I am here year 2020 because of Quinta and Rolly typhoon. Known as Goni. I remember Lawin and Yolanda. One of the most strongest typhoon hits Luzon.

I remember one of first typhoons headed for HK after I arrived: nighttime, and sky flashing with distant lightning [while still calm and dry hk]
Lately noted NASA remarking on lightning as sign of storm intensifying, as Simone notes.

Cheers Martin - when these storms interact with land it can also cause all sorts of violent updrafts which might cause more lightning. That's one reason why the Hurricane Hunters only fly recon over the ocean and not over land.

Man, the lightning was biblical !! I think is due to increased convergence at landfall. NHC was mentioning this effect during landfall of Andrew in Florida in 1992, as they noticed similar increase in eyewall convection. It happens only in strongest storms (CAT 4, 5).

Super Typhoon Haima is a Category 5 super typhoon but it's one minute sustained winds about 285 km/h.

What was the highest gust you recorded?

The city he was in recorded highest gust 174 km/h in the first half and 197km/h in the 2nd half. Unfortunately James couldn't really film the 2nd half, because he was trapped in the hotel.

PAGASA data in Tuguegarao showed a gust of 234 km/h and a pressure of 942.1 hPa though..

​@@aron1332 if you are looking how the storm will punish the place looked at the 10 mins sustained winds ,when you ask to the locals their who is stronger ,haima or mangkhut they will say haima is more stronger than mangkhut ,mangkhut have a 175 mph at landfall and his 10 mins sustained winds is 205 kph ,haima's 10 mins is 225 kph
