"Pocket holes are stupid" I don't think we can be friends now! 😂 As far as the Swiss army knife. Inflation. That's what happened lol. Good stuff man!
Im surprised you didn't say you could drive 4 pocket hole screws in the time it took to toenail the one screw lol
You’re a class act, Matt.
I take it back!! Seriously, thanks for watching my video. I hope it made you chuckle!
Yeah i thought i could do them myself until I needed them to look nice for people buying what i made. Had to change my mind then. 😂
I was just hoping he would say “Tubafour” just once. I’m pretty sure it’s my favorite 731 word 🙌🙏🏻🙌
You forgot to mention to spray paint the aluminum square red. I heard the red ones are more accurate. 😂
BRILLIANT!
I stopped watching 731 when he stopped building things and became the Festool/Woodpecker channel.
He still does the occasional build video, usually in Shorts. But I get responding to the market/audience.
oh.. there's way more problems with him than that. I noticed it immediately the first time I ever saw his channel that he uh.. lets just say he's not from wester tennessee.
I never watched him for builds as his stuff just not that good and reminds of those make things without knowing how to woodwork.
Just found you and I have to say, this is the daddest of woodworking channels! Instant sub! Love how you bring your girls into the work. I showed mine all sorts of things from fixing cars to fixing up the house.
Thanks! I bet your girls are very formidable.
LOL "You know what else works? Making your kids do it!" You got yourself a sub with that.
Thanks!
My kids had already grown up and moved out before I started woodworking, so I was forced to get one of those gator lift things. When they were little I was able to have them as cheap labor so the "Dad! There are NAILS in the BOARD!" "Then don't pick it up by that part" had me on the floor rolling, especially since I've actually used the "don't pick it up by that part" reply. Just priceless.
Ha! I appreciate it, Mike.
I either get my plywood cut at the store OR son in-laws are great helpers…
Two pieces of scrape plywood, one piece of scrap 2x4 and two 3/8th bolts with nuts and washers to hold it all together. Well under $30. Probably under $5 for those of us with grown children. I figure in a few years the grandchildren can backfill the grown kids too!
That was Awesome man, really appreciate the laughs! I don’t fault 731 “tool works” 😂 mans gotta make a living. A man would have to be deaf, dumb and blind, which I am pretty close to being at my age now. not to notice that he is kind of a sellout. Reckon it might be easier than building which is what I’ve been doing since I was a child. Anyhow you got me to click the subscribe button, good job! Keep em coming
Thanks for watching and subscribing!
So good to see a shop full of used equipment and repurposed furniture. As a poor excuse for a self-taught woodworker, I'm encouraged. My tablesaw is a 1970's era Craftsman with no safety features. Couldn't even put a riving knife on it if I wanted to. Was a "gift" from my father-in-law, who i can only assume is trying to kill me...I'm a girldad to two myself, and some of my happiest times are working with them on projects. Keep it up, sir.
I've had three old Craftsman table saws. None have riving knives, but at least the one I'm using now can have a splitter. My first one couldn't even have one of those.
@worstworkshop I think the microjig splitter system will work for mine. That old thing has been put through it. At one point, the power switch must have failed so someone threw a light switch on the side for power.. Ah, the joys of used tools... Stay cool. Should be better in DFW now. I'm in San Antonio and it's been tolerable these past couple of weeks. Hope you can enjoy the holidays.
And my award for best video of the day….THIS ONE! 😂Keep em coming!
Thanks, Ted!!
You are my new mentor and I am looking forward to both woodworking and parenting tips in the future. The face your younger daughter makes is priceless and looks a lot like how my daughter used to look at me when I would ask her to hand me my welding stinger when the welder was on. Whatever doesn't electrocute you makes you stronger has always been a family motto ever since my uncle passed away after he told us he could fix the bad transformer on the pole in front of his trailer home. RIP Uncle Cooter, we will miss your drunken antics the most at Christmas. Subbed.
HA! I love that Uncle Cooter story, and thanks for your very kind comment. Look forward to hearing from you in the future.
The only pocket holes I use are in my jeans. Oops! Love the videos. I found my plywood lifter 2 years after I bought it while cleaning the shop. Little girls are great because you always know where to find them. Your two are adorable.
Thanks a lot!
Informative AND funny. A winning combo.
Thank you!
I quit watching 731 a while ago because i got tired of all the videos about SHOPPING. I want my time making stuff to be about MAKING stuff, not BUYING stuff. I put comments asking him to focus on developing skills with a few essential common tools and saw no atempt to make any difference. I figure this youtube thing is just all about the money for many people on here. There are successful people on youtube that dont discuss buying stuff AT ALL.
It's a big topic to cover, and different creators have different standards. I won't fault a man for running a business well, especially because I'm sure he'd rather be making things. But he's giving the market what it demands.
Agree on everything except the right angle attachment. Not essential for woodworking but a I use all the time for general construction situations. This 5% member loves your vibe.
The right angle attachment is handy for when you skip a step when drilling a hole and don’t feel like taking it apart.
Thank you for sharing. Great alternatives. Everyone stay safe, happy and healthy. From Henrico County Virginia
Thanks! Hope you got a laugh.
Love your stuff, and especially the two young stars of your show! Mine are teens, and I miss those ages.
Not to mention, wise thoughts about what "every woodworker [really] needs" (or doesn't) today.
Thanks! They really are stars!
@@worstworkshopas another dad of 2 girls, I agree!
Pocket holes are stupid - the most accurate description.
Good stuff! Thanks for the chuckles! Best wishes for You & Yours from The Netherlands! 😎
Glad you enjoyed it. All the best!
I'm 75 YO and worked with wood for most of my life including refabing houses. I have never drilled or used a pocket hole.
Right on! I can't say I'll never want to get into them, but I just don't feel the need at this point. I had enough years before the became a fad that it would be an adjustment, and I think they're mostly for people that build from fancy plywood.
THIS. IS. BRILLIANT.
Entertaining and helpful. What more could you want?
Thank you!
Oh wow, your channel is going to be huge. Looking forward to watching it grow. Kind of exciting I never subscribed to a channel before it got big
Thank you so much! Welcome to the journey!
Awesomeness! Thanks for the laughs! Good show brother!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm laughing my ass off at the pocket hole. I just got done watching Rex and thought i miss Worst Workshop. Thank You again. great job
HAHA!! Thanks! I'm trying to put them out as quickly as I can.
731 woodworks is mostly just a channel to get you to buy things using his affiliate links.
I'm sure he doesn't mind you doing that. :)
I believe 731 woodwork's is more of a sales person than a carpenter, Most of the items he promotes are just more of the same stuff he already promoted. I am a 70 year old retired Navy vet and try to find the cheapest price on anything I buy for woodworking, it does not matter who made it and if it can be done without the tool why buy it?
I figure if you have the money, a lot of these things can make it easier and faster. If you're a pro on a schedule, the investment usually pays itself off pretty well. For guys like you and me, it's often a different story.
I love 731 woodworks as well as most of the other guys you sampled videos from! You had me laughing start to finish, great stuff! We all have areas we choose to spend more for specific things so i love getting tips i hadnt seen before on ways to save in areas i dont want to over spend. Also, i bought a Kregg pocket hole jig brand new in the box about 2 years ago. Its super nice! So nice, you could still call it brand new in the box. Why? Because pocket holes are stupid! I subbed so fast, cant wait to see more!
Thanks, and merry Christmas!
You look so different without the hat! Love your channel
Do the glasses make me look smart?
I mean, sure, believe that if it makes you feel good ;) @@worstworkshop
😂
I love your daughters expressions while carrying the sheet of OSB. Hahahahaha! Awesome!
She's one of a kind!
Dude, I just subscribed. Can't get enough.
THANKS!
Your younger daughter may have an acting career in her future! Loved the video. Pocket holes are stupid but dammit, I love them still!
Just keep building! I might like them more if I had a nice jig, but I love using my hand tools for joinery.
Thank you! I needed that.
You're quite welcome. I just hoped it would make somebody laugh.
@@worstworkshop It made me laugh and smile. I love that your daughters get involved.
''Well don't pick it up by that part!'' LOL!!!
That was great! Thank you :-) Subscribed.
Awesome, thank you!
love his channel!
Me too!
I do watch 731 but when I go to look at the prices of items he recommends, I too am wondering who he is actually targeting for these videos. I'm a Dewalt fanboy and so I bought the 90 degree drill attachment based on his recommendation. Not overly impressed - I'm guessing he didn't enjoy sticking his big paw into a tight space to use this thing. To use this ANYWHERE be prepared to support it (BOTH DIRECTIONALLY AND ROTATIONALLY) at the 90 deg bend , otherwise it will not work. Yep, I bought the spring loaded punch as well. As you say, it can be done cheaper and more accurately with many things much cheaper. As regards the GATOR LIFT - damn, I don't have kids (cute kids!). Very enjoyable video - subscribed!😂
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video, and sorry it's taken so long to respond. The whole family has been sick (better now).
Pocket hole jigs work for all kinds of stuff and are way cleaner. I have done what you did before. I have a nice one now. I didn't starting out. The little single one he listed it the bomb for fixing furniture. Mostly legs. Especially heavy things that have little wooden feet poorly attached that someone has just "slid" on the carpet ripping it off. A well places block and a few pocket screws with some glue is a good thing. Been there and done that.
I agree. They have their place. I enjoy doing traditional joinery, but if I had s good jig, I'd use it.
I honestly think when Matt went full time, he sold his Soul to youtube, sponsorship, and affiliate marketing. I know he would say, "Haters gonna hate" I miss the days of hey im going to build something. Check out how I do it. Now his channel is fluff... buy this thing you don't need to make this thing... Don't get me wrong, I like the man. I like his morale and his Faith, I just skip over most of the"tools you don't need"
I know a lot of people feel that way, and I'm sure Matt does too. I legitimately think he's a good guy trying to run a business and take care of his family. I watch his videos for the simple reason that I enjoy them.
Thanks for another great video! Us men tend to spend a whole lot to make mostly ugly birdhouses.
Your girls are great and seem to have appropriate expressions for the situations.
Keep the videos coming and please continue to exploit your source of child labor.
I ended up unsubscribing to 731 because he turned into a shill machine. I get it. He's not the first person I unsubscribed to for the same reason. Full time on You Tube requires users to generate content consistently. Multiple woodworkers have talked about how project videos take longer to film/produce and get fewer clicks.
Well, he does still make stuff. He’s had 2 build videos post in the last 2 months which is on par with every other big “woodworking” YT channel, and he’s put out 2-10+ times more content than every other woodworking channel. But that’s none of my business.
He did but can't really blame him, money talk.
I rarely watch his video anymore, it's not what it used to be and what got him all the subscribers. I hope he stay successful, I'm just not interested.
GOL. I giggled out loud a bunch of times while watching this video. "It's probably a Bible verse." That's what I thought when I first started watching him.
Thanks, Brett!
😂😂😂 Too funny! Love your alternatives! 😂😂😂
Thanks, Damon!
I'm 65 started in construction at 15 , back then there were no sliding miter saws actually there werent to our knowledge beveled miter saws , we had plain old miter saws (electric) hammers hand planes chisels tape measures angle squares framing squares speed squares hand saws and we built multi million dollar homes track housing and custom homes , I BY NO MEANS AM i SAYING THESE NEW TOOLS ARENT SWEEET cause they are , but they do nothing today we werent doing in the mid 70s and doing it as nice and much nicer actually , but I agree whole heartedly with your assessments here, i like and watch a few of the people you have shown here, they seem like good guys and I am not calling any of them sellouts but they either get alot of free tools tooling machinery etc. and they do no better than anyone I grew up with USING FAR LESS tools the key here I think is thattheir viewer base is more aligned with the newer know nothing yet carpenters and their teaching modern easier to use methods than the old style methods of using your actual skills and knowledge, By that I aint saying certain tools machines cnc etc arent sweet but they takeaway the knowledge and part of the skill, this may seem mean or cruel and is not at all meant or intended that way, but sponsorship is exactly that no way will i pay woodpecker pricing cause I dont need them doing my brainwork for me
I'm a big fan of Rex Kreuger. It seems the further he goes in woodworker, the more he gets back to the old ways. I think you have a great perspective. Thanks for sharing it.
Thank you for the laughs, and the good advice. I'm going to write Festool on everything. It appears fashionable.
You should get some cardboard boxes and paint them Festool green and white while you're at it. You're not a real woodworker unless you have a stack of systainers.
🤣Yup, it was a good one!!!! I am a sub of 421 Tool / Wood / Shop Works or whatever its name is. I do enjoy his content including his "5-tool informercials" LOL. Thanks again for a funny one from BratWurst wood barn.... or whatever this channel is called...
Thanks! Hey, I love your warhammers. I have a big mallet build coming up soon, and may steal some ideas from you.
Much appreciated and please thief as much as you want! Can’t wait to see it!
No you have it rite, 731 tool works! I have not seen him make anything in like 2 years! As he said” those videos don’t get a whole lot of views so i don’t show them” . Iam shore he dose do wood work I just have not seen it in a long time, but like a lot of people I still watch the videos he puts out.
So true. I like Matt but he hasn't put out a build video in quite awhile.
I bet he's a really good guy, but I understand where you're coming from.
just simply brilliant
Glad you enjoyed it!
2:11 to be fair, I’m pretty sure the kids are more expensive than the gator lift, so don’t go that route if you don’t already have kids in stock in your shop 😂😂
Love these videos
Thanks!
Thanks!
Hey there, nice video. I am kinda boring with all these fancy workshops i will never have, so i like smaller ones. Keep up the good work
Thanks! Mine's a long-term project. Maybe someday I'll get to change the channel name to Mediocre Workshop.
You had it right. He used to make things out of wood. Now he just hawks tools.
Well, he does build stuff in Shorts, and I think he has a B channel where he builds. I guess no one wants to watch him build stuff?
Heehee! great fun video, greetings from the UK, be lucky!
Cheers!
If you watch Paul Sellers or Tom McLaughlin, you find traditional ways to use pocket hole screws without the jig.
Thanks for the tip!
Don't have two kids to move the sheet goods. Guess I'll have to get that gator lift. 😂
Not sure there's any other option. If you're married, and your wife gives you a hard time, tell her I said so. Then remind her how expensive medical care is.
I don’t have kids so I have to carry it myself.
Well, that Gator Grip thing is a lot less expensive than girls, if it's any consolation.
😂😂😂😂 loving it. Really funny! You can tell you have kids. I watch frozen a lot too 🤣😂🤣😂
Let it go!
@@worstworkshop let it goooooo! The cold never bordered me anyway 😂😂😂
Recently discovered you (some algorithm hocus-pocus), sub'd. Loved your Rex Kreuger project video (I'm also a fan of his), and as a fan of Matt at 731 WOODWORKS (yes, that's sarcasm), I watched this, too. I agree with all your points-- often thought the same on my own. But... a nagging thought has invaded my usual curmudgeon-ish serenity: perhaps it SHOULD be called "731 Tool Works"? Sawdust for thought...
I think Matt is aware of everything people say behind his back. He's also a genuinely nice guy, from what I've heard. I'm a fan.
I love the family dynamic during #3!
Me too! Thanks.
Great video! I’m excited to get my little girl in the shop with me when she’s old enough.
Where might someone get one of those awesome hats?
I got it on Amazon. I may offer something similar at some point, but until then, you might just search for it.
Hi I’m a cheapskate woodworker who always tries the cheap option 1st and more often than not there is an alternative.
You're not alone, my friend.
My fledgling woodworking hobby has turned into a tool buying hobby. It all started with a hammer and a skillsaw over 50 years ago. After retiring four years ago and buying a house with a three car garage I began woodworking in ernest. The cost of All those small tools that get used only once then forgotten about or used infrequently has really gone insane. I really have to get a grip on reality.
It's a fun hobby. If you really want to sink some cash, take up guitar building!
Best video yet!!!
Thanks!!
#3 was the funniest and best hack yet. The whole video was great. It made me hit the subscribe button.

I have used the " make your kids do it" more than any other on this list.. well both lists ;P
Yep!
Excellent work again! It's good to see Princess moving around so well, and I loved Little Bit's facial expression, it was classic. Pocket Holes? I don't need no stinkin' pocket holes. I use mortise and tenon joints instead, all you need is a decent chisel for the mortise and a decent saw for the tenons. Don't get me started on Festool Dominoes. Anyway, I hope you and your family are all well and that you are all having a wonderful week.
Ha! You're a man after my own heart. Though I love my dowels too.
Thanks for making this video. I died of laughter watching it. 😄A lot of the things you said are true too.
I just hoped somebody would get a laugh out of it, and that Matt wouldn't get too angry. :)
Matt and Amy are gonna love this video. ( 731 "wood" works) 😅
I hope so! My fear is always that someone will see the thumbnail and dismiss me as a hater.
Yeah a center punch is for metal. For wood, an awl, nail, screwdriver, or really any sharp pointy thing works just fine.
They're good for setting finish nails too, but I don't do that very often.
Great little actors those girls are 🤣🤣
Thanks! They get better all the time, too.
