I’ve rented a cotton candy machine for the past few years (skipping covid years of course) and let me tell you something. If you want to be THE house to go to rent one. It’s honestly not expensive either. I rent it for about $50 and it comes with two flavors of sugar. Just seeing how thrilled kids and parents alike are it’s so worth every penny. Nothing like a giant cone of cotton candy while you’re dressed up as Michael Myers wandering the streets. I hope in 30 years someone makes a video about how memorable that was for them. Still remember this one guy that emptied out an ashtray full of loose change into our bags. When I got home there was a cross necklace pendant and guitar pick in there too.
Honestly, my favorite part of Halloween as a kid, was sticking my nose into that plastic pumpkin and just sniffing all the candy I'd gotten.. Like my entire haul was a big candy potpourri!!!
There was a guy on my block who, deciding that it was too late in the season for a garage sale, decided too let the kids wonder through tables and pick one (1) thing to take home. I got Earthworm Jim for PC on CD-Rom.
My favorite part of Halloween was getting home and dumping everything onto the floor. As a kid, seeing that big pile of candy was like seeing a big pile of money as an adult. The mystery of what I had been handed throughout the night was part of the excitement.

As a kid, post-Halloween ennui hit me like postpartum depression every year. My birthday's Devil's Night, so it was a double whammy. I'd mourn for a week and then self-medicate with Christmas. Neurotic, yes. As for atypical trick or treat fare, once a neighbor gave me a pack of Hostess orange cupcakes. Thrilled me to my very core. Loved having a pile dedicated to chips & pretzels. The exact same kind that showed up in my lunch at least thrice a week. But pulling a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos out of a pillowcase at 8:30 p.m. was glorious. Seemed so substantial and were a nice little salty nosh to cut through the sea of sugar.
I know Wendy's still sells the Halloween junior frosty coupon books for $1. You get ten little frosties or you can combine them. Each coupon ups the size by one. For example, 1 coupon is a junior size, 2 coupons gets you a small, 3 a medium etc etc. I loved them when I was a kid but now that I have kids of my own it's a good little treat to give them whenever we pass a Wendy's.

There was a house we all went to as kids that gave every kid a Halloween plush of our choice. That was our top hit every trick or treating. 2nd was our local bakery gave every kid a pumpkin shaped sugar cookie with orange sugar. The weirdest thing I got was a non frozen otter pop lol
"The Money House"! During the great Trick or Treat Battles of my past, there were always rumblings and rumors from other kids on the road of at least one or two homes on your route that were handing out cold cash. Usually it was homes that either ran out of candy and were handing out change until the dad returned from the grocery store with more candy, or homes that completely forgot it was Halloween. They'd toss some change and then turn off their lights for the night. Or, The Money House was an entirely mythical creation by kids who were so utterly blinded by piles and piles of candy, that they started hallucinating about cash being the ultimate prize of the night!
I always give out treat bags filled with various toys, candys, goodies and full sized bars. None of those little _"fun size"_ bars from me. That and cold drinks (like capri sun, kool-aid jammers, etc.) We also love to dress up and scare any trick or treaters brave enough to come our way. My birthday is on the 29th of October, so I have so many great trick or treating memories as a kid, and there's not a single year that I've not celebrated. Now I get to make it fun for other kids. There was a woman who gave us a choice between candy, or what was in her hand. Everyone picked candy...except I went for the "what's in the hand", and it was a dollar bill. I felt like Charlie Bucket when he found a dollar. Like, "think of all the candy I can buy!" We were all blown away.
6:30 nothing like bumping into random groups of classmates half way through the night and getting the intel for which neighborhood had the fullsized candy bar.
Usually we were the "unusual house" because Dad loved to go that extra mile and we'd collaborate every year to make awesome goodie bags, because if it's one thing we learned from Tales from the Darkside, you never know when a creature of the night will come to your door :P. Dad's favorites were always the toys and loved to give out simple toys like he had growing up. The most popular were miniature coloring books and a box of crayons. Followed by glider planes and bubbles. Last year we gave out skeleton necklaces (at mom's request) and this year pull back skulls...something we ordered before he passed away in August. He didn't have video games, computers or electronic toys growing up, Hell he didn't even have a television. He wanted to share that bit of his childhood with the neighborhood and the parents always loved it. Dad's second favorites were always the dog treats. He was an animal person and always stocked up on bags of treats from the dollar store to give to people who trick or treated with their dogs. As for the candy? We usually took into consideration what we'd probably snack on, lol. Mom always liked chocolate, so we usually got a big bag of that from Costco. We also got a bag of Child's Play because Dad had a sweet tooth too, he loved Tootsie Rolls, Milk Duds and Dots. Besides that usually we'd put a miniature bag of pretzels to help take up space or sometimes something I'd like twizzlers, gummy bears, sour candy, etc. With Dad's passing, I didn't think Mom and I would go all out, probably hand out the skulls Dad and I ordered. However Mom said she wants to make bags, because Dad wouldn't want to disappoint the kids and kind of carry on his generous and loving spirit.
Weirdest stuff I would get would be these homemade felt pumpkins that people would glue coins and candy corn to. They made very little sense - you'd have to peel off the coins (usually just pennies or nickels) if you wanted them, and they'd be sticky or fuzzy from the felt, and obviously the candy would be ruined. So weird. But yeah, it broke up the fun-sized monotony for sure.
Matt's out here living a life where he got mini comics and trading cards when he trick-or-treated, I lived in the neighborhood that commonly handed out toothbrushes and mini Bibles.

The strangest thing I got each year from the folk at #22 on my street was a billiard ball in a sock, stranger still they would always hurl it around my head and insist on taking my candy bucket in exchange. When I would eventually come around several hours later, most of the good candy on the street would be gone but there was still room in my lovely new stock for a few candy corns to nestle in with my new billiard ball!
Matt, man. The McDonald' coupons really brought me back. I forgot those existed. I remember keeping a hash brown coupon just because it felt good knowing I could have a hash brown if I ever wanted it. That feeling of security was honesty better than eating a hash brown could ever be.

I remember one house that gave out 50 cent pieces one year...I still remember that. I think me and some friends hit that house at least two or three times that night, haha. And it may not be crazy different, but this house by my grandma's always gave out homemade popcorn balls. And I just remember them being SO good.
As someone from the Detroit area, I would get a few snack size bags of plain Better Made potato chips. Really wish they were bbq . Also I would always end up with little hard chalky monster shaped candies that were in little individual boxes that had monsters printed on them. They would always get pitched due to the unknown company of origin.

I loved that show! 😂🥰 & those coupons were the best!!! 😭💖 I remember one of the coolest Halloweens I ever had as a kid was when I went trick-or-treating at the mall. I think it was like '93 or '94? I got a box of jumbo Sesame Street crayons & a cassette of songs, a bag of green apple licorice & a bag "gourmet" jelly beans from a li'l candy shop, & a cassette of songs from Animaniacs. It was LIT. 🎃✨
I'll be damned. I have a thing for mini comics and have had a set of these for a while. I just called them "Marvel Presents" as nothing in them gave a clue to their origins. It's awesome to finally find out their history!
Full size candy bars were always an excellent score! So much nostalgia in this video, but I can honestly say that I do not remember getting the comics or cards but that doesn't mean that I didn't get them. In the neighborhoods that I grew up in the change usually came from elderly people and it wasn't loose rather 5 coins (pennies mostly😒) were wrapped tightly together in saranwrap! McDonald's Gift Certificates were always a win and were a staple for my trick or treating hauls. I always liked when I would get a popcorn ball and I would say that was the weirdest thing, again that I remember, that I received. The thing that made my trick or treating the "bees knees" where the few years in the late 80s early 90s, I am guessing, when the Mars candy mini bars (Snickers, Milky Way, 3 Musketeers) ran promotions where each wrapper had a letter and you had to spell out something and would win (no not really) a prize. I don't remember what the prizes were, but I want to say one of them was a Disney trip and you had to spell Mickey or Disney? I searched the inter webs and couldn't find anything about it but I know it was real...wasn't it?
I remember getting three weird things over the years: 1) an unrecognizable plastic figurine that vaguely looked like a disembodied butt with fat legs; 2) a toothbrush; and 3) A religious comic book that said Halloween is a sin. I always liked getting a mini box of Nerds candy. In my neighborhood people mostly gave out Tootsie Rolls, so anything other than that was exciting.
I remember my Great Aunts neighborhood was the one we’d always go through when I was a kid, one of the corner houses was a dentist, so he’d always hand out a quarter. Thanks for the memories!
Comic book stores have been selling mini comics for Halloween again for the last several years. I know because my parents normally give out full size bars (the Neighbourhood doesn’t get many kids) but a few years would give comics AND full bars.
I've always wondered: Those comics they give away for Halloween, are they actual mini-comics (like small pages), or are they regular-sized comics that just have fewer pages?
Instead of candy I personally make dozens of craft packs. I buy stickers, glitter glue, a small toy, an eraser, a pencil 2 markers and 2 crayons and include a coloring page and a glow stick. I try to make sure no two packs are alike. I spend all night of the 30th putting them together.
Honestly I find most regular candy bars to be kinda ho-hum, what I always appreciated and try to give out myself is biiig handfuls of smaller candies. More variety that way. and if supplies dwindle, you can start handing out just 2 or 3 per person.
The little mini mart down the street from my house as a kid gave out cans of soda. They'd open their vending machine for us kids. Always loved that. I'd also love the snack size bags of chips or snacks. I try to be the house that gives out good stuff. One year I did glow stick bracelets that was a hit.
I take great pleasure in my adulthood getting to choose "top shelf" candy for the kids. Our house will always have the good stuff (though probably not full size bars...).
I remember getting pennies for UNICEF. We would get little black and orange mini cartons, smaller than a milk cartoon from the cafeteria.They would hand them out at school and you were suppose to fill them up with pennies donated by the same people who gave you candy trick or treating. You then bring them back to school and apparently the pennies went to the UN and helped end poverty or something.
I remember Widget! Are my memories of him very vague and fuzzy? Yes. And are they comprised mostly of him being a Happy Meal toy in the early 90s? Also yes. But he’s still in there!
Mini comics like those was given out in UK in 80s and early 90s but as promos in snacks and multipack chocklate bars Trio had The Real Ghostbusters one with original storys and full colour artwork choose your own adventure mini books with them.
this year i made bags with halloween themed snap bracelets, squishies, glow in the dark temp tattoos, 4 pieces of fun sized chocolate candy, a pouch of welches gummies and a rice krispie treat.
I hand out the treats on Halloween, and man I've been handing out pretty decent goodies over the years. Doing treat bags again this year and while I need to stock up on candy and fun things I always wonder what kids would do if I bought like 20 dollar store Pokémon trading card packs and casually handed those out! I didn't trick or treat much between ages 6-12. Which sounds sad, but while I do have many positive Halloween memories... Nothing sucked worse than living in the country with no neighbors. P.S. This vid definitely brought some memories. I'm totally with you on the McDonald's certificates. My dad was notoriously cheap so... Also, I was one of the cool kids (sarcasm) that was obsessed with history, politics and geography. So naturally I bought the Desert Storm trading cards myself. I'd walk my ass up to Frank's Liquor store, on one of the busiest streets in the most dangerous area in SW Detroit, to buy those and the Mars Attacks! trading cards. I prominently displayed my Desert Storm stickers of the Saudi Arabian and U.N. flags on my wall. You know, as conversation pieces for all the girls that hung out in my room.
My dad refused to go to McDonald's because he had one bad experience. McDonald's pretty much was banned in our house. If we ever got those coupons, they never got used and thrown out.

Since the world would shame an adult for trick or treating I just thought of a great business idea. Adult trick or treating center. You pay $20 bucks to get in like an amusement park but instead its houses decked out all spooky. You dress up and go around trick or treating like its 1990 again. They'd get rich off my visits alone.
One year I took my little brother trick-or-treating, an old lady who answered the door took a piece of candy and left a mustard packet. We didn’t quite realize what happened until we got home to sort the loot, and we were crying laughing.
I remember going to a rich neighborhood when I was trick or treating back in '09 and some lady was giving out actual pillows that looked like candy bars, I left with a crunch bar

I remember one house that gave out 50 cent pieces one year...I still remember that. I think me and some friends hit that house at least two or three times that night, haha.
And it may not be crazy different, but this house by my grandma's always gave out homemade popcorn balls. And I just remember them being SO good.
As someone from the Detroit area, I would get a few snack size bags of plain Better Made potato chips. Really wish they were bbq . Also I would always end up with little hard chalky monster shaped candies that were in little individual boxes that had monsters printed on them. They would always get pitched due to the unknown company of origin.
it gives me great joy to pickup a few cases of full size candy bars from costco to hand out to the neighborhood kids. yep, i'm that awesome house with the full size bars, coolest house on the block hahaha
MAN, that was so much fun to watch! & I remember Widget!!! I loved that show! 😂🥰 & those coupons were the best!!! 😭💖 I remember one of the coolest Halloweens I ever had as a kid was when I went trick-or-treating at the mall. I think it was like '93 or '94? I got a box of jumbo Sesame Street crayons & a cassette of songs, a bag of green apple licorice & a bag "gourmet" jelly beans from a li'l candy shop, & a cassette of songs from Animaniacs. It was LIT. 🎃✨
I'll be damned. I have a thing for mini comics and have had a set of these for a while. I just called them "Marvel Presents" as nothing in them gave a clue to their origins. It's awesome to finally find out their history!
As an adult, I now Big League the shit out of my neighbors, by giving out full size candy bars.

Full size candy bars were always an excellent score! So much nostalgia in this video, but I can honestly say that I do not remember getting the comics or cards but that doesn't mean that I didn't get them. In the neighborhoods that I grew up in the change usually came from elderly people and it wasn't loose rather 5 coins (pennies mostly😒) were wrapped tightly together in saranwrap! McDonald's Gift Certificates were always a win and were a staple for my trick or treating hauls. I always liked when I would get a popcorn ball and I would say that was the weirdest thing, again that I remember, that I received.
The thing that made my trick or treating the "bees knees" where the few years in the late 80s early 90s, I am guessing, when the Mars candy mini bars (Snickers, Milky Way, 3 Musketeers) ran promotions where each wrapper had a letter and you had to spell out something and would win (no not really) a prize. I don't remember what the prizes were, but I want to say one of them was a Disney trip and you had to spell Mickey or Disney? I searched the inter webs and couldn't find anything about it but I know it was real...wasn't it?
Those McDonalds coupons were so great! Btw, this year's Cheetos cinnamon sugar bag of bones may be the greatest Halloween snack this year.
I remember getting three weird things over the years: 1) an unrecognizable plastic figurine that vaguely looked like a disembodied butt with fat legs; 2) a toothbrush; and 3) A religious comic book that said Halloween is a sin.
I always liked getting a mini box of Nerds candy. In my neighborhood people mostly gave out Tootsie Rolls, so anything other than that was exciting.
I remember my Great Aunts neighborhood was the one we’d always go through when I was a kid, one of the corner houses was a dentist, so he’d always hand out a quarter. Thanks for the memories!

Comic book stores have been selling mini comics for Halloween again for the last several years. I know because my parents normally give out full size bars (the Neighbourhood doesn’t get many kids) but a few years would give comics AND full bars.
I've always wondered: Those comics they give away for Halloween, are they actual mini-comics (like small pages), or are they regular-sized comics that just have fewer pages?

Instead of candy I personally make dozens of craft packs. I buy stickers, glitter glue, a small toy, an eraser, a pencil 2 markers and 2 crayons and include a coloring page and a glow stick. I try to make sure no two packs are alike.
I spend all night of the 30th putting them together.
Full sized candy bars were the best! I remember being so happy and stoked about it!
Honestly I find most regular candy bars to be kinda ho-hum, what I always appreciated and try to give out myself is biiig handfuls of smaller candies. More variety that way. and if supplies dwindle, you can start handing out just 2 or 3 per person.
The little mini mart down the street from my house as a kid gave out cans of soda. They'd open their vending machine for us kids. Always loved that. I'd also love the snack size bags of chips or snacks. I try to be the house that gives out good stuff. One year I did glow stick bracelets that was a hit.

I take great pleasure in my adulthood getting to choose "top shelf" candy for the kids. Our house will always have the good stuff (though probably not full size bars...).
I remember getting pennies for UNICEF. We would get little black and orange mini cartons, smaller than a milk cartoon from the cafeteria.They would hand them out at school and you were suppose to fill them up with pennies donated by the same people who gave you candy trick or treating. You then bring them back to school and apparently the pennies went to the UN and helped end poverty or something.
Oh wow, I totally forgot about Trading Card Treats. I'd have been like 4 at the time, but I distinctly remember seeing them.
I at least once got a nickel in a stapled cardboard holder, sort of a quick storage thing for coin collectors I guess.

Mini comics like those was given out in UK in 80s and early 90s but as promos in snacks and multipack chocklate bars Trio had The Real Ghostbusters one with original storys and full colour artwork choose your own adventure mini books with them.

this year i made bags with halloween themed snap bracelets, squishies, glow in the dark temp tattoos, 4 pieces of fun sized chocolate candy, a pouch of welches gummies and a rice krispie treat.
I hand out the treats on Halloween, and man I've been handing out pretty decent goodies over the years. Doing treat bags again this year and while I need to stock up on candy and fun things I always wonder what kids would do if I bought like 20 dollar store Pokémon trading card packs and casually handed those out!
I didn't trick or treat much between ages 6-12. Which sounds sad, but while I do have many positive Halloween memories... Nothing sucked worse than living in the country with no neighbors. Unlike the suburbs I live in now. lol

Also, I was one of the cool kids (sarcasm) that was obsessed with history, politics and geography. So naturally I bought the Desert Storm trading cards myself.
I'd walk my ass up to Frank's Liquor store, on one of the busiest streets in the most dangerous area in SW Detroit, to buy those and the Mars Attacks! trading cards. I prominently displayed my Desert Storm stickers of the Saudi Arabian and U.N. flags on my wall. You know, as conversation pieces for all the girls that hung out in my room.
My dad refused to go to McDonald's because he had one bad experience. McDonald's pretty much was banned in our house. If we ever got those coupons, they never got used and thrown out.

Since the world would shame an adult for trick or treating I just thought of a great business idea. Adult trick or treating center. You pay $20 bucks to get in like an amusement park but instead its houses decked out all spooky. You dress up and go around trick or treating like its 1990 again. They'd get rich off my visits alone.

One year I took my little brother trick-or-treating, an old lady who answered the door took a piece of candy and left a mustard packet. We didn’t quite realize what happened until we got home to sort the loot, and we were crying laughing.
I remember going to a rich neighborhood when I was trick or treating back in '09 and some lady was giving out actual pillows that looked like candy bars, I left with a crunch bar
