About time - it was getting to the point that if I saw him try something even vaguely non-conventional, I immediately started prepping myself for it to go wrong
How strange. The girl, her father and coach has just learned she has a rare heart condition that can be deadly, a treatment is presented and because she would have to stay off swimming for a few weeks, she and her coach don't want the treatment? What's more important? Staying alive in the future or dying in the swimming pool?
These thing happen a lot in real life. an athlete or competitor spend years of their life on training to reach a certain goal then someone tells you that you have to stop or postpone it, they not going to take it. and also didn't help that in this episode a patient is a teenager and you know teenager doesn't think straight most of the time.
@@PiyachonYuenyongHYDE I understand the teenager's grief about her prospects in the sport being maybe ruined because of the operation, but her dad should have tried to convince her or told the doctors to do it anyway. I know she filed for emancipation, so I hope the judge will make her undergo the surgery. What is more important than staying alive?
@@Jorindeify You'll find lots of people who have a thought of "I rather be dead than can not pursue my goal" also seems like her dad wasn't really close from the way he just told her to just do it instead of try to talk to her.
@@PiyachonYuenyongHYDE yea I remember in figure skating a 16 year old girl was so sick that she couldn't stand and was exasusted, but she still performed as it will put her on the path of trying out for the 2022 Olympics. Her couches had to give her smelling salts to keep her conscious
That coach was the worst. That was beyond dangerous and irresponsible. Any coach that would sacrifice the safety of the athletes for a win should be fired and no judge in their right mind should ever let a child and their coach make medical decisions over a doctor and a parent. I wonder what she would if this were her daughter 🤦🏽♀️
8:24 I love how he understood that Dr. Hallstead’s outburst wasn’t just because he’s a mean guy or he was trying to be rude to the man in charge. He was worried about his patient and I love that this guy could see that and decided to step in because he has without his help this girl most likely would’ve put herself in risk but honestly, I like that this is a big guy in charge and he does care he doesn’t like yes he cares that Dr. Hallstead spoke with him with disrespect. However, he also cares about the reason for the disrespect. He knows that will was just concerned about his patience and I love that about this guy I’ve seen way too many people in charge who are just jerks and I really like to see this guy come around and show his soft side.
You realise he also broke the law when he blabbed the patient’s medical info to someone who had no right to the info, right? Even when you own a hospital you aren’t supposed to have access to the patients’ medical files! You can’t loom and doctors aren’t supposed to blab.
I imagine she’s worked for years to get this far, that’s most of her life, by missing one race she’ll loose so much , as a parent I’m with the father but I can understand the girl, it must be devastating that she could miss the Olympics
"She's been living independently at her boarding school-" Ma'am, that is not what independently means. IANAL but my understanding of emancipation is that it's granted (rarely) to minors who have demonstrated that they are able to support themselves and who receive no parental support. While it could be argued that she does not rely on parental support due to her swimming scholarship, a boarding school is a temporary situation, and even without a potentially fatal heart condition, relying on swimming as a means to support herself into adulthood seems like a really weak argument for "independence."
Wait if the whole court situation needed to go through a Judge doesn't that mean Doctor Halstead would also have to be there to not only give his side of the story but to explain the health risks to the judge on why the girl needs to have the surgery done? In all cases the Judge would logically agree with the doctor
I believe the court situation was just about the teenager being emancipated and therefore able to make her own medical decisions, not whether her medical decision is the right one to make
@@alexschofield8085 True, and the sad thing is because it has nothing to do with the medical they'll fail to realize the coach was manipulating her into threatening her life. But that's just how it works
@@iwtbrnk But wouldn't the dad get to speak in a emancipation hearing? It doesn't have anything to do with her heart condition *until* the dad points out in court that the reason she's seeking emancipation is because she wants to leave her medical condition untreated so that she can continue playing a sport uninterrupted.
It’s insane how some Asians who think they may have some heart condition misdiagnosed might actually have Brugada. Life expectancy is short (average of 40 years). For those who are east Asian or have any heart condition, please do get checked out.
The world is full of excellent, world class athletes that ALMOST made it to the Olympics. All she has is a chance at it, and that’s a full year away! Swimming isn’t restricted to teens like gymnastics. She’s young & could have several more chances in her lifetime. After she recovers. The question isn’t Olympics versus surgery. It’s a remote possibility of making the Olympic team versus survival.
isn't is a HIPPA violation for Halstead to tell the guy about a patient's health? the guy who bought the hospital isn't a doctor and is not involved with the patient's treatment so isn't it a violation to be announcing her medical problems to him?
If I was in that girl's shoes I would have said yes. She was stupid for trying to put a career before her health despite it was a life and death situation, the doctor said it wouldn't cause interference. If she hadn't changed her mind, ut could have cost her life. There are other chances to accomplish your dreams or find something else to do. Moral of the story is to put your well being first.
People seem to think "no I'll ignore the life saving surgery cause I'll be kicked out of the team otherwise"... and they don't stop to think "huh, maybe I can't compete when I'm DEAD!" Would you rather miss out and have to work hard to try and make it later, and deal with the set back, or kill yourself holding onto something you already lost? Either be an inspiration to young competitors or be known as the idiot who refused life saving treatment... but no sure go with the later
Olympics or possible death. I think I would choose the Olympics too. When you dedicate your whole life to something especially a sport the thought of being without it can be devastating. Any day could be ur last day.
I'm a med student in a family full of doctors and friends who are doctors or med students. I have no idea what a dev is and will mkst certainly forget in a week or so because that's don't make any difference in my field.
I would side with the girl on this one yes she's taking a big risk but people take risks all the time. People climb mount everest and risk death no one tries to guilt trip them out of it. If they had a defribrilator and trained staff on standby they could lower her risk.
So youre not a medical practiser . She could pass on , inhales water , or not be able to be ressuscitate ., or get vascular accident and other diseases. .
And that's why you wouldn't be a good doctor. You need to respect their decisions even if they are bad ones, because if they do not accept medical treatment it cannot be forced. Yeah, it sucks, but making them hate you and the hospital turns them further away from the treatment.
Wow, Dr. Halstead actually does something that doesn’t crash and burn. Good for him.
(Apart from the possible HIPPA violation telling Mr Buisnessman about her condition)
@henryward-raatikainen2189 Pfffftt HIPPA violation, that's nothing on the Will-Halstead-scale-of-illegal-actions-that-never-have-lasting-consequences.
