    Good afternoon GTR. I just wanted to say thank you. After seeing this video, I checked our Pcie 16x with the Rx7900xtx oc. And it showed x8. I was so confused. This is the z790 Godlike m/b. But I remember when I bought the 2 Crucial T705's. One 2tb and the other 4tb. I placed them in slot M.2_4 and M.2_5. The manual saved in fine print that if I used M.2_4 It will lane share and reduce 16x to 8x. So I moved slot 4 to slot 1 closest to the cpu which it should have anyway because of booting. I originally did this because it said slot 4 Gen5. But thanks again it resolved the situation and verified with Cpuid. This Channel is awesome. Can't wait until Paint time. Lol.

    To get PCIEx16_1 to run at the full x16 speed you can only install and NVME drive in the top slot. If you add a NVME drive to ether M.2_2 or M.2_3 it will take lanes away from the PCIEx16_1 slot.
    You can however install NVME drives into slots M.2_4 and M.2_5 that run off a chipset and will not steal lans from the PCIEx16_1 slot

    Even if it does reduce the GPU slot to x8, it is PCi-e gen5 right, if you install a rtx 5080 or 5090 in it ?
    So, a Pci-e gen 5 GPU in x8 mode, should be as fast as a PCi-e Gen4 GPU in x16 mode.... or am i wrong ?
    If i am right, i do not think x8 will do much damage.
    PCI-E 5 is twice the bandwidth of PCI-E 4. A PCI-E 5.0 slot running at x8 will still be 16 GT/s, provided you use a PCI-E Gen 5 GPU.
    Do you think a rtx 4090 is limited by PCI-E 4.0 ?
    I currently run 5 NVME M.2 drives on my z690 mb, and i am still seeing "x16" in GPU-Z "bus interface". One of the disks is on a PCI-e card.
    I also have a Hyper Asus 4 slot card in my shed in case i want to run 8 NVME M.2 drives :-) But i think adding that card will take some lanes. :-(

And with the intent of using a single NVMe SSD; how might connecting my P5800x u.2 Optane-> SlimSAS port, compare to a m.2 redriver to gen-z EDSFF 1c -> u.2(connected to m.2_1)? I’m currently running the latter but feel as though the 9800x3d SHOULD (and CAN) be able to push far more IOPS than I am actually getting. Might I expect many more IOPS with the foremost solution? With regards to lane/bandwith occupancy. -this is independent of the suspected decrease in latency, because of SlimSAS being specifically optimized for latency.

      Yeah I have compared the motherboard manual for this x870e hero and the model below the Gaming wifi -e. It clearly says on the Wifi board that using both m.2 2 and 3 will drop the first x16 slot to 8x, but on the hero it clearly says it will just disable the second x16 slot. Also this motherboard has two gen 5 x16 slots not one gen 5 x16 slot and a gen 4 like the wifi.
      I appreciate this video and it's useful to know if I want to add a 6th m.2 drive, but his information is wrong I think.

      @@Stanl3h Fortunately for you, I actually already have this board (got it the day it came out) and have a 9800X3D as well (got that the day it came out as well). I currently have all 5 m.2 slots populated, for a total of 20TB of NVMe SSD storage. And am using an RTX 3080Ti right now running on PCI-E 4.0 x 8 bandwidth. If there is any real performance impact from it, it's not more than 1-2%. The performance gains I've gotten from switching to a 9800X3D and the AM5 platform have still been far higher than any potential losses due the lower X8 bandwidth for the GPU. I'd consider it to be negligible.
      That being said, this is also only a temporary situation. I fully intend on putting a 5090 in there as soon as I can. Which I expect to support PCI-E 5.0, and assuming it does, then worst case I will still be going from running my 3080Ti with PCI-E 4.0 x 8 to running a 5090 with PCI-E 5.0 x 8.
      And since PCI-E 5.0 is double the bandwidth of PCI-E 4.0, then PCI-E 5.0 x 8 should provide bandwidth equivalent to PCI-E 4.0 x 16. And I would be very surprised if the 5090 experiences any sort of bottleneck in performance when running on a computer with PCI-E 4.0 x 16.
      So considering that, I think I should be able to keep all the M.2 slots populated and run the 5090 in PCI-E 5.0 x 8 mode without being bottlenecked or having any performance loss due to it not using PCI-E 5.0 X 16.

    Are your 4 NVMe's all running at 5.0? Doesn't the 870E hero motherboard support up to 5 NVMes itself up from 4 on the X670E, so an extra 5.0 one and I guess this sas would make it 6 NVMes technically? I personally don't currently see much benefit of most gen 5 NVMe's besides your boot drive. As for a storage drive the heat is too high, cost too much and not a large enough difference to justify 2x the price vs say a Samsung 4TB 990 Pro which is 4.0 and 7GB/s

    • @Riyo94
      @Riyo94 2 месяца назад +2

      That is simply not possible, the AM5 x870e chipset platform is 44/24 (44 total pcie lanes 24 of which are gen5) 16 for the GPU, 4 for the USB 4.0 (mandatory for all x870e boards) that leaves only 4 for 1 nvme gen5 ssd for a total of 24.
      If a motherboard adds anymore gen5 ssds it would take lanes from the 16 GPU lanes. Taking lanes from a GPU doesn't work like taking 4 out of 16 and leaving 12 for it. The GPU either runs at 16 or 8.
      Now the x870e crosshair hero provides 5 nvmes slots (3 Gen5 and 2 Gen4). You can use the top Gen5 and the 2 Gen4 nvmes without lane sharing, but if you want to use the other 2 gen5 nvmes (1 or both of them it doesn't matter) they will take lanes from the 16 gpu.
      The slimSAS method shown in the video adds 1 more Gen4 ssd for a total of 4 nvme ssds (1 Gen5, 3 Gen4) without GPU lane sharing.

    To avoid PCIe GPU lane sharing on the ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Hero motherboard, it is crucial to understand the allocation of PCIe lanes. The Ryzen 9000 Series CPUs have 24 PCIe 5.0 lanes, with 16 typically allocated to the GPU. Using multiple M.2 slots connected directly to the CPU can impact this allocation. For instance, using more than two M.2 slots at x4 speed each can reduce the available lanes for the GPU, potentially dropping it from x16 to x8.
    To maintain a full x16 configuration for the GPU, limit the use of M.2 slots directly connected to the CPU to two slots at most. The X870E Hero has five M.2 slots, but only using the first two PCIe 5.0 x4 slots ensures that the GPU retains its full x16 bandwidth. Avoid using expansion cards that add additional M.2 slots, as these can also reduce the GPU's PCIe lanes. By carefully managing the M.2 slot usage, you can ensure that your GPU operates at its full potential without lane sharing.

      @RKBenchmarker 3 месяца назад +3

      Actually, the manual shows that if either M.2_2 or _3 is used, then the gpu will run at x8. Keep in mind that WE do not have 24 gen 5 lanes available to use; WE only have 16, so if we use just an x4 M.2 that share lanes, it will drop the pcie_1 to x8.

You will not find a PCIE_2 with 16 lanes (talking about pcie lanes, not physical slot size) with a switch. And I own or have owned most of those boards from both Asus and MSI. Also, the manuals are clear as to what they offer and where to put the gpu as well. Perhaps when you saw pcie_2 x16 you thought it was lanes, but that was referring to the slot size. For example, the Asus Extreme manual says: "2x PCIe 5.0 x16 slots (supports x16 or x8/x8 modes)." So, it even specifies "slot" size and then lanes available per pcie slot. You never see a listing for 0/x16, but instead, x16/0 or x8/x8. And, other brands that actually have a block diagram show this visually. Hope that is helpful for someone.

      The components are great on both boards. The TaiChi unfortunately only uses the 160MHz Wifi7 version, cutting in half the actual speed... while the Hero uses the 320MHz version. There are many other factors as well, but I'm curious
      what you have noticed about the TaiChi that is better than the Hero? Thanks

    • @RKBenchmarker
      @RKBenchmarker 3 месяца назад +4

      @@79cachepomdua In most cases lane sharing is not a problem, it gives choices. For example, a mobo that offers 3 M.2s with no lane sharing compared to a board that offers 4 M.2s but if you use the 4th one, it shares lanes with something. You can still run 3 M.2s just like the other board that only has 3, but you have options. ----- Answering your question, the Nova's M.2_5 shares lanes with PCIE_3... so one or the other is disabled. But in this case, they provide 4 M.2s with no lane sharing at the cost of the bottom 2 PCIE slots being x1 and x2. So, if I needed to run a 4k/60 capture card on the Nova, I would not be able to as it needs 4 lanes (PCIE x4). ---- The TiaChi's 2nd PCIE_2 shares lanes with PCIE_1. So, if you populate the pcie_2 (x8), it will cut in half your gpu lanes to x8. This is not a big drop in performance though (no where near half, just a few fps). And, if you use an upcoming 50-series gpu, cutting it down to x8 will have no effect as we cannot saturate it at this point in time.

      I get a 2TB M.2 SSD for 99 Euros after Tax that does up to 7000Mb/s of reading and 6000Mb/s writing. Or a cheaper Kingston M.2 with 1TB for 54 Euros after Tax that does 3500Mb/s. In games this will not be utilized. But what are we talking about? That is not meant mean, but more interested, what you mean.
      You can't just break open SD-Cards and solder them in line. M.2 SSDs are so damn cheap at the moment.
      Also, consider cooling. New and fast M.2s get really hot and sometimes need passive Heatspreaders.
