I live in Portland. Until last year we had an ice cream place called Little Chickpea, which made ice cream out of chickpeas and it is probably the best vegan ice cream I've ever had. I've been vegan for 17 years and I've had a lot of vegan ice cream. Unfortunately they closed. :(
OMG that is so cool!! (Not that they closed... that's so unfortunate 😥) But so intriguing they were using chickpeas. Now I'm even more determined to figure out a good recipe from beans. 😆😆 I actually found a few chickpea ones after researching, so I'm keen to try those as well. Thank you for sharing this!
I appreciate all your commentary about the thought process that goes into this, instead of just presenting the final version as a linear progression of ingredients & tasks.
Wooow this is so creative! I like these healthy versions of snacks and desserts, even if they don’t taste exactly the same as the regular version, they do have their own tasty uniqueness to them ☺️ Thank you for these fun recipes ☺️🌱
I just discovered your channel 💞💞💞. I love your creative, fun loving spirit. It’s - 11 here in my part of Canada 🇨🇦 today , but it never too cold for ice cream…. 🤣
Ooh I love that idea! Good mix of fiber & fat. 😋😋 I’ll give it a go this summer! Just posted a new ice cream today too. 🤩 ruclips.net/video/W1w6C9fJ7A0/видео.html
That's so interesting, it looks like a good way to get some beans. I wonder what would happen if you combined some of your other icecreams with the bean ones? You have such great ideas.
I was definitely thinking the same thing!! Great idea. 😄 Perhaps it would work to combo it with the sweet potato…. it’s been one of the best bases I’ve found so far. And thank you so much for the kind words! ☺️
Yes! Great question! I only tried a small amount while I was testing it for flavor .. but I did notice the grittiness. I figured it was slightly too much beans, but I didn’t want to start adding a bunch of liquid to “balance” it as then I would have had wayyyy too much ice cream. 😂😂 But I do think reducing the bean amount and/or perhaps cooking them just a tad longer will help!
If you would leave out the Coconut Milk How, would you also leave out the nuts? If I use the Cashews, how much Cashew to this recipe would you recmommend please? I have no agar agar but I have another type of vegan gel so will try that. Also, do I end yo soak the nuts? Any help from your subscribers Ali welcomed! First time trying
Hi Christine! Good questions. I realllly need to remake this video with a proper/ improved recipe! 😂🙈 Honestly I'm not sure about adding cashews instead as it would take some trial and error, BUT I do know there are quite a few cashew-based ice cream recipes online. I've used one or two and they're great! I would start with those. 😊 I love Sam's recipes: itdoesnttastelikechicken.com/vegan-vanilla-ice-cream-cashew-base/
@@LetsEatPlants I'll be sure to check out your follow-up! Hope it will be relatively free from funny ingredients like that green plant you added during cooking (forgot the name) .. it's not something I've seen in stores here... Good job on experimenting though ...love it! 😍
No worries! I left an article with some tips in the description box of this video. You can check it out here: handletheheat.com/how-to-make-ice-cream-without-a-machine/ 😁 There will be some slight differences without the ice cream maker, but definitely do-able! Enjoy!
Yes! Great idea! I had originally thought chickpeas would work well (because they can be made into desserts pretty easily)… but I think you’re right white beans would be even milder! Will have to give it a go. 😁 Thank you!
I haven't yet! It's been a busy summer and I haven't made nearly enough ice cream yet. 😂😂 I'm confident it will work with canned beans, but the recipe will need to be tweaked. If you're an adventurous cook, I recommend trying it out and adjusting as you go. Essentially you want a pudding-like consistency before adding it to the ice cream maker, so just keep that in mind and add sweeteners to taste. 🤗
You are such a cutie! I just love your channel. Hey, you need to move to the left or right when you record - ha ha, only because that grease vent thing makes you look like you are wearing a hat. No Lie. And I'm not commenting to be mean or critical. It's kinda funny and cute, but I know you aren't going for that look. Love you.
😂😂😂 Omg you are so right!!! Angle was definitely off on this one. Thank you for pointing it out! No offense taken, it gave me a giggle. 😜🤗💕 And thank you for your sweet comment!
But why? It's not healthy with all the sugar. Sugar is one of the worst things you can eat so to make something out of beans and load it with sugar to hide the taste of the beans well, yeah I don't know, not for me.
Oh! Sure! The _why_ is to make something that is healthier than store-bought ice cream... but still tastes like store-bought ice cream. 😄 Also, even homemade vegan ice creams use a lot of fat as the base (usually cashews or coconut cream) so I also wanted to see if there was another alternative for a base, that would still be creamy. Since I use a lot of beans to replace nuts in my salad dressings, I thought it could potentially make a nice substitute in ice cream as well. Basically, it's all about experimentation, which I love to do with food. As far as the sugar goes... as I mentioned in the video there are definitely substitutes that you could use, but if you don't eat any sugar other than fruit then you're right, this probably isn't the best recipe for you. 😊
@@lakedog7313 I've also recently found this one that uses dates! I might give it a try soon and see how it is. 🤗 healthygirlkitchen.com/recipes/chickpea-peanut-butter-ice-cream-vegangluten-free/
Sugar is sugar. Your ice cream defeats any health benefits. It's a "no" from me. I have made *Cannellini Bean Nice Cream* using coconut cream, an overripe avocado & a small ripe banana which was good, but I am always ready to ditch the banana for less sugar in the final product. At least, after watching your video.. your recipe has a lot more sugar in it than a small banana. So, still learning. I have also had success with Chickpeas as well. Keep on trying. Good Luck. 👍🏾

Portland Maine or Portland Oregon? Im from Maine.

I love how brave you are in the kitchen! Why not?! ❤ it!
Hahaha thank you! I fully intend to make an update to this video with some more bean ideas when I get a chance! I do love experimenting. 😋😋
Love your fearless creativity! Beans into ice cream - super impressed😄
Hahaha thank you!! 🤩 After this vid I started looking around the pantry like, “what else can I turn into ice cream?” 🤣

Aww, thank you Christina! 🤗🤗 It was -8 today here too, but I still had some of the ice cream for my afternoon snack. 😜 What part of Canada are you in?
Ice-cream made from beans sounds 😋 Maddie and another fantastic recipe & video. Love 🥰 the video and love 💞❤ Maddie & Q.

I'm curious if you noticed the grittiness when it was at the pudding stage too, or if the freezing made it more pronounced? Can't wait to try this!

Great question
Hello Nancy
Nice to find another way to use split mung beans !😮
Agree! I have a lot to use up. 😜😜
Wonder about red lentils. They blend really smooth.
Yes! Excellent idea! I'm pretty sure red lentils would work well. I'll have to start playing around with them. Thank you for the suggestion! 🤗
Baby Lima or butter beans also are very creamy.

Cool ❤
Thanks! Definitely need to tweak this recipe this year!
Pls try again without coconut cream.
Hahaha working on it! Just curious, is it the flavor you don’t like or the fat content?

You added a whole can of coconut cream, so how is that healthy! Coconut milk has less fat.
You can use coconut milk if you prefer!
