubling as much. This made the sword fighter units much stronger and snipers as well especially with the nerf to javalins and bows just being much more useful.Two this change was also meant to make mounted units worse indoors so you don't just use all fliers and mounts all the time.

    I actually think the dismounting system is a very good idea. Fire Emblem has always had a struggle with balancing mounted units, considering the immense benefits of having a mount. Dismounting is an interesting way of handling this problem, but is definitely at its worse in this game. I actually think it works great in FE5 because of how it works in tandem with the fatigue system. The fatigue system actually gives merit to not deploying units for certain chapters. For example, if you have been working Finn to death over a series of outdoor maps, you can just not deploy him in an indoor map, allowing him to recover without hurting your army. It really rewards the player for planning ahead and optimizing which units to bring in each map.

    • @GamesBrained
      @GamesBrained  5 лет назад +2

      I've noticed that everyone who likes the dismounting system keeps talking about how it works well in later games. In FE1 - 3, I felt that either the inability to enter certain terrain, or mediocre stats on mounted characters kept them from being over-relied on. It sounds like the dismounting system will be more useful or measured in the future than I felt it was in this one.

    • @jotarokujo4754
      @jotarokujo4754 5 лет назад +7

      @@GamesBrained In terms of utility in outdoor maps it doesn't get better. There is still little point to dismounting in basically any situation. However, mounted units also got a massive buff in the Jugdral games. They got the ability to move the remainder of their movement after attacking (for example: a mounted unit with 8 move attacks an enemy 4 tiles away. After combat the mounted unit can move 4 tiles because they didn't use up all of their movement to initiate the battle.), while not being able to perform any other action. This is a very powerful mechanic that would give mounted units a very large advantage over their unmounted peers if there were no mechanics in place to keep mounts in check. This is where dismounting comes in

    I absolutely love this retrospective and Mystery of the Emblem deserves all the love it can get. I love how you talked about franchises with a 1st game which is the start of a new series, then the 2nd game which tries something different and takes, Starfox 2 comes to mind as it’s kinda sort of like Fire Emblem except everything happens in real time and it also has Zelda Elements too. Then there’s the 3rd game which builds upon the 1st and in some cases the 2nd while implementing new features to make it more better and accessible and to enhance the experience, basically the 1st game but on steroids Lmao. Metroid 2 is also worth mentioning and then we have Super Metroid which is leaps and bounds the best in the series to many.

    I disagree with your opinion on dismounting. It seems to me like people always complain about how overpowered mounted units are compared to foot units, yet any time any attempt is made to punish the player for over-reliance on them, be it a desert chapter or forced indoor dismounting, they complain just as much.

    • @GamesBrained
      @GamesBrained  5 лет назад +1

      I don't think I made any of those points against the system in this video? How do you disagree in regards to how it works in FE3?

    • @Drayze1
      @Drayze1 5 лет назад +3

      @@GamesBrained In your video, your points against forced indoor dismounting essentially boiled down to the idea that a player can end up "hamstrung" in certain maps thanks to having the characters they've invested in weakened. I think this was an intentional design decision, personally.
      It's pretty well-known that mounted units and fliers in Fire Emblem games are the best units, because movement (ESPECIALLY unimpeded movement) is the best stat. You pointed out the importance of positioning in your Fire Emblem Gaiden video, so it follows then that units who can be move further, offering more positioning options, are your best units on the whole. You will start to see a pattern in efficient play for most games in this series where infantry units take a major backseat to cavaliers/paladins and fliers because of this.
      I personally believe that the player is intended to build a party of varied classes in these games, so it is a failure of game design when the optimal strategy is to use only one or two. The forced dismount feature is then meant to be the punishment for relying too heavily on too few classes. The first indoor chapter is presented early enough in both books that base-level dismounted units are still capable of contributing in them, and if the player decides afterwards that they want to keep focusing exclusively on units that will be "hamstrung" in certain chapters, well that's just a failure in long-term planning...
      ...or, at the very least, it is in Thracia 776, where each unit has individual weapon levels, and so your kickass pegasus knight from the beginning of the game gets stuck wielding a basic steel sword indoors and likely shouldn't be fielded. In FE3, dismounting isn't nearly as much of a handicap as you make it out to be in your video. Since there's no weapon triangle in this game, all different weapons really have going for them are damage, accuracy, and weight. Since there are no available axe fighters in the entirety of book two (the section of the game that the mechanic was clearly designed around), your choice is entirely down to light, accurate swords, or the much heavier, slightly less accurate, and slightly stronger lances. An iron lance weighs 6, while an iron sword only weighs 2. Now, it's been some time since I've played FE3, but I don't think the speed penalty for dismounting is more than three, meaning that a dismounted unit can actually double more enemies, with a higher accuracy, than they can while mounted. Yes, they can't move quite as far as a dedicated foot unit, but the cramped quarters in most indoor maps make that less of an issue anyway.
      Also, I know that lances have 1-2 range going for them, but javelins are actually really really bad in FE3 (you literally cannot double with them and they're incredibly weak), and the exceedingly player-phase based nature of most of the maps makes the mere presence of 1-2 range weapons less of a necessity anyway.
      So long story short, I think forced indoor dismounting is a fine feature, and if anything, they didn't go far enough with it in FE3. I personally think it was a mechanic that they aced in FE5.

      @@Drayze1 Now that I have time to write more, let me clarify my stance.
      I agree that dismounting does push players to making a balanced team, which is definitely a good thing.
      However, I just don't think it was handled that well in this entry, and having a gauntlet of indoor maps at the end of Book 2 is mainly where my problem is. It's fine to say that one just shouldn't bring fliers or mounted units here, but an average player wouldn't assume that and may find units that they've come to love gimped for the sake of an under-fleshed out feature. All of the game up until this point was a pretty fair balance of indoor and outdoor, until there is a sudden reliance on indoor stages to make the one-location ending extra climactic, I suppose. To me, this is more of a 'gotcha!' than a very good way to balance mounted units; without the player looking ahead or using a guide, it feels like a huge break in the established level formula.
      It could be said that the player knows they are entering a tower, an indoor location, but I'd say that there is no way to know that the ending won't take one back outside, maybe to fight Medeus around a crumbled base, etc. Also, it kind of stinks to have to (if trying to play optimally) bring Book 2 Minerva along just to have her chat once with Maria at the very end; her poor stats and growth rates had her benched so fast in both of my play-throughs. This is what makes me suspect dismounting wasn't an originally planned feature and may have been slapped on extra after the level design was already set, and why I said it felt superfluous or an unnecessary hindrance.
      It really sounds like the dismounting is used way better in the later games, and you've got me looking forward to FE5 from what you've said. Honestly everyone else has been warning me about FE5 but you're the first person to actually get me a little hyped for it, lol. Having started my FE4 playthrough, I obviously can say that the cavalry reaaaally need balancing there, so I can't wait to experience for myself their attempt to fix it. Thanks so much for your comment and reply, I really appreciated hearing your perspective!

    Can you turn off combat animations in this game? I feel like this would be an arduous experience otherwise.

      Yes you can. This game is slow but the animations at least look great.

      @@PurpleRupees ok I’ll have to check it out eventually then. I have an analogue Super Nintendo and it’s so awesome. I’d probably just buy reproduction cartridges of each of the fire emblem Super Nintendo games

      @@cd4playa1245 One annoying thing about turning them off though is you don't see what stats you get when you level up. Just a LEVEL UP text box.

    I despise mystery of the emblem with all my being. Book 2 is serious torture. I can’t get past chapter 2, which seems to almost entirely rely on luck to actually beat. That’s not fun. The only possibility of me actually winning would be to ignore the thief, but then that’s just a tease? What am I missing?
