  • Hello Friends!
Over the last 2 weeks, I have been working on the American Duchess 19010's Wrap Cape pattern. It was a lot of firsts for me, as I learned to make a pattern from a grid, learned how to work without seam allowance, and how to enlarge this pattern to fit me! It turned out great in the end, after a lot of mock-ups and learning and I am super happy with how it came out!
    I hope you enjoy!

There is an old couture trick that may help with the gaping. It works well on wool and wool type fabrics. Unpick the area you want to bring in, plus a couple of inches each side. Run a gathering stitch just inside the seam line and very gently and evenly gather the fabric down to the shape you need, fasten the ends. Then you steam the gathers into the fabric until they disappear. Then you redo the seam (probably by hand at this point as you have made the garment). It is magic when you see it work. As another floof sized woman I know that one size fits all is BS and you have done a superb job.

a teeny bit of extra width to the shoulders could improve the fit too, that's what I've noticed from most of these capes that I've seen

I thought of that too... But I also wonder if shifting the grain of that piece to make the wrap on the bias would be a way to improve the fit? Looking at this hot mess is why I usually prefer to drape than draft. I'm too lazy to actually keep making it until it works =D

When I make a pattern from a grid, I like to set a point as (0,0) and then mark the (x,y) coordinates of the points of the pattern. It makes it easier for me to think about where everything is and to transfer it without making mistakes because I'm thinking about placement in relation to a single reference point rather than placement of every point in relation to every other points. It also means I can mark all the number bits down before I start and I don't have to to any calculating in the moment.

I am also a "woman of fluff" and just made a mock-up of this cape. I added darts to the wraps to help with the extra fabric over the top edge of the bust. I also cut all the way down the center back and added a 3-inch panel so that the shoulders would be "wider". It really helped with how the whole cape fits over the shoulders and the front. For anyone else trying to work out fit issues, I highly recommend adding width to the back first before changing anything alse on the pattern, it makes the whole cape fit very differently!

Nothing is “one size fits all”!!! (Also Said by spoonies who “look small” but Also do not fit in “one size fits all” - or even “regular “petite sizes” due to muscle wasting from disabilities, autoimmune disorders, constant GI issues, etc.). Ugh! I guess this is why we draft patterns and appreciate Noelle for sharing the real process - including the struggles!

Hey those boxes are for Litter boxes! I did that when we moved into a new house and my husband wanted to not have a litter box in the house. He wanted to get rid of my daughters cat! So my way around it was to cut a hole in the wall between the living room and the furnace room which was accessed by going in from the outside! I trimmed it with wood trim. So when my husband came home boy was he mad ! But the litter box was technically not in the house! I out foxed him and he knew it!😂 Never underestimate a Woman!!

Yes, love the aesthetic. Love the history. Remember what we learned so we can build onto it, not go back to it. Women's suffrage, great (because that's what I'm using this project for) now let's get equal pay for ALL women, equal representation. What else do we need? Why did it take so long for all the various POC to have the right to vote? What next there? What else do they need? Vintage is amazing, but not everything was amazing back then whichever then you're looking at.

When someone says, "We need to protect this park that is under threat", you don't respond, "Actually we need to protect ALL parks, I guess you don't care about ALL parks". That's ignoring the issue at hand. You'd understand how rude it would be to shut down someone else's concerns in favor of just what makes you comfortable.
Black lives matter. It can't be said enough.

23:02 - cats, right? I have a special needs cat who came back from getting her teeth cleaned/removed/blood work done. She has a blanket of her own on my bed, a buckwheat pillow of her own wrapped in multiple layers of soft terry cloth (she drools so it's also easy to clean all that stuff plus it's not so crunchy.) Where is she? Sleeping on a crumpled paper bag on the floor in front of the window. Sometimes I think I do for her to make myself feel better, not so much to make her comfortable. Obviously she knows what she wants :)

I am sooo with you on the Black Lives Matter issue. My response to those who say "All Lives Matter" is that if all lives mattered equally, there would be no need to protest. Of course, all lives do matter, but black lives are in distress and under extreme duress right now, so we absolutely must attend to them right now and in a way that they find worthwhile. It's not a zero-sum game -- we must be in this together.
Congrats on the cool cape-wrap! Looks good. Hope you find a solution to the gap/gape situation, though I have no helpful advice. On another front, I finally finished the Star Wars quilt (including the hand-embroidered motifs -- First Order, Rebel symbols, etc. -- on the corner squares)! Now, I'll be starting on coordinating pillow shams, which -- like you -- I estimate will not take very long. :-D Please keep us posted on the podcast. Sounds fun!

The thing I heard which helped my Mum who was feeling really guilty because she thought saying all lives matter was a good thing and felt "told off" for saying it was to think of it like this: someone says that they've broken their arm and that it hurts. If you respond with "all broken bones hurt" whilst its technically true, it would be incredibly insensitive and wouldn't do anything to address the very real pain the person is feeling. Hearing that for her was a massive realisation. So now she happily says black lives matter, not all live matter.

As one of your "older" viewers may I speak up about BLM movement and your statements. I live in a Very White state (and blue) but the issue still exists here. When you don't see the "older generation" out marching in protests I would like for you to not judge immediately. Some might think the Pandemic might keep older folks away because of the fear of becoming infected. That is a legitimate excuse. But also consider this. The baby boomer generation tried fighting this battle in the 60's. We were somewhat successful. But many of us were told over and over. . . Shhh. . . .don't cause a ruckus, Don't make people call you a trouble maker. Yes. . .it is those kind of sentiments that can also give the impression that our silence means that we don't agree with the protests. WE do agree. we also know we are out of energy. It is up to the next generation to carry the battle to the next step. I will use my energy to VOTE. I will use my energy educate my grandchildren to be color blind. I will willingly be the sounding board for those that come back from protests/marches. Just because I'm not in the street with you does not mean I feel your cause is worthless.

Everyone does what they can. That is all that matters. I am in Canada and looking at our own record of police brutality against non-white folk and it is appalling. Police would regularly leave Native folk in the countryside in the dead of winter without winter clothing to make their way home ... or not. When too many froze to death people started to notice. I feel helpless so often but we can speak out on platforms like this. I also found places to donate money.

Whenever I get to the cape, I'll keep your shoulder adjustments in mind, because I'm quite broad-shouldered. I have to say, I'm jealous your sewing area has a door, because I don't and my cats are constantly in and on my stuff.
Random thing I've noticed: Muslin in Europe is not the same as Muslin in the US. I keep wondering why everyone is using a super thin/sheer fabric for the mock-ups. Finally figured out, it's what we would call Calico. Mind-blown.

If you’re interested, have a look at what groups like Warriors for Aboriginal Resistance are doing. Our Indigenous people have the highest incarceration rates in the world! So there are huge problems in this country too.
Aboriginal people make up 20-25% of those killed by police in Australia, even though they’re only 3% of the population. That’s so disproportionate it’s ridiculous. So there are groups here in Australia that are working to improve things in our society, and I definitely recommend checking them out.

Re the needles....Bernadette would be so happy to see those really short needles! You worked so hard on that cape and it really paid off! You were very brave to make your heartfelt statement about BLM. Yes all lives matter, but that will not be achieved until all lives matter. That is not happening now. When it does, then and only then will all lives matter. I have been involved with the civil rights movement since 1967. I've marched all over the country trying to get people (white) people to understand that color is important. It means diversity, it means the Statue of Liberty calling out to all people to come here for safety and we need to respond accordingly. Treating all people humanely is what our country is supposed to stand for. It is what the Constitution and Declaration of Independence require. It is every persons right to be treated respectfully, educated well, have sufficient access to healthcare and equal opportunity in jobs and housing. By virtue of their birth, all people are entitled to these guarantees. Every person has a reasonable expectation that they will be served and protected by police. Thank God for phones with cameras. It pains me to say that not all that much has changed since the movement began..that is until phones began to have cameras. Those phones are saving lives, even while filming a slow murder. Police violating people's rights and committing crimes need to be weeded out and that will happen if people keep filming. Laws need to be changed to eliminate the 'implied immunity' police officers have right now. Social workers need to be hired by police departments to handle many of the family needs that the police are not qualified to handle and because of that, needless arrests and violence tends to occur. The mentally ill need to be provided treatment, not incarcerated because they are mentally ill. Cash bonds have to be eliminated in non-violent offenses. Many suspects are waiting in jail for a trial longer than the most severe penalty a court could give them. There is so much to be done. I am so happy to see the country FINALLY waking up. I was wondering what it would take to get people out into the streets to say enough is enough. This is not who we want to be. I write letters, sign petitions, give to activist organizations that actually do something instead of talking about doing something. This is a defining moment in our history. Who are we as Americans. How do we want the world to see America. There is no red or blue here. We are 350 million strong and this is the moment to support all people in America. Remember it's "WE THE PEOPLE..." Thank you so much Nicolle

Capes turned out fine and the gap is definitely a good snack holder. Hope kitty feels good for a long time to come. At least she has you to take care of her. I've actually become optimistic that things might actually change now with the amount of people protesting and the variety of people at the protests. Young, old, and all the colors we come in. It's a beautiful thing.

Very cute....I am currently in Maine at the eastern edge on the water looking at Canada. I come from San Francisco through a circuitous route that began when I became a refugee...but I am sorta settled here for now.....I need to make a pattern and have paper and fabric for a year now but have not made it....it is rather a simple thing but ....

I love that pattern and may need to make myself one. I wonder if you made the panels that cross in the front wider (so there was more breast coverage) if that would help the issue? I have a long torso and pretty big boobs so I know I would have to adjust that.
And after looking at ALL of the ones on Instagram, I also decided that mine needs a hood and then I need to go frolicking in the woods.

Hello Noelle. What a smart idea - mostly made mitts to size yourself. I adore the needle packaging. The kitten private rooms are so cool. I remember weird candies coming in odd little cardboard boxes. They always seemed a little sketchy. With the white mock-up and the headphones you definitely had a Princess Leia vibe going on. Oh that plaid wool. So pretty. The book podcast sounds great! Sharp scissors make things so much less frustrating. The cape turned out beautifully. A perfect colour for you. Take care.

I inherited my mother's pinking shears, and they have not been useable for years, they are old, '40's/50's then I heard of a tip (here in the uk) it is possible to sharpen blunt scissors by cutting into aluminium foil, the ordinary kitchen sort. mum's pinking shears are now in use. I would not have believed it possible. Thanks for your vlogs, loving them, and having only recently found you am looking at some of your older videos, and really enjoying them.

Maggie may here. Newish to history boundingish. I guess newish because it's not a totally new idea, just got more actively interested in more of my wardrobe fitting the idea within the last few years, and unfortunately my total lack of time has kept that from reaching any level of fruition. I'm so glad to have "met" you and so many new names and faces through cocovid. Thank you for sharing your learning process on this as I have a feeling I'll have to follow a similar process starting with adjusting the back to get the shoulders right, and I don't have a clue what I'm doing I'm just jumping in and hoping for the best 😇.

1st, Thank you for using your platform and taking a stand on BLM! I am so glad to see so many allies coming out in support! I already knew just from watching your other videos that we have the same values about the stuff that is the most important.
    2nd, I need a silhouette!!
3rd, your fear with the cape pattern and having to print it is so relatable. Watching you use that fear and doing it anyway was so inspiring. Sometimes I let my fear get in my way and I will put off something for far too long. I have started trying to tackle that with a "JUST START" attitude. Sometimes it means it takes me days to do something that most would be able to do in one day, but doing it in smaller, more manageable bites works for me until I am comfy enough with a new skill. Plus I know one day, I will be able to do the thing in one day, but I am not there yet with a lot of skills. I think this whole mindset of yours is why you are my fave CosTuber. Your Vlog is just the most relatable thing ever!
4th, yes please do a historical shopping video!
5th, I want to be a cat lady at your level. You created holes in your walls just for your cats! That is cat house goals!

First of all - thank you for the little speech (all so very well said, you have it sorted out, I'd happily share that with people who need to understand better) and for all your activity at Instagram regarding the events in the US and around the world. I had quite a tough time and I only followed what you and others were sharing, but it gave me a lot! A lot to think about, a lot of information and also a lot of positive stuff. So thanks!
Aaalso, I finally caught up with your vlogs, yay! In the last one I think you mentionned travelling, or the lack of it now and in the near future. Let me tell you, it has been on my mind a lot as I promised to show you around Prague once you get to the Czech republic. And I'm sooo looking forward to it even though I have no idea how I'll do it with our baby around (my husband said if the beb is big enough by the time you come, he can take him and carry him around in one of those carriers or something like that...). I hope I won't scare you - I even had a dream or two where you figured staying at an accomodation here in Prague or even with us at home. Now with the quarantine/lockdown/epidemic and all other events I guess it will take quite some time before we can welcome you here, but I wanted you to know the offer of a guided tour by a local still holds and I'll be extremely happy to see you once it's possible.
And finally - the cape looks awesome! I am amazed by the amount of work that went into all the mockups and alterations. Wow! Well done! (The colours are yummmm too!)

What a beautiful Cape! I love that it is reversible and the fabrics you chose!
I saw that you pinned all the seams to press them neat. Its much easier to get clean edges when you press all seams open first (you mentioned you had a opening to turn the piece so on most edges it should be possible to do that) then turning the whole thing and press again.
And thanks that you showed all the "problems" you had with that pattern. Now I wont despair when those occure on my mock-up(s) and know how to fix it :D
