My parents told me as a child, about this very sad tale which happened before I was born. 'Whoppy King' went on a vicious crime spree after the Palisadoes Road incident. It took a while before he was caught and finally executed. Thanks for the video, Nigel!
Nigel by your reporting of this is what I remembered sad but those were the days when you paid with your life when you take some one else's not like today where slap away is like a walk in the park. That was a very good time to be in Jamaica 🇯🇲. Keep up with great work 👍
I grew up hearing this phrase. I heard it from my grandmother. My mother used it also. They used to say ever since whoppy kill phillop. Meaning some long time ago something happened.
Its Woppy kill Sydney but my Mom always say Woppy kill Phippop for meaning -a long time ago. Funny, i did not know this is real history. Thanks for t he upload🎉
Thank you for a travel back in time. I recall you visited Abraham Issa grave at Calvary cemetery. You mentioned that he was the first hotelier to allow black people in his hotel. Could you do some research on that aspect of Jamaica history?
Confusing and somewhat hilarious when Jamaicans use "he" instead of "her." I was told that those in rural Jamaica have that tendency. Interestingly, the switch is done with females, but not males. Not surprised at all that he assaulted her. The young man likely didn't play dead, because he wanted to protect her. When I was a child in Jamaica, I never heard of any violence. Maybe I was too young to know or remember. That crime happened way before I was born, I like your manner of storytelling.
@@garfieldwhittaker944 Thanks for explaining the origin. I'm Jamaican and have been around Jamaicans my entire life, but only in the past three years this has been my second time hearing it and both times on RUclips. LOL, the first time I was quite puzzled. Thanks again.
@@garfieldwhittaker944 Ironically, the first time I heard it was from a Montegonian! I was confused, and asked her if she was referring to a male or a female, and she clarified. It was also from her that I realized that Montegonians do not consider themselves 'country folk', but to others --- especially Kingstonians --- Montegonians are 'country folk'!
How did Sidnie Garrell come by the name "Phillup"? His killers name was Whoppy King or Whoppy but I dont see how Garrel could be called Phillup and that wasnt his given name
Part of the culture of being a Jamaican is having a nickname which would sometimes make to your birth certificate versus your real name. Very interesting story.
My granmother and mother would be very old people if they were alive. They both used the phrase Whacky kil phillup to express something that happened a long time ago. That was used long before the Garel incident.
I remember this horrible incident as a young girl and appreciate your telling the details. You are incorrect about the phrase "whoppy kill Philliup" that was from my granny's time, she was born in 1898. Please also learn correct prononunciation of names.
I don't think Nigel is incorrect. The internet may be incorrect because when you google the phrase, the information that he gave is what you find online.

I'm just learning this isn't just an expression at 48 years old 😂😂😂😂
I'll never used that phase again 😢
Hi Nigel hope you and your family is safe from the storm. Y'all be safe now.

A feature of West African languages which use only single/masculine gender pronoun...

Not all Jamaicans, we kingstonians don't talk like that, it is country people that call women him and he
@@zaravabrown4446 neither do Montegonians...but many rural Jamaicans still cling to the linguistic vestiges of our African/slave ancestors.

I'm ok. No electricity back in my area. So I'm having some issues charging up my devices. But soon will be back with more content
So where is Bernadette to this day?
The information I gathered is that she migrated later in her life.

Is Bernadette still alive?
The only information I found on her is that she later moved overseas. If still alive, she would be in her 90s.
All washed away
I’m the first here 😂
Thank you! I appreciate it very much
