I request Dr. Shamika Ravi to conduct a similar study based on Linguistic majority / minorities all over the world.
Would be interesting to see that. But People speak many languages simultaneously but they can’t be following many religions on paper. Personally they might respect many religions or spiritual beliefs but on paper you can call yourself only as a Hindu, or Muslim or Christian or Sikh or an atheist etc etc

shekhar you looks comfortable in data without looking into what is the impat of 5% of total population increase over hindus of muslims. it is 7 crs. ie from a population of 3.5 cr to almost 22 cr more than 6 times while that of hindus gone up from 30.5 cr to 111 crs roughly only just about 3.6 times. if the same rate is maintained for next 65 years just see what impact it will be😢

It’s best to not take seriously People who follow selective outrage or who do cherry picking of only certain news n data that only suit their narrative but go maliciously silent on news n research data that goes against their narrative.
A lot of people on both right wing n leftwing ideologies do this. Their biased view becomes very obvious n loud with time n people will know it too. They are two sides of the same coin. Hope more neutral people like Nitish Rajput will take their place who will show the facts as it is without manipulation or brainwashing narratives.
Whatever spin SG may be trying to give to this report, one thing cannot be hidden: Percentage Hindu population is decreasing and comparatively Percentage Muslim population is increasing in gallops.....

The report covers period between 1950 to 2015. But the complaint by liberals is that minorities are under threat after 2014 since BJP took over. Would have been better if we could have covered the changes over one decade to prove the liberals point of view as wrong

Why does Shekhar Gupta a very senior editor keep interrupting Shamika Ravi when some issues are uncomfortable for Mr Gupta, not done. However one can surmise the following after hearing this interview :
1. The decline of Hindus is disturbing and can lead to social upheavals some of which India is already seeing and could get worse
2. Increase in the largest minority group in India alongwith lower literacy rate in this community is another area of very serious concern again a destabilizing factor
Overall the interviewer was sub par and he seemed to be deeply uncomfortable that the Hindu population as a percentage of population is falling - WHY? Let the media and senior editors be mature enough to handle such topics then only will they do justice to their profession and more importantly viewers who spend time to watch such interview only to be disappointed by agenda driven media, journalists and in this case senior editors.

Muslims population in Bangladesh reduced drastically vis a vis 1971 census of which majority have illegally migrated to India . A dangerous trend
Muslims follow their religious tenet un-ambigiously, whilst many "so called" sanatana dharmis are secularists and just name sake without following religious tenets diligently. This denouement is bound to happen eventually.

True that states that reduced population gets lesser parliamentary representation...similarly those who have less children don't get anything while u didn't follow a national goal gets scholarship for their daughters to send them abroad.
In the end as country gets richer and people's quality of life improves all religions will decline. The simple truth is that all religions were created for agricultural/pastoral societies with small scale conflicts between kings, the modern industrial information age with gigantic states and incomprehensible scale of wars in the nuclear age is beyond the sense making capacity of any religion.
You are so wrong on this and this is the kind of scenario that India has to avoid going through. Getting richer without any purpose, aspiration & fulfillment is what has led USA’s 40% population into Drugs, Family structure broken & world’s highest suicidal country. He got anxious too often.
Shekhar ji fertility rate per woman is a clever way of masking the reality. Fertility rate should be per couple and not just woman. For every 10 muslim women birthing 26 kids, there might be only 2 or 3 men involved. So thats 26 next gen coming out of 13 current gen people. Whereas for other religions 10 women usually have 10 men involved.
In the words of Dr. Strangelove, the men are performing "prodigious sexual activity." Yet somehow, it is only the women getting pregnant. Strange, don't you think?
The higher TFR and increase in population means that Muslims are less developed than Hindus. It is common knowdge that poorer people have more children. One cannot take pride in this fact.
Northern states have much higher TFR than more developed Southern states. As a percentage the population of Southern states has declined. Will Shamika Ravi take pride in population growth of Northern states.
She published data to promote the RSS-BJP narrative against Muslims.

Reservation and any goverment benefits must go to only those who have 2 or fewer children. Also, only 1st or 2nd child should be eligible for government benefits. The critical question is... Would responsible Hindus/Jain parents and children politically support such a move?

So this report was brought to provide validity to implement caa and nrc after this election. This seemed to be its main purpose.
As long as we practice democracy where one person has one vote we are doomed to extinction. We should have the guts to ask for removal of democracy as it is practiced now. This is going to be unpalatable for most so till ee find an alternative form of government we must junk parliamentary democracy for a presidential form ( it is de facto but not de jure in India at present) and also get rid of "the winner being the first past the post"
Interesting conversation with SG bringing out the total contrast in approaches to data! SG in his own inimical charming way tries to paint a picture of balance and the lady is trying her best to promote her divisive agenda! The fact remains that Muslims will always be a minority and Hindus a vast majority and population will stabilize around the levels seen now! Active mass conversions don’t happen in India and won’t happen! Hindus themselves don’t realize that Hinduism is a vastly superior religion in terms of its intellectual cultural and social depth than any other religion in the world and it can and has stood the test of time! When it withstood a 1000 years of Muslim rule and india remained a majority Hindu country why are people afraid in the 21st century!

If we calculate the Annual Change in Population based on the first and last numbers, we get an average (-)0.125% growth per year for Hindus and an average (+)0.560% annual growth for Muslims. Based on these numbers and adding all other minorities under "others" we are likely to have 69.37% Hindus, 19.52% Muslims and 11.12% Others in the year 2100. The Muslim population could overtake Hindus at 38.83% to become 39.10% in the year 2400. All this is based on current data where Muslim birth rates were well above Hindu birth rates. Of course, this situation has changed quite a bit over the last 3 decades. As the author said, there is a dire need to study this data on a state level too.
What about secret christians? Most people are using Hindu names and wearing Hindu symbols (biggest example: Raj Shekar Reddy, Ambika Soni, Priyanka Vadra etc.?)
Mam, At independence how many people practiced tribal religions and what is the number today. What percentage of tribals have accepted or classified as Hindus. Its the same in Africa. I have worked there, The govt classifies them as per the ruling regime but most practice what they always did.

In 1951, Kashmir census not conducted, Muslim population of J&K not included. In 2015 census not conducted, hence 2011 census figure to be taken. Birth rate oh Hindus declined more than Muslims. Birth rate of muslims also declined and declining.

Ms Shamika is not a demographer. For a demographer data itself is nothing without proper interpretation. She used the data in a wicked way to fool people. A smaller base always show higher rate of increase. For anyone who has studied Population 43% increase is not alarming as the base population is much smaller than the majority population.
U can lull yourself to sleep once a cut mull take ur daug. .hter or your temple is upsurped and you gets bullied in your area for wearing tikka or rudraksah. People stop selling u groceries etc

I am rather amused that Shamikaji is being naive. Shekar is posing leading questions and she is getting trapped. The elephant in the room is that growth rate ( agreed, it is % Shekar; Don’t take us to elementary classes; We are grown up) of muslims is very high vis a vis Hindus. Don’t digress. What % contribute by birth rate, % due to illegal migration - Debate this. Further what is the % of crypto christians in south esp TN and Andhra as people want to have best of both worlds viz reservation and financial incentives from church. These are unpalatable but need detailed research. Go after that in stead of getting tutored by “ secularists”. Bite the bullet.
SG is trying his best to say that there is nothing to worry, we should be proud, percentages are not important, birth rate is ok etc. At these percentages, the political power will slip into muslims as they tend vote in bulk..this us the biggest worry. SG is very sielent on this in both the episodes.
Just an increase in numbers does not indicate that the minorities are not facing oppression.
Intact if people lack education, are not gainfully employed they tend to have higher TFR. Rohingya Muslims living in refugee camps in Cox bazaar in Bangladesh tend to have a much higher population growth rates

It was written for Gobhiji's narrative
Criticism coming from the West towards India as becoming an increasing inhospitable and unwelcome nation is NOT from the last 65 years that this research is covers. Dr. Ravi is missing the point when she talks about rectifying narratives. The criticism pertaining to India becoming intolerant and inhospitable towards its own Muslim and some other population groups is based on observations, policymaking and rhetoric of recent years, specifically after Modi's prime ministership.
Well before modi was India that great for some communities, you say.

A few discrepancies in the dataset of the paper:
1. Census 2011 figures reveal Hindu % to be 79.8% however here it is 78.06%.
2. Census 2011 figures reveal that % of Muslims was at 14.23% however here it has DECLINED to 14.09%
3. Between 2001 and 2011, % of Sikhs in Punjab DECLINED by 2% points (59.9 to 57.7%) however here it is showing an INCREASE.

What "matter of pride", it may be your opinion not everyone. We are very concerned, its all good to talk about other religions giving them services, more treatment but why in the expense of us, give the extras to them however u like. All these people calling us majorities, but what is a majority if its just numbers well the data is showing the trend, and if u are talking about rewards for being majorities, i mean where are they. All these are like forcing us to become minorities to get all those perks!
Given that poor people have more children than better off people, the fact that musli m population share has gone up can be interpreted as their socio-economic status having gone down.
The objective of study is itself wrong.Already India making family socio political study is not relegious or minority.
New generation of economists exclusively doing research on fertility related issues for the minority groups the "tukde tukde gangs" and the "urban Naxals" under the aegis of our 🕉️HINDU SAMRAT. This mechanism will perhaps help our right wing nationalist party in formulating a new policy to retain and increase the vote share. Next on the agenda is the delimitation of the parliamentary constituency, which will impact representations from the Southern states. Madam Ravi will perhaps be entrusted to do the task.
The purpose, the timing and the analysis is dubious. RCS -Dem data is a compilation of various sources, extrapolations and interpolations. For India, the data ends with 2011 census and there is no verifiable data since then. But leaving that aside, it would be obvious to anyone except Shekhar Gupta that the minorities were not under any threat before 2014, the period of analysis. Ravi is being disingenuous to use the data from before the Modi government to claim everything is wonderful for the minorities today. Shekhar is of course is totally solid out.
Timing of the report makes the intent clear. Create polarization and get back BJP in power. But what have they done so far or do they have a plan to solve it?
But the data is correct sir, why dont u concentrate on that and if Hindus feel worried why that should worry u and if it effects the outcome of the election.
