    microSD cards are TF cards under a different name. Back in 2004, when Motorola and SanDisk released the TF card, it launched as a separate standalone product. Aside from the fact that TF cards supported the same standard specs as an SD card (other than the size), TF cards were a separate, non-standardized product class.
    To standardize these flash memory cards, the SD Association adopted TF cards as microSD cards.

    Hi Patrick, nice video again! A couple of comments based on my experience with how people in China uses these units:
    1. Those who use firewall box like these in China rarely runs them as a single router / firewall, since there are just much lower-cost option if that's the case (such as R2S, R4S, those are ARM-based OpenWRT firewall box). Most of the time they actually install multiple router OSes so that one can do multi-WAN and be the main router (e.g. routerOS / iKuai etc.), while another to run services such as ad-blocker and bypassing the GFW (on heavily-customised OpenWRT firmware). Also some people use them as HTPC by passing the iGPU through to a windows VM, and also installing NAS OSes on them;
    2. The 'cable' you refer to that has USB-C on one end and barrel jack on the other is also not uncommon, it essentially just 'trick' the USB-C outlet to provide 19-20V and send it to the barrel jack. People commonly buy them to use their usb-c charger (the multi-port GaN versions are dirt cheap in China and almost everybody has them) to power their old laptop that don't have USB-C PD ports. I had one where I've used it with my old Dell laptop and it worked great (until I got a new laptop and I no longer need the cable);
    3. The 'adapter board' for the 2nd NVME ssd is a new features in these firewall unit, with the most common use case being to allow a M.2 SSD to be plugged into the WiFi / LTE mini-PCIe slot
    4. Regarding these 4x network port motherboard, one manufacturer even created a version recently with 6x SATA board, aiming at those who uses these board as NAS motherboard (but had to use a M.2 - multiple SATA port card to expand the connectivity);

      According to the Aliexpress page: the product does *NOT* support ECC. I believe the main reason for that is: they sell the same box with different CPU variants and the same mainboard should support Ryzen 5 5600U as one of these options but this CPU is a non-ECC one. I see the logic was like: it's cheaper to produce a single variant of the mainboard and then only swap CPUs there but it's weird to sell a PC with a pre-soldered non-ECC CPU on an ECC-enabled mainboard. Thus they ditched ECC support on the mainboard for all variants.

    • @kwinzman
      @kwinzman 2 года назад

      @@o.l.k.s.n That's a shame about the Aliexpress description. I don't believe your theory though. The CPUs that don't support it just ignore the extra traces on the motherboard. I am assuming the BIOS is standardized so I highly doubt there is extra cost adding checks for CPUs that don't support ECC.
      If ECC is not supported then that's due to the pure apathy of the board vendor.

  • @dimitriid
    @dimitriid 2 года назад +3

    That side m.2 slot I think I know why they could have done it like that: There's a few m.2 to pci-e docks out there for things like external GPUs or other pci-e devices. They're intended to just connect to laptops without thunderbolt if you're willing to just run them without the cover or make a hole in the cover to pass that cable thing through. Maybe they thought people would like to put pci-e devices on this and decided 'Hey we could extend this and put another m.2 on the side'
    So if you're ok with the clutter and unprotected devices you could probably also do something like 10gig ethernet with that raiser cable going into the side of it. Still very weird though.

    The two M.2 slots on the board are clearly marked (as can be seen at 8:21) as: M2_SSD1 & M2_WLAN1. To the right of the two slots are two screw holes, one lower down at 2230 distances from the M2_WLAN1 port and the other at 2280 distance from the M2_SSD1. The funky "H board" as Patrick calls it is connected to the M2_WLAN1 and makes that 2230 only slot accept a 2280 M.2 card. Looks like a passive adapter to give you a longer slot. The "3rd" NVME port is pretty interesting too. With appropriate cabling you could effectively give yourself an external M.2 and/or PCIe slot. Probably just not used in this model.

    This thing has a similar spec to the machine that I just bought. Though my machine does not have 4 Nic ports, just 2. I decided against the firewall form factor because my machine is going to be sitting in my basement, and it's really only going to be connected to the Wi-Fi router down there. If in the future I have to add more devices to the cluster, I'll just add a switch. These are really cool though, and I honestly believe that we're seeing a renaissance as far as minicomputing goes. I got mine as a do-it-all style device, I've got proxmox with PFsense and pi hole, then I've got 10 other VMs which I use for a development and video editing, and I've got a dedicated VM for my NAS which is just a very simple little box. Ok so this thing for a router is just nuts. After watching your vid on the HP T740 Thin client I built a router from one. 8Gb ram, 128gb SSD, Mellanox ConnectX-3 dual SFP+ running 2.5Gb to my cable modem (1.2Gbps service) and a 10Gbps DAC to my Aruba s2500 POE switch. That thin client spends its life nearly totally idle ( loads 0.70, 0.34, 0.22 ) LOL. So this device for router, is gonna be flat insanely overpowered. I love it. IF you could lock the power draw on this, to 25w you could power it over 802.3at with a POE splitter. Some mini pc let you limit power in bios, does this?

    You always mention Proxmox compatibility on these videos and the main site reviews but I don't think that I've ever seen you cover XCP-ng. I've recently relegated my old desktop to home lab functions (including virtualised OPNsense) and decided to go that route for my hypervisor because of the more intuitive UI (especially when using the full open-source version of Xen Orchestra).
    Are there any plans for STH to cover it as an alternative to ESXi or Proxmox?

      @@ServeTheHomeVideo What I do is run LXC containers on my cloud servers, it's considerably more efficient on resources than the hypervisor route, and if paired with an advanced FS such as ZFS or BTRFS I can set storage quotas for each container. I still use hypervisors for the odd use case when a container won't serve the need, such as for running Windows or for access to HW abstraction, and they will co-exist alongside containers just fine. A 64Gb 8c/16t box as reviewed could run at least a dozen containers simultaneously and a few VM's without breaking a sweat. BTW Thanks for the review, it was very helpful. The trouble with these Chinese devices is you never know what you will actually get, the specs I've seen are poorly written and contain incorrect or misleading data, but these little boxes are too amazing to pass up for what they can do. After seeing what you discovered, I think I'll buy a bare bones box and install my own NVMe storage and RAM. What's fun these days is with home fibre Internet and a few tiny boxes, you can operate a reliable and very capable mini data center in a home that uses up only a small amount of space.
